Rangers aren't bad per se (in Velious) and thinking they are "bad" is pretty ignorant. (Though I'd say they are kinda bad mechanically in classic and Kunark)

They are like marginally less dps than a similarly geared monk or warrior. They have knight-like snap agro and are pefectly fine at tanking slowed mobs or sub-level 45 mobs.

The problem is it's 20 years later and many people know what the best classes are and how to play them to maximize their abilities. So enchanters are everywhere, depreciating ranger utility. Epic'd rogues (or on green, mages) are everywhere, depreciating ranger dps. Mastery of warrior mechanics has trickled down to the commonfolk, or sparing that, most people know how to use utility (root) to manage agro, or go without tanks entirely, depreciating ranger tanking.

However, this is precisely one of the reasons why Green is so fucking lame. Armies of enchanters and mages everywhere you go, steamrolling everything. The game is figured out, the cheese is Kraft Singles® and it's widely available to every elf household. A ranger is a statement, a manifesto (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYecfV3ubP8), classic Everquest in its truest and purest form. An RPG, not a spreadsheet.

If the player doesn't know how to use those things to add value, then the class is pretty underwhelming, but at least provides non-negligible DPS.

All classes have a skill floor and a skill ceiling. Rangers have a low skill floor and a reasonably high skill ceiling. Even played at their best they are somewhat niche, but they excel in those niches. Otherwise they are just slightly shitty DPS.

If you judge classes based on their skill floor, then it is fair to call them a bad class. Given OP's communication skills and demeanor, I get the feeling they play mainly with unskilled players.

Using track to cherry-pick named from throughout the zone, using snare and root when pulling to stagger pulls so CC isn't necessary, tanking with knight agro and warrior-ish dps. Pre-45 they aren't that squishy and post-45 everything should be slowed anyway.

For raids, this is actually really useful, for 1) ripping / dirty tagging the raid target single from the train 2) building up aggro via weapon shield during a tank switch.

For leveling group content, they can just tank and not die.

Green criticism is potentially valid. Melee has issues in classic, and a lot of the things that make Rangers good came later. Verant realized bows were bad and made them about 8 times better over the course of Kunark and Velious (not even kidding, Rangers got double damage at 51, then a two minute duration more than double damage discipline, then their best easily obtainable 350 range bow/arrow combo went from 26/45 to 38/36). The result is that they go from awful to actually quite good.

On fights that last 1-2 mins or so Ranger can top DPS with Trueshot. Shorter fights Rogues and Wizards do better. Longer fights Rogues catch back up. That's kind of a niche fight length though since it means classic mob HP pool with a moderate raid size of 20-30.

They're also a top tier pvp class

To take what Zekayy said and expand, I've seen Rangers get in to speed bump while the next tank builds agro and the ranger ends up tanking well after weapon shield goes down.
