View Full Version : Extraordinary Act of Kindness

I was part of an excellent group on Orc Hill this evening for some time. We were doing very well together. Then all of a sudden out of nowhere comes this Cleric named Gramaton <Mercs of Norrath>. We offer to give him donations for good buffs but he replies "no need to donate" then proceeds to buff us with Bravery and other fun stuff. We thank him heartily and we proceed to kick orc butt. After a few minutes he comes back and starts handing out gear to everyone. He gave me 5 pieces of bronze armor and a bracer of battle also a Dwarven 2 Handed Axe. This was a significant upgrade all in all to a level 3 Paladin. Haha. He gave out several other pieces of good armor to my other groupmates before moving along on his way.
I was floored by this extraordinary act of kindness. It's great to see someone come out and help others like that with absolutely nothing in return but thanks and /bow /cheer.
I've seen some people say they didn't like Mercs of Norrath but I saw a really good side to at least one of their members which spoke volumes to me.
Thanks again to Gramaton for making my night. I can't wait to keep playing!

Thats all well and good and I give the guy props for wanting to be nice but I think hes hurting you. I hope you soon realise just how harsh this server's community is and you learn to play under those conditions. This isnt the live EQ we knew 1999-2001 or however long you played. People have grown much more greedy and less charitable which was likely caused by today's MMO's like WoW. Everyone has lost patience becuase they are not use to needing it anymore and it always frustrates others who are patient which in return makes those people inpatient as well. Bottom line is, this server is cut throat so you better have a hidden dagger ready to stab someone else in the back like everyone else :p.

This is just ridiculous. What we need is more acts of kindness and more appreciation of such, not promotion of the idea of backstabbing everyone. Helping a new player is harmful? That's utter bull.
When I was a lowbie people did exactly the same thing for me and ya know what it did? It made me appreciate them, and remember them when some jackhole screwed me over. And it caused me to commit acts of kindness to others. This is what needs to be promoted on this server.
It's not that people have lost patience or grown more greedy across the boards. It's more that you've become more suspicious and cynical because of the few who are and always have been.
Personally, I commend the charitable deed and the OP giving praise for such. And will give free ports to Gramaton to show my appreciation.

I haven't played on the server for a very long time, but I've already seen some very charitable individuals. I have no doubt that there are a fair number of greedy people on the server as well, and I don't disagree that other MMOs may well have contributed to some of the attitudes, but given the relatively small percentage of the server I've dealt with so far I would venture a guess that the good outweigh the bad which probably has a lot to do with this server's success.

Gramaton is a great guy and it's an honor to be affiliated with him. I'm in Mercs of Norath and I must say that they are a great group of people to chat and play with.
I do what I can to hand out free buffs with characters able to do so. I do this because I know how great it can be to receive such help at lower levels. I will gladly stop on my journeys to dish out clarity and haste buffs with my enchanter and heal those in need with my cleric.

Generally, the forum community != the in game community. Even people I've originally found to be abrasive on the boards I've actually met in game and found them to be pretty nice. I don't think this is the last act of kindness you'll see.
My guess is people are just crankier on the forums because they are probably some place where they can't play EQ.

I'm used to forums being a cranky vocal minority as I spend a lot of time on them while at work. What i've seen in game is a lot of people who just want to group up, XP, and have a good time. My experience in game has been very positive so far on 2 different newbie characters.

I agree, we need more random acts of kindness!!
When I first started as a Dark Elf Cleric, at level 6, a high level Dark Elf Cleric sent me a tell, asking me what my current armor was. I had cloth and one piece of leather, and she asked me to come to Neriak. She gave me almost a full set of bronze and other items such as a Foreman's Tunic, a Bloodstained Mantle, a Cold Iron Morningstar and more! She assisted me with the Disciple of Innoruuk quest and has helped me whenever I needed it.
She made me so happy with her generosity that I have done the same ever since. I have never sold one piece of my armor, but given away what I could to new people on the server. I often go out of my way to find a newbie and unload my bags full of Bronze armor, throw them platinum for spells and a few buffs too. I friend each person I help and check up on them occasionally, just to see how they're doing, just like Jenova did, the Dark Elf Cleric who helped me.
I found a Burynai Legion Gi in Droga. I saw it was selling for 1k in EC. Then, I found a little Dark Elf Cleric, and gave it to her. She was so happy and still sends me tells to this day.
Don't you guys get the same warm fuzzies that I do when you make someone's day?

Absolutely! :D
There's another post in this subforum about a guy who was a real jackhole to my group in CoM. It's fine, it happens. It doesn't mean I'll turn cynical or look to backstab him. He just won't get groups, ports or rez's from any of our alts. Ever.
But I still delight in helping people, just like people did for me and for you. And it promotes more of the same from us. As the saying goes: The life you save may be your own.
There are always consequences on this server for our actions, whether they be good, or bad. Whether we fully know about them or not.

Interesting view you have there. Interestingly skewed, that is.
Sounds to me like you've been spending too much time around raiding guilds and in RnF. Other than those two debaucheries, I find the in-game community generally pretty sensible.
A large part of how you see the community depends on how you yourself interact with people. Treat people the way you want to be treated. If you are kind in how you present yourself, you will get a kind response and have a pleasant experience.

It all comes down to playstyle. There is a huge chunk of players like Brad_Mo123 who are all about insanely long camps for uber crazy items, or hardcore raiding 24/7. The worst of the worst won't give you the time of day, will not want you anywhere near their camp, and would rather destroy extra items then give them away. That's just how it is.
But there is also a high number of players who just enjoy playing the game. Random quests, grouping, helping others, handing out gear to the little ones, etc.
Each playstyle still results in fun and personal fulfillment. And the latter is a lot....and I mean a lot...less stressful.

I think the perception that people are less friendly and willing to help out on this server is totally inaccurate. I still remember people who helped me out when I first started, and I try to help out people myself by handing out weapon upgrades or other small items to people that are new to the server.

All mmo's have nice people on them, in EQ 2 someone gave me a ton of spellbooks and some plat just because, in wow my guildies gave my BC so I could raid with them, also, I treated a problem with a trade deal I made honestly and this guy GAVE me my epic flyer which is the most expensive end game skill.
TL'dr you're talking in generalizations that aren't true, of course mmo's have some jerks in them they are available to the general public what do you expect?

This is entirely true, aside from the few griefing miscreants. Much like the old proverb:
In order to have friends, one must show themselves friendly. There are loads of good people on here that I owe a lot to.

Im glad to hear that random acts of kindness are still contagious. Of of the strongest assets of everquest is the sense of community and exploration, meeting new people and making new friends. In 99 when everquest launched I was amazed at how many people who were higher level would buff for free or even give out items to noobs such as myself and it made a world of difference. I would much rather have some good friends in the game and share the experience of grouping together rather than to have a bank full of thousands of platinum. Also, being a high level cleric allows me to go back to some lower level zones and get useful items such as bloodstained tunics. Sure I could probably sell alot of these items for hundreds of plat but I wouldn't get that warm fuzzy feeling for making someones day by gifting them items they could use. I would much rather give a fbss to a lowbie who could make use of it through their leveling and love and appreciate the item rather than sell it for a couple thousand plat. Even when it comes to rezes, I will go out of my way to rez someone not expecting a donation. Yes, I will take donations but if someone has nothing to offer its not a problem. Cleric is my favorite class in eq because I love helping/buffing/rezing people just to do it. And also to pwn those undead :). Remember, one random act of kindness can make all the difference in someone else's experience. You never know who is watching or only good things can come from being good to others.

I have not seen much bad on this server.... I remember a PLer taking orc 1... so I started taking orcs at my own slow pace and he flipped out saying he would get me banned.
Guess I'm going to the slammer eh?
But I've also seen a newbie complain about PLers in chat at orc 1 and the PLers were like we didn't know you wanted to kill anything and gladly left....

I don't know what he's talking about - everyone I've encountered has been very friendly.
Do they tolerate beggars or people that just don't carry their weight? No, probably not, but I haven't seen any of this cutthroat greed you're talking about - it most likely exists in the raiding game and frankly that's the downside to everything being global instead of instanced.
