rustle ui 2: rise of the apes
a ui for project 1999 blue or red server.

download:

this is what we've got:
- we got big ol' health bars all up in here. i'm old.
- every slot can be clicked from the hot bar.
- the inventory window shows all bag slots.
- many of the ui elements have been removed, such as the friend window and the bard buff window, among others.

this is a fork from qqui. shout out to cucumbers for his sweet ui which inspired this one. much respect.

new stuff since rustle.1 ui:
standard & 4k - the player and party health bars will gradually change color when losing (or gaining) health.
standard & 4k - added a one window bank, similar to the inventory window.
standard & 4k - added a light border around empty hot buttons and bag slots to help with visual clarity.
standard & 4k - added a drop shadow on buff names to more easily read in bright places, like velious.
4k - the vendor "buy" button text has been fixed.
4k - added the title bar to chat windows.
standard & 4k - cut a lot of the fat. compared to rustle.1, this has a much smaller install size.

things to watch out for:
if your bags have less than 10 slots, but you put an item in a bag slot you don't actually have, the item will end up on your "cursor". it's not recommended you do that, maybe it'll get deleted or something, but your mileage may vary.

how to install:
- extract the folder to your p99 ui directory. like c:\project1999\uifiles\ or where ever your install is.
- after logging into the game type: /loadskin rustle2 (or /loadskin rustle2.4k)
- now check your immersion cuz you're about to feel rustled.

Is it just me or is the pet window missing a "click handle"? I can't figure out how to drag it, or where to right-click on it to unlock it, if it's locked.

should be able to grab it around the edges. however i just noticed that i forgot to update the pet bar. i'll get that updated soon.

Also, not only is Vener's life yellow now, but I can actually drag the pet window, so something (either your new code, or re-loading the UI) fixed that too :) Thanks!

For anyone looking for a "usability focused" UI I highly recommend it. Giant health/mana bars, giant target health bar, fairly large XP bar, you can right-click any item you wear without opening another window, and you can open all your bags at once in a single grid window. All very cool.

P.S. Honestly I know how much work this sort of thing must be, and it must be obnoxious to hear people ask for you to waste even more of your time to serve them. So keeping that in mind, these are just thoughts for if you want to make improvements; otherwise please disgregard this ungrateful Barbarian:


A slightly smaller spell font would be nice, just because every time I see Pox of Bertoxxulous it looks like the UI is broken, or like I have another window covering the bottom of the spell
The actual mana number (not %) is pretty small. The percentage is great (and of course the mana bar is awesome), but when I'm low on mana and trying to decide "do I have enough for one last ____?", it's kind of a tiny number amongst lots of others
Am I missing where the "max weight" is? I see my weight, and it's cool that it's red/green, but it'd be nice to know "how much crap do I have to delete before it goes green again?" Maybe you could put the max (or current/max) in the upper left corner of the inventory window? There's a bit of bare space there.

But again, it's an awesome UI, and I'll likely keep using it even if there's never another edition!

The total is just the strength right? And the strength is placed very near the current weight. Does it add value to do a current/total? Looks pretty clean as it is.

About the spell icon graphics, I played around with upscaling them from 256x256 to 1024x1024 using Topaz Gigapixel AI which does some fancy AI junk to try to add back in detail (was used for some of the texture projects for p99 + a lot of other older games).

I'm not sure it helped that much, but I can send them to you if you want to check them out.

I've only been using your UI for a little while, but I like the look. I agree that current mana and health in raw numbers in addition to the current % would have useful.

I'd have liked a close box in the all-bag UI window instead of having to escape out of it.

Also, when group member is not in the zone, the group window doesn't have their name above their slot (although hovering over it shows the name).

I haven't played with the pet window which you already mentioned you'd be addressing.

Anyways...as it is I'm glad to be using it. Thanks.

probably? monks might work differently, that was what i had my mind on when i responded last night. but i'd have to ask some of my monk friends if that's the case.

are you using the 4k version? there's been a bunch of issues with that one. i might be able to figure out some kinda work around, but it'll probably be imperfect. if it's the standard one i'll have to look into it.

version 2.1
- standard & 4k: some group window changes. the class & level have been moved away from the player windows and put on the group window. in addition the deity has been added (of agnostic is my favorite). the health and mana have been made slightly larger. and there were some other small adjustments to slight rearrangements.
- standard & 4k: added a "done" button to the inventory window
- standard & 4k: now that the class & level have been moved off the player window, i rearranged the window a little bit.
- standard: fixed some spell names from getting cut off at bottom in a weird way on the spell casting window.
- 4k: group member names now show up when they're in a different zone. it's imperfect, kinda janky because of the titanium client, but it's better than nothing at all.

How do I get it to work? Edit: This is on Blue server

Hmm not sure, Ive used this folder for ages now... I tried to load it from another EQ folder but didnt work there either, but could have the same problem as my other folders... Gonna have to make a fresh install and see if that works I guess(just then I gotta reinstall all the other "custom" stuff again, ugh)
Really want this UI!
Perhaps delete my UIfiles folder and copy a brand new one in? Guess Ill lose all my customization in the UI then.

whatever customizations you have made can be saved as a different UI if you rename the default folder to something else. however, you'll need to get a new default folder. i don't think eq will work without it. here is mine (https://www.dropbox.com/s/so077k6zr3w9f1z/default.zip?dl=0). hopefully that will work for you.

Having issues of the game crashing any time I loot my corpse immediately after I die (possibly on coin pickup?) also had a crash when trading with a charm pet. Only occurs when Rustle UI is used, doesn't crash on default or duxa ui. any ideas why?

It's a bug that happens with any UI that has bag slots in a UI window. It doesn't crash if you reload the UI before looting your corpse.



Alternatively, you could use a different inventory window, as that's the cause of the crashing.

That's really too bad. Rustle is a great UI, but I'm not sure I want to have to remember to reload my UI before every time I loot (or crash).

Well its odd, because it didn't happen initially, and then it started up. I thought well maybe i had stuff in those 9th and 10th slots when i only had an 8 slot bag. I checked that wasn't the case. Then noticed it was when I picked up coin on the corpse, subsequent looting wasn't an issue. The trading with a pet was a singular crash, maybe unrelated. I don't know if you get 10 slot bags if that fixes the issue, I haven't tried that yet. And I haven't been able to identify why it works initially and then started to fail later.

I do notice that the contents of a bag will remain in the inventory window when you swap bag positions with an empty slot, so perhaps its some sort of memory issue. I don't know enough about the UI system though.

Yeah same for me: it was fine at first, but lately every time I loot I crash. It might have to do with which characters I've been playing and what bags the have, but I haven't been paying attention: it's definitely happening to Loramin with 2 items and 6x 10 slot bags.

I also noticed the same thing with the "lag" on the bag window, but I could live with that for the convenience of seeing all the bags at once (if it weren't for the crashes).

Are there any plans to make a 1440p version? The 1080p version just looks so tiny at 1440p, and the 4k version is enormous. Probably a nice middle ground somewhere in there.

So I was trying to mix and match Duxa and this one, only wanting to replace the hotbutton uber inventory and bags with the Duxa version to see if that would prevent a crash. But I kept getting an invalid error.

I know next to nothing about a lot of things, .XML being one of them, can you list the exact files I'd have to swap? I believe I had tried EQUI_HotButtonWnd and EQUI_Inventory but it would just load the default UI when i tried to /load

Uhh... *deer in headlights* I just added some random UI pieces. I'll try and see if I can figure out where I got each of them from. It was a horizontal buff bar with bigger icons (honey, I'm blind as sh*t!), a different inventory and bank window because old school here can't deal with tiny windows with itty bitty slots for equipment and bags. A different style actions window, and a spell gems window and spell book.

Hahaha, I guess that's about half the UI, but like I said, it was fun doing it because the elements took on the background of your UI. I'll take some screenshots later and link them here. Can't today, way too much going on this evening. But hang in there.

Trying to mix and match Duxa UI pieces with another UI is a huge pain and usually results in the UI failing to load.


I would suggest using QQui UI pieces instead of Duxa.

UI looks great. I seem to have the crash issue that usually occurs after a death if I open inventory or loot corpse. I need to check the dbg.log file and see what I’m getting.

If you downloaded the 4K version, download the standard version instead.

The 4K version is meant to scale up the UI for 4K resolution so if you aren’t using 4K resolution the UI would appear very large.

The crashing is a tradeoff of using any UI with a permanent open-bag display, it's not specific to rustle ui.

Whenever you die (or shuffle your bags around in your inventory), do a /load and refresh the ui and you won't crash.

Here's a really quick n dirty replace (i.e. not tested more than 2 seconds, but theoretically should work) of the open-bag inventory with the standard velious inventory. This *should* solve your crashing problems and hopefully not cause any issues with the rest of the ui.

This is a great UI; my favorite in a very long time.

The only thing I'd like to see added is some type of navigation buttons on the hotbar button window. I finally learned that I can do CTRL-1 through CTRL-0 to get to other pages, but having buttons would be nice.

(I *did* copy in the actions window from p99blue though, but only because I'm such in the habit of inviting/following from that window instead of from where those two buttons had been moved.)

I'm trying to open up my chat window input box in size by a pixel or two to prevent the bottom tail portions of 'g' and 'y' getting cut off when i type. this only happens with rustle2 ui, and i know i can edit it somewhere, just don't know which file to mess with. anyone might have an idea and can lend a hand please? would be great

Buff window for me was just offscreen. Putting the mouse cursor in the top right corner, clicking and dragging brought it back in frame.

Hope this helps someone else out there.

Alrighty, so anyone else with buff window issues. The buff window for me was actually off screen. Putting my mouse cursor in the farthest top right corner, clicking and dragging brought the window back into frame.

4k version is awesome, thanks so much! Like everyone else has mentioned, that inventory window seemed to be the culprit for crashes during trades and was going to keep me from using this otherwise awesome UI.

To fix this, I used Notepad++ to ultimately grab all of the xml out of default_old "EQUI_Inventory.xml" and paste that in the rustle ui "EQUI_Inventory" file.

I have completed a couple trades and it doesn't crash. I'll delete/edit this post if this potential solve turns out to not really be the trick.

Keep in mind, we're using default_old. If you want to use the default ui, use the "EQUI_Inventory3" file, the EQUI_Inventory in the default ui doesn't work. I don't like this one because the inventory was still being shown in a weird format, but trades worked on that if you prefer.

Everything else is still rustled, which is great for 4k.

The 4k Version had UI elements that were way to big and the standard version everything is a little too small. Playing on 2560 x 1440.

Is there any solution to this?

It's being at a 1440p thing. I also play at 1440p and it's hard to find a UI that fits; 1080p is way to small and 4k is too big.

All interfaces can be player-customized, but you have to learn the form of XML that Verant designed for UIs.

(Or, if you don't want to learn all that, you could always try and bribe someone who does to make the custom interface for you.)

Square bars instead of rounded, some new icons, horizontal spellbook, slim inventory, original action menu and more.

Its not possible to separate them, you can either remove it entirely or attach the status information to any other panel, f.e. the player window, like in DuxaUI

There is no Status window. That information would normally be displayed in the inventory window, but the person who made this UI moved it to the group window.

You could resize the group window to hide the right half of the window. You'd have to make room for the invite/disband buttons on the left side of the window and then move them over there as well though.

Then you'd have to have that information in another window. One option would be to use the inventory window from QQui. Another possiblity would be to add it to the Player window.

Has the bug been fixed where if you die and then upon death, you open your inventory, you crash.

It's the only thing stopping me from using Rustle at the moment. Sometimes it's just involuntary to open my inventory during a corpse run and then I crash.

When I follow these steps, the Rustle UI fails to load entirely and I'm left with the Velious UI. I'd love to use the Rustle UI if I can change the bags to normal. I'd appreciate any help on the matter.

Using and loving this UI, it is fantastic. Ironed out all the kinks.... except one.

Some of the UI is doing what you see above where some of the UI elements and text seems to be out of place/floating to the left or right. It is only a minor nuisance but I cannot figure out how to fix it. I'd appreciate any insight.

I was originally skeptical of this UI, but it has grown on me, especially at 4k resolution. The inventory crash after-death thing is a bit of a bummer though.

This seems to be a consequence of choosing a custom font to render UI elements with in the ALT+O menu. The element spacing in the pictured UI fragment is rigidly defined, i.e. <x> pixels wide <y> pixels high, changing the font size doesn't scale the spacing. You'll need to pick a font which fits into the assumptions baked into the XML defining that element OR edit the XML yourself to accommodate your chosen font. Good luck.
