I am trying to level up my smithing, but I am running into a problem and not sure of the cause and hoping someone could tell me what I am doing wrong. Got my skill to 24 atm sharpening rusty weapons, trying to move onto sheet metal, or reverting my rusty/tarnished weapons into ore. I have been reading on EQ traders on what to do, but it isn't working when I put this stuff into a forge, for sheet metal 2 small bricks or ore(unstacked) and one water flask, but I get the message that these items can't be combined in this container type. Same thing with trying to make the metal bits, and using the small pieces of ore. Am I missing something, do I need a smithing hammer or something else in order for it to work, or should it be working as I am reading it on EQtraders? Any advice from those that have leveled smithing would be greatly appreciated.

As a side note, the recipes say water flask, however some of the guides I have read say flask of water, are these the same things I hope, cause if not I surely can't find any listing of them anywhere from merchants lol

On a side note, is STR the main attribute that is looked at for skill ups when doing smithing like on live (not sure if it was originally like this or not). I've heard different things (like that it is Int for some classes).

So I thought I'd ask that here as it seemed like a good place, thanks :) .

It's Water Flask. You probably need a hammer (which is not consumed).

int or str whichever is higher (for smithing)

well tried it with a forging hammer and still didn't work, get same message 'can't be combined in this container type', hope I don't need a smithing hammer instead, that costs 10 plat and for a lowbie like me that isn't happening for awhile lol, not to mention that I don't want to buy the smithing one and still not be able to do it, would just be a waste of money for a low level.

the recipe is 2 small brick of ore and a water flask

no hammer needed

save these for later when you make them as you'll need them to make banded

p.s. make sure you're using the correct ore type. the small bricks needed to make sheet metal are heavy and can't be stacked

If a hammer is needed then it would in fact require a Smithing Hammer.

1) Make sure it's a forge using the 'experimental' window with nothing else sitting in it (could be hidden)
2) 2 small pieces of regular ore and 1 flask of water, nothing else, should yield 2 metal bits. No need for a hammer for those or for the sheet metal (the hammer is for folded sheet metal).
3) ???
4) If still failing, submit bug report in the forum. I've been able to do this before, so either it's a recent thing or you're going wrong somewhere.

Which city are you in and what forge are you using? Some cities have cultural forges in them, so that could be where you're having your problem. You want to make sure you're using the plain "Forge."

Well I am doing it with my troll SK, so I am using the forge right by the entrance to the SK trainer tunnel (where the NPC who sells the regents for blacksmithing as well). Like I said, I have tried a couple of those recipes, and same result for some reason, not trying it in a culteral forge(I did that once early on in the ogre city before I found their other forge lol) so I know its not that. Is their any body else having a problem with that particular forge? If so I will report it to the bug forums, it really feels like a bug, but I have never really messed with blacksmithing too much(did it on live for a bit with my old SK, but that was it) so I wanted to be sure I didn't need a smithing hammer and it was just not listed on EQtraders for some reason, but looks like I am doing everything right.

Oh and yes, I automatically use the experiment window in anything I craft, force of habbit, and I never liked the live EQ craft skills window that popped up anyway to search for recipes, just didn't like it for some reason, always seemed easier to just use the experiment window.

That is the cultural forge... use the one inside the building up the hill from that forge.
