In Options, you can click off Allow Auto-duck, the 6th button from the bottom. This may save your life.
Auto-duck can get you killed if you're fleeing and you get too close to an object like a tree or a low archway. If Allow Auto-duck is enabled, the game will duck you, ostensibly to help you pass under the object, but it also makes you run slower and prevents you from casting spells, which can lead to death when things get hairy.
You can still manually duck. You can also change what your Duck command is set to. Since I mainly move with WASD, I set Duck to x and Sit to Ctrl-x.
Auto-duck: it will duck you up.
