View Full Version : The strongest pet on green

So I've always LOVED pet classes, and in everquest they're the absolute coolest (except for Dark Age of Camelot that had a class where you could have 3 pets and two of them healed you). Anyhow I wanted to get the biggest baddest pet possible so I rolled mage. I was reading through the wiki and came across this.
https://wiki.project1999.com/Pet_Guide#Focus_Items
Whoa! These sound awesome...but the minimum level is 33? Is there any way to get them before level 33? Can I buy one from EC tunnel if I farm enough plat? I'm literally willing to level a druid and sell ports to get enough plat to buy one so my mage experience will be awesome starting at level 4 if that's possible.
Also...anything else that I can use to buff my pet? I know I can give it some weapons (And armor??) but they will only last until the next pet summon. Anything else like focus that a noob like me wouldn't know about? Thanks guys!

If they’re no drop you can’t trade them so you can’t buy them

Gotcha, that answers my question. Sounds like I don't have to worry about them until I'm 33 then =)
I choose YOU, queefachoo!
I don't think those quests have minimum levels in actuality, but the min level is just what you should be to reasonably try to get the drops on your own.

There is no required level on those quests (hardly any quests actually have required levels). You can get the focus items at level 1 if you can buy all 4 turn-in items. They're all available from other players and you can probably put together the plat pretty quickly.
You probably want all four eventually. You could get them in some priority order, like maybe stein shovel torch broom? Or shovel stein broom torch? Whatever pets you use the most, probably.

49 earth pet OP asF. Annihilates and with a bit of buffing is just a tanky as the tankiest tank. Throw a DS on him and watch kobolds crumble.

You can do it early... even untwinked. The broom or stein or whichever focus item you are after mainly costs 200ish pp for the central item of the quest. If you go and farm up a bunch of bone chips (they sell 4-5pp each) you could do it. Or go around grabbing things and reselling (like there is a stein that drops from guards in the feerrott that has a lot of charisma https://wiki.project1999.com/A_Crude_Stein , they rot almost always since they are lore and drop every time).
Or go sell peoples scythes for them in feerrott or offer to exchange silver / gold / platinum from people doing long camps....or bringing people stacks of food in far off places. All this stuff you can do at level 5 (since you need that level to enter some dungeons). Sure you might die, but in the end you will raise the platinum you need.
I'd also hang around cazic thule if I were you, maybe even find someone with an extra they don't need that is rotting (this happens if someone is powerleveling an alt at the gators, the items are lore so they sometimes rot...boom, that's your big cost item out of the way).
The other things are smaller and easier to get (giant toes or things like that you can get by going to the zone and seeing if anyone has an extra....just explain you are on a quest!).
Even showing up to zones and asking nearby people if they could lend a hand slaying something or another usually works. You might have to sit around a while until someone not busy passes nearby, but eventually you can find someone.
I do lots of low level questing. The adventure!! The excitement!!!

I did just what you said. I ported till I had enough plat to buy the items and my mage has had the focus items since around lvl 10.
It's fun to have the biggest....pet.

Nah, you don't have to and should not wait to be in your early 30s to get them. Focused pets will make leveling much faster
Focused fire pet with awesome DS if you fight a single mob, water/earth pet otherwise was the way I went
I got the parts for all 4 focus items when my Mage was 20ish, and I got the Najena parts with my shaman that was 27 or 28 at the time. Died a couple of times to the goblin magicians, then I stuck to DE magicians that are easier to take on without any way to single pull

I dunno why the air pet is always last pick!! A stun is sooo powerful.... since it's an active damage mitigation (stopping the enemy from attacking or casting).
In a group that is great. And solo that is great (making up for the lower HPs). And the invis on top of it makes it just a stand-out pet!! For most situations.

In my rather short experience on blue, air pet for some reason is the weakest of all our pets. I haven't played long enough with MS I or MSII, I must have summoned each a couple of times but according to wiki regular focused pets are better than MS pets.
I'm not 53 yet, so I don't know about the 53 air pet vs 51 earth pet, but pre 50 the other 3 will be better. Only time I was not completely disappointed with air pet was when I was using the lvl 49 one vs Feeerrott spectres, it was faring about as well as fire/ earth pet. But HGs in Rathe Mountains kicked an air pet's butt in no time. Go figure

Are MS pets a stepping stone between unfocused / focused pets, or are they just fashion at all costs?

Since they cannot be focused by any item, they're more a nice toy to have silly pets (only time I used MS I when I hit 34 was to get a Reanimated Hand pet Unrest at basement camp) than a real upgrade
I think on live some MS used to be better than regular pets, but not on p99

A dead mob is even more active damage mitigation. I like air; he's fun. But generally suboptimal.

Strongest pet in-game pre-hate was level 49 water pet buffed with Staff of Elemental Mastery: Water. Max-level, focused with the staff hits for 58. Seems significantly more resilient than un-focused pets.
Now that the staffs for earth and fire are in, you'd have to check DPS parses.

Oh, and the strongest pet is a charmed level 51 rogue pet from hate ;)

Until the tank dies from a big pull. Then the low hp air pet dies, then group dies.
Or keep earth pet up. Tank dies and earth pet mops everything up and sabes the group.
Outside of raids earth pet is overall the superior pet

Pets are heavily nerfed on p99 now if you want sick pet damage make an animist on DAOC :)

Pets in EQ, DAoC and AO are the strongest pets in MMO history by far.

Quoted for truth. Air pet seriously under rated round these parts.

Lowest hp , fire or earth are meatier pics
water and air are usually the pets you use in a group with air being better
water is like 5% more dps id rather have a stun myself :)

water's strength comes when you get the staff, which is much easier to get than the others. +1 level does more than just +2max dmg, overall damage and mitigation goes up pretty significantly. as 2nd best tank and highest damage, its pretty well rounded for group or solo use, especially when focused
earth root is too unreliable to ever actually count on it solo, and rooting running mobs just makes you take more damage overall.
air is fine in groups, but way too frail for solo. stun is too unreliable to actually be of benefit if you're soloing casters, you're much better off with a higher HP pet than hoping you'll prevent nukes 1 in 10 times
fire is the lowest hp of them all, but if you're duoing with a healer they make superb xp grinding pets. in groups if they're not doing the tanking they are completely pointless, use anything instead

If your strategy while grouping is "what to do when the tank dies" ... then things have already gone horribly wrong (and shoulda run / gated before the tank died).
But on a close fight an air pet is going to mitigate more damage for the tank (helping them survive better).
It also lets casters nuke sooner without things running off the tank (since the stun of the air pet is a bunch of agro, and if it's agro on the pet it will stay hitting the next highest PC with agro).
And damage wise, air pets are the 2nd highest in damage (just behind the damage proc of water pets).

Airpet is my hands-down favorite when grouping in a zone w caster mobs. The interrupt stub is just so incredibly useful (at least until waterpet starts BSing!)
And damage wise, air pets are the 2nd highest in damage (just behind the damage proc of water pets).
Isn't the fire pet damage proc the same as water?
So about that torch or shield trick...do you get the same benefits by just giving the pet 2 summoned daggers or swords? I may be doing this wrong, lol

Not a good strategy if pet selection is based on the perfect group that never had the tank die.
The air pet and earth pet are the same dmg and air pet dmg mitigation is trivial.
Equipping an air pet with 2 stun whips is pretty brutal.

Waterpet with an ebony bladed sword and a gnoll hide lariat, cast a DS on that bad boy and he might turn into Captain Planet!

SK pet hands down da best.
For real though Enc/druid/necro/bard charms is best
For mages though its personal, situational preference, and gear.
Focus items first off trump all clearly. but after that pick the pet u need to use or want 2 us.
I been thinking I want to make a mage for fun but knowing the enchanter basically out does it in every capacity makes it pointless

Enchanters get summoned pets too, and slow and CC. They can comfy farm more comfy than you.
