The staff can track when one player gives a large amount of plat to another player for nothing in exchange, and that's (one part of) how they catch RMTers. People used to try and get around this in various ways, for instance by pretending to gamble and lose to each other (a big part of why gambling is banned: it's RMT cover).

It's therefore not at all outside the realm of possibility for someone in this community to use the forum as "cover". You have to understand, there's been a lot of drama in these forums, and RMT is like a drama beacon.

But at the same time ... there are also lots of nice people that just give away incredible gifts to complete strangers. I myself once had a random player I'd never met give me a JBB (worth well over 30k at the time) many years ago, so I certainly don't want to suggest that everyone's a crook either.

I'm just saying that from an outsider's perspective it can be hard to distinguish the two here, so I'm only cautiously optimistic about this.

I have had private dealings with both Menden and Rogean, and they both know I'd never do anything shady in the game.

It's just a little disheartening that because I won something, people automatically label it as an RMTer.

Like I said, pull the logs, I have nothing to hide. It's just a sad day when someone's good will is automatically labeled as something underhanded.

Makes me wonder about the holiday raffles that one guy does every year. Never saw him being accused of anything.

I think you're looking at it the wrong way. I was cautiously optimistic, and while a few others did label you an RMTer ... those people would have used any excuse to yell "RMTer", even if they don't at all believe you are one.

They're called trolls, and if you're worried about being labeled anything by trolls, the solution is to just accept that this forum/life has trolls, and consider it a tiny tiny price to pay to win 300k (if you truly did ;)).

FWIW years later I found a random Shaman in Sebilis and gave him the JBB to complete the cycle (although by then it was only a 20k item). Hopefully it started a "pay it forward" tradition where he someday later gave it to yet another Shaman ... but if so I'll never know (I'd have to dig through my logs to even find the Shaman's name at this point ...)

This is the most blatant RMT cover I've ever seen. Thomacles was seen in guild chat literally ONE day prior blabbing about how OP Holgresh Elder Beads are on a necro, and how badly he wants them. Next day and he's in the tunnel WTB-ing Elder Beads after someone magically "gave" him 300k. I don't give a shit if he's in my guild or not, the guy is a dumbass.

The plat seller couldn't even come up with a decently believable story about why he'd spend the time / trouble of selling off high end items just to turn around and give all the plat away. This wouldn't even be hard to execute. All they have to do is have the plat seller make a post and keep it open ready to delete or edit the thread if anyone else responds before the plat buyer does.

Please tell me the GM's aren't going to let this slide, if so then expect there to be a lot more RMT of this nature in the future. Thomacles, you're an idiot... and so are the rest of you gullible mother fuckers that believe this bullshit.

Bob decides he's played on P99 long enough, and wants to "cash out"
Bob uses the Internet to find someone willing to pay him $$$ for plat
Bob conducts a "give-away" where he gives the buyer their plat
Bob also gives other legitimate gifts to strangers to make it look like one big harmless giveaway
GMs realize Bob is RMTing ... so they block all accounts that received gifts from Bob, until they can establish who paid for their gifts and who didn't


Now look, the staff aren't dicks, and they don't want to ban someone for getting a gift ... but they're also human and they have to separate the cheaters from the non-cheaters. As strongNpretty suggested, this can be tricky for them, and so it's a good idea to not accept large gifts (if someone gives you, say, 3k plat, the staff can easily figure out you didn't RMT for that plat ... but if you get something bigger that might be more challenging) ...

... unless you're willing to risk the (relatively small, in the grand scheme of things) chance that you might temporarily lose your account while things get sorted out.

Nicely said Lor.. Anybody who falls under that umbrella of RMT will be treated as guilty before innocent.. And with such little staff, you can't blame them, it's the easiest way to deal with it.. Why go through the effort of selling helmet and then almost immediately turn around and give the money away? Why not just give the helmet away?

The method in which the giveaway happened is also suspicious. Intended to give a large lump sum to an individual as quickly as possible.

What's the motive? RMT makes the most sense.

Heh, I actually picked the 3k number because I knew it was "safe", having done many "3k giveaways" to new players over the years (in exchange for wiki work: no free handouts from this Barbarian ;)).

I've actually been meaning to do a new one soon, but in the past I used to have more stringent rules (like "add 3 per-level hunting guide spots to earn the plat"). This time I want to make it more generic, so that it wouldn't just be about working on my "pet projects" in the wiki. Something to the effect of "come up with a plan for making some cool improvement to the wiki, then I'll tell you if it's enough to earn 3k, then you go do it and earn the 3k" ... I just need to work out the exact details first.
