View Full Version : A Lot More *Crashes* Lately?

Twice this morning I crashed when I tried to loot my corpse. I've also seen lots of other reports of crashes lately, and just in general I've been having a ton more crashes lately (not "zoning issues" or any other sort of problem, but specifically the software failing mid-game wheneverything else was working fine).
Normally I never crash in the middle of playing the game. Is this just me, or did the devs inadvertently break something?

I've been playing 6-8 hours a day for the last couple weeks. No crashes for me. :(
I've even looted my corpse a couple times :o
Isn't there a crash log or debug log? (may be wrong)

Weird: I just restarted to see if that would help, and got another one. Might be a Linux issue though; I just tried updating WINE so maybe that will fix it.

Possibly, but if so I'm not sure which file to look at.

I've never had much of a problem at all since I've played on this server, minus a random crash here or there. It's not EQ without it.
But as stated: Lately I've been crashing a lot. Like every time I play at least once. The big noticeable one for me is after a death and looting my corpse. It's 50/50 if I'll crash or not. I've never had this issue until recently. Less frequent, I'll crash when zoning. But I chalk that up to normal EQ.

Yes, this is exactly what I've noticed. What operating system are you on?

I have been crashing a lot lately too. It seems to be happening when im going down, or looking at stairs while holding right click.
It just freezes the screen, but i can still move around and do things(like die).

Same thing, mostly in Paineel. Screen freezes, game still running. Sometimes I can /camp desktop blind so at least I don't have to wait for the LD to resolve.

Played several hours today on one computer on Blue and another computer on Green - at the same time. No crashes. Linux here also. Maybe just lucky.

player corpses were disappearing early this morning, maybe they were trying to fix the crash bug and bugged out the corpses.
maybe a sign of hope

I've had some issues but not exactly as you describe. I've narrowed my crashes down to two locations primarily, The Overthere (anywhere there) or when I'm on the South Karana aviak ramp. Happens every time. If there's something I can change, I'd sure like to know what it is. I've fallen off the aviak ramps twice now and went LD. Thanks

Huh. As a (non-P99) developer, by first instinct is to try and find the "outline" or details of a bug, as that's how you figure out where you need to fix things. This is why I kept asking about Linux: if it was Linux-specific that'd be a relevant detail (although it seems like it isn't).
What's frustrating about this one is that it seems difficult to nail down the "outline" of it, and in fact the main thing that seems to link all of us is just that it A) involves application crashes (something I never used to experience anywhere close to this much), and B) it seems semi-repeatable under similar conditions (eg. looting your corpse or falling off a ramp seems to trigger it ... but it's not a 100% repeatable trigger either).
Good luck to the devs in trying to track things down with that broad of a bug description :(

I think if someone told me they crashed every time they went up the aviak ramp, I'd look at them suspiciously. But I swear, my butt puckers every time I do it now because I know that IF I'm going to crash, that's when it'll happen.

I can't help much on your specific crashing issues but if you look in your p99 > Everquest > Log > dbg file you should be able to find a clue as to what's going on.
I also found in the main Everquest directory a file called UIErrors.txt. Mine is empty but it may be checking yours out.
Lastly might be an event viewer. Windows has an easy to to check out. Didn't I read somewhere that you're running linux? I know there's something similar for you. Heck, way back when I was running Red Hat (circa 2001 or so) it has an event/crash error log built in.

So would a reasonable guess be that I for some reason am missing some files (eg. spela.png), and before P99 didn't use those files (so I never used to get crashes), but recently it started doing so and now I do?
Only ... that still doesn't explain why the crashes only happen sometimes not (say) every time I loot a corpse.

Those Spel files are included with the p99 patch in the SpellEffects folder.
As to the reason why it's failing, im uncertain.

particle system sounds server to client
spell particle revamp required reverse engineering with how the particle system worked client side
I have some D3DXCreateTextureFromFileEx() failed in my dbg log too. (without crashing)
Like almost every other crash with Titanium client, we can blame the old client and directx. Wish I could have found a solution :|

Yea I started experiencing this issue after trying the Rustle UI, not sure if it's related but seems like it's the most likely culprit.

It's not Rustle UI, its been happening to tons of people, including myself, who are not using it. The crash that seems to be occurring FAR more frequently lately is where the game screen freezes, but you can still move your character and execute commands like /sit, /camp, /q, etc.
I think that many people don't even realize they are retaining control of their character when the screen freezes during this "crash" because the only way you can tell is if you have your audio on then you can still hear the sound effects as the game continues on around you.
Its been happening for months, its just more people are starting to take notice now. I never used to crash before, now this screen freeze BS happens all the time and I usually have to /sit and /camp, or just /q. I've tried fresh p99 reinstalls, fresh UIs, checking all drivers, using the setaffinity thing to use a single core, you name it - I've tried it; nothing has been able to eliminate this screen freeze crash though.
I will say though that if you are using WinEQ2, the screen freeze will just hard crash the client instantly and you won't hear audio afterwards or be able to move your character or execute any commands.
So if you are using WinEQ2 and you are hard crashing instantly a lot more often without the ability to execute commands or hear audio of the game continuing on around you, then try loading the p99 client without using WinEQ2 (make sure its closed completely). You will still get the screen freeze "crash" just as often, but at least this way you can start using /sit, /camp, or /q when the freeze happens, so you don't have to wait as long to get back in game.

This seems to be the same problem I've been having as of late, twice today. It's weird, can move use commands etc.. however stop seeing chat or anything that involves others (PCs or NPCs). Which seems to be what you are describing. I have noticed though that you can see when it is happening by checking the latency bar. The difference in my problem is that I can't quickly reconnect(ocasionally minutes normally hours before I can get back on). When I try to reconnect it will just freeze after I try to join a server or give me a message that says something long the line of server /patch unavailable(sadly can't remember exactly what it says) but when I check here server is "up". Does anybody know why this happens or how to fix it? I've checked my internet connection which is fine tried restarting which doesn't seem to help as well as reinstalling which seems to just waste my time.

Yeah but the weird thing is we all weren't having these crashes for years, and they suddenly started happening, so while old client/directx is likely a factor, I don't see how it could be the main one.
I'll cross post this in bugs (https://www.project1999.com/forums/showthread.php?p=3146496)to try and get dev attention, since it sounds like it's a legitimate one and not just "Loramin's setup is weird" or "there's a bug in Loramin's new UI".

Anyone got a possible fix for this? I seem to consistently freeze in particular spots. OT Skyfire Ramp/Western Wastes/Cobalt Scar are the areas this happens to me the most. I have a Ryzen Processor and a Nvidia GPU running windows 10. I've tried multiple different tweeks with no changes in the amount of times I freeze.

this is the only type of crash i've ever gotten in-game. with the fatal error client crash when logging out and switching accounts often. for me this only ever happened when I would have dynamic lightning enabled, and when it used to be an option to turn on/off in the settings I could simply turn it off and never have that crash. but i like the way on-toon light source works better with it on. but man, imagine being in TOFS and this happening mid fight on floor 6, all keys stuck up there with you at 3am. the worst.
i don't run wineq2 and always realized the game continued running in the background however didn't know i could still issue it commands. I might live next time this happens at least now knowing this since I know where all my nukes and spells are by heart. but man, what a pita.
just deleted my eqclient.ini file today and let eq make a new one, since I haven't done that in a few years. I also run the game as administrator, in compatibility mode (winxp sp2). it's the damn lightning i know it.

Lemme think, I swapped EQ folder a lil while back to a zipped folder I got somewhere, dont remember, its been trimmed down in size and has the custom hd textures or whatever preinstalled, very sleek looking, i also added rustle 2.0 and turned log to TRUE. Is my folder a total bum one?

I've only experienced occasional freezing while zoning (causing me to have to CAD) and/or occasional long zone times (loading bar doesn't even appear for 1 minute+ after hitting the zoneline). Never experienced this on blue, and only on green in the last 2-3 months.
I haven't had any crashing during usual non-zoning-related gameplay.
I don't use WinEQ2 due to it giving me frequent "reset device fail" errors.

My game froze 3 times today (im playing windowed mode) but I could still hear the music and move in game despite the freeze. Never happened to me on previous patch... Playing on green btw

I've noticed since I started playing over the past couple of weeks that there are certain places where just walking, and especially turning my character, will cause the game to just freeze. Like others state you can hear the game, if you move you hear your feet, you can still do / commands (although blindly), and of course, you can get killed by a mob because you don't see anything other than the image your game froze at.
So far this has happened without fail just outside Felwithe and a few times inside. And now inside Bibblebop or somesuch name's place in Rivervale. I've logged into my character four times now and I'm still not out the door of that place. Trust I will never go in there again.
I am hoping (well, as far as an easier solution) that this is on my end and that someone more knowledgeable could tell me what setting I may have wrong, or something I can tweak to keep this from happening. It's (to me) game breaking.

Still happening, if you think its fixed, try walking around in the temple areas in the canyon of OT. It freezes all the time there, every few steps sometimes.
