View Full Version : Issue with strange screen-only freeze, but the game continues.

I keep having this issue where the game screen freezes, however the mouse still works, I can still hear the game, and I can still type /q in the game, the screens is just frozen. It has happened in front of Felwithe probably 10 times, in neriak once and EC once.
So to me it seems maybe location based, but it does not always happen.
Things I've tried:
New GPU drivers, reinstall of Titanium, using Duxa app to remove all the expansion files that are unnecessary, trying to find something similar on the forums but I found nothing like this.
I'm not sure what else to try. Maybe someone else has had this issue and resolved it.
Thanks.

I've had the same issue with a recent install about < 3 weeks ago. It's mostly happened in Overthere, specifically looking south in the outpost, and just happened in neriak foreign entrance. Thought it had something to do with the new computer/new install. Fiddled with CPU affinity, no joy.
Thinking of trying to just grab my eq folder from my old computer.

Are you using an Nvidia GPU? I’ve had this problems for months on both my laptop and PC running Nvidia graphics. Laptop stopped having problems when I switched to onboard graphics.

Have the same issue, randomly. Can sometimes occur if some outside application is opened or starts to run, other times not so sure.

sounds like maybe it's from UAC prompt.
Control Panel > User Accounts > User Accounts. Drag the slider on the left of the User Account Control window from the default setting down to the second lowest, which says “Notify my only when apps try to make changes to my desktop (do not dim my desktop).”

Nah it's not from UAC I would hear a "dingaling" plus these are specific locations/view directions it's happening on. I fixed the UAC issue by setting it one tick lower so it doesn't dim the screen and cause a display change state.

Toggle your full screen. alt + enter, alt + enter. Should fix the issue.

When I toggle it crashes, same for a lot of people.

yup something like resetdevice() failed
If toggling full screen crashes you - change the full screen resolution in your eqclient.ini. It's trying to switch to something either the client or your PC doesn't like.

To what?
... to something that doesn't crash it. It requires some experimentation as it's different for everyone. Personally, I use:
[VideoMode]
Width=1280
Height=768
WidthWindowed=1280
HeightWindowed=768
WinEQWidth=1280
WinEQHeight=768
FullscreenBitsPerPixel=32
FullscreenRefreshRate=48
WindowedWidth=2048
WindowedHeight=1152
On this laptop (MS Surface), but I very rarely play from this system as it's my "work" computer.

I used to get these issues all the time, and then I stopped using WinEQ2.

This fixed that problem, I had my full screen width/height same as my windowed.
Excited to try it out, but issue still persists, zoned into nek foreign and froze, alt entered, and got full screen black, got into windowed, windowed black then alt entered again and ResetDevice() failed. Also I dont use wineq because it's more trouble than it solves for me.

Here is my VideoMode section. Both are set to my desktop resolution:
[VideoMode]
WindowedWidth=2560
WindowedHeight=1440
Width=2560
Height=1440
FullscreenBitsPerPixel=32
FullscreenRefreshRate=0
I also run my shortcut to Everquest in Windows 10 with the following setup:

i clicked the box that disables fullscreen optimization and tested my luck at the OT/SF ZL (that's usually where i crash the most), and no crashes so far! I also changed my fullscreen resolution settings in the ini just incase i DO crash.

Ended up getting the freeze, but alt-enter'ing in and out of fullscreen worked! FYI.

I think I've gotten the frozen screen 6 times since I've changed it, and I was able to fix it 4 of the 6 times.
But like Mcoy said, you have to change it to something that doesnt make you crash.
