View Full Version : Exp Progression a Bit Slower Than Usual?

Is the EXP speed from 1-5 as intended? It seems a bit slower than normal.
I remember leveling from 1-2 rather quickly in original EQ and then getting up to level 5 in less than 2 hours.
If it's as intended, have at it. I was just curious. Lots of deaths in the noob area in Akanon. I mean a LOT. I think some don't know they can loot their corpses and get their stuff back.

Nah, it took like 8+ hours to do it back in the past.

Part of the reason you see so many gnome corpses is people get the idea that mages are very powerful. So off to whatever city they desire (Ak Anon in this case) and make a shiny new mage. Lo and behold, mages don't get a pet until level 4. Level 1 is pretty easy, just kill even con's.
Level 2/3 with no pet takes forever. There's coyotes that'll kill you fast. Wandering skeleton (the level 6 one, not the level 1 decaying ones) plus that dam troll make life pretty crappy. Chances of getting a kobold camp group is very low until level 4; they're yellow and red con's so you're not landing a nuke on them anyway.
So after 5 hours of playing you've finally managed to ding level 3, looted every corpse up to now. Just as you're about to finish off a kobold runt that dam skeleton wanders by killing you.
OH FFS! Gnome mages suck! Leave the corpse, delete the toon and go make a DE necro! They rock.

1-5 is brutal unless you have an alt to buy exp turn ins.

In classic EQ there was a newbie ZEM from levels 1-6 no matter your zone. You got 100 zem instead of the standard 75 or whatever.
I only just rediscovered this so it doesn't exist yet on p99 but it should.

Back in the day were newbie mobs respawning in 2 minutes or did they have the same respawn as regular outdoor zones (6~min)?

Mobs were linked in groups of 3's that would repop all three at once when they all died. P99 can't replicate that (yet) so Brogean made them spawn faster.
At level 1, kill even cons
At level 2, kill fire beetles and decaying skeletons only
At level 3, focus on fire beetles or other level 2's
At level 4, focus on any potential level 3-4 mobs like large bats, and fill it in with fire beetles.
Don't stick to only level 1's at level 2-4 thats where people don't think of the experience formula per level they are too focused on the con color

It's a good post. If you've got a pet it really helps even if they're stealing half the XP.

I found if you can struggle to level 4 and then find a good long term kobold group, you can make it to 7 or 8 pretty quick. It's getting much better.

And this is what I believe is the core of the spirit of EQ, despite everything else, enjoying what you are doing in there! :D
Love seeing people enjoying their chars, alts, toons, whatever you name them!

Devs probably intended to give them pets at 1. Staff here should fix. Why do all these classic mechanic people want a broken class? I'm not having fun with my mage. I should have pets to reclaim at 1. I'm quitting and charging back my donations! Hope all you terrible people rot in hell for wanting mages to be miserable!

It's because many of the utility spells can be used by more than one caster class. And if it was such a spell, it was easier back in the day just to put the spell in the game at the lowest level it could be used by one of the classes than to create multiple different iterations of the spell.
Reclaim Energy can also be used by Necromancers and Enchanters, who both get pets at level 1. Hence why it is a level 1 spell. It's not a Mage-only spell.

Exp progress has been as brutal as I remember in 1999, EXCEPT the death penalty is different. I distinctly remember there not being a death penalty until lvl 7 when I rolled my first Barb back in the day. These days I have donged and lost levels several times sub lvl 5.

Need evidence for this, because I will assert that "no, you haven't".
I thought I remembered XP loss at 6 on live (corroborated here: https://almarsguides.com/eq/general/death.cfm) where it's allegedly 5 here according to /ooc replies which are of dubious value, but I dinged 4 the other day on my chanter, got 1 more kill, banked all my stuff in Kaladim and bonked the banker to die/port back to GFay so unbank my stuff, and turn in bone chips in Felwithe. No xp loss at a level 4 + 1 kill.

I make no claim as to what is classic or not, but I dropped from level 5 back to 4 when I died just after dinging on my enchanter the other day. I got the level back very quickly, but the de-level happened.

That goes with what others are saying in game. But not losing XP *at* "sub level 5".

Yes, you are right and I tested it last night. My dongs were from 5 to 4.
Perhaps I am just remembering my 1st de-level being from 7 to 6. It wouldn't matter so much if I didn't both suck and choose to roll a Troll SK.

LOL this made me laugh I will admit. I've seen it happen to newbie magicians. They curse the day they don't have a pet.
Jokes aside if a person is really enjoying their Magician they should stick with it. It's a fun class and does get better as you improve with pets. Sure they don't have the same bag of tricks as Necro but they do have great nukes. They also have some pretty powerful pets compared to necro.
I've always been torn between the Magician and Necromancer. So I just play both LOL. They are both fun in their own way. But I wouldn't give Magician a pass... it's a great class.

This can't be stressed enough -- you absolutely need to kill "HIGH LEVEL BLUE CONS" or even White cons as long as you possibly can. Think about this. A level 1 mob gives 75 XP without any ZEM Bonus. Level 1 takes 1000 XP to complete. that is 10 mobs. If you kill the same level 1 mobs when you are level 2 (7000 XP to complete) it's gonna take you 93 kills. Where as Killing level 2 whites will take you 23 mobs. It's all numbers.
Bottom line -- kill high level blues. That means mobs that are white cons to you when they are too hard at like level 4, make sure you target these mobs at level 5, high blues will be substantially better than even a mob that is 1 level lower. If you're a caster class, sometimes you can even get away with white/yellow cons depending on class and pets and stuff.
