Looking for a cheap as chips laptop to get some p99 fix sorted. Literally just for eq, maybe thief 2, some classic pc games lol.
My issue is, all these modern cheap laptops don't have a dedicated gpu
Would say this run eq OK?

i would only assume that these can only do lite web browsing
there is a good possibility that these laptops will be at more than 50% cpu utilization from just the game and windows
here is some references for you
please compare the Theoretical Performance section, which is probably at 95% load, your machine wont be loaded that much

as a rule of thumb any processor label as atoms or celerons are all unable to run windows, a web browser, a video and everquest.
probably not windows and everquest

Eq is normally pretty happy running on CPU graphics from what I’ve seen. I think the dedicated graphics was a requirement of the classic client, not titanium?
Certainly my wife’s machine which has no gpu has ran it (64 bit 4GB ddr3). My own machine is 12GB with further 6GB dedicated, but can run eq without gpu when it wants to save power, even in tov on the recent quake.
I’ll try it on a intel atom with 2GB and see how that goes (I can only imagine badly).
4GB without dedicated should be fine for 15 year old games most of the time I imagine.

May be worth going for a second hand refurb off social media. See if they’ll whack a ssd in there for you. You can get 128GB of 6GB/s hard drive for 15 quid these days.

an idea would be to get a laptop without windows and install ubuntu or some other flavor of linux
that would extend the life of the laptop that doesnt have 4gb of ram

Just some food for thought. You can likely save some money buying a used or refurbished off Ebay. Such as the thinkpads.

Those would probably work, but I should mention that on an 8 year old laptop with an Intel i5 and integrated graphics can run EQ, but will lag almost to the point of being unplayable if there are more than 50 characters in close proximity. That's even after turning down clip plane and such.

I used to run WoW on a second gen acer netbook, back in like 2008. Ran it surprisingly well. Literally, a potato powered pc can run classic eq. Dont forget, it was coded in the era of 300mghz processors and 64mb vid cards.

I bought a Lenovo ThinkPad T440p 14" Gaming Laptop i5 2.6GHz 8GB 512GB SSD NVIDIA Backlit on ebay for like $250.00 shipped and thing runs like a dream. Plenty of power for EQ for sure. IF you decide to go with a purchase like this, you need to tweak EQ by downloading Nvidia software so that EQ does not run on integrated graphics but from the GPU.

This may be true for the release era client, but p1999 uses the titanium client from around 2006, which uses a much heavier graphics engine. I believe the dynamic lighting ‘fix’ on this server also uses some much more intensive direct x calculations than what the unmodified titanium client used.

Literally a potato could run this 20+ emulated server, honestly though OP if you want your BEST value for this, let me give you a good piece of advice. This game is coded where the GPU(graphics card) almost barely gets utilized, this is a SOLELY CPU (processor) related game. So for some good value try to look for laptops that have Ryzen 2nd gen or 3rd gen cpus. I could help you out, if you don't mind me asking what's your budget rougly ?

Barik, you may be correct with your statement that the game runs mostly on the processor but I will tell you that my graphics were enhanced considerably when I switched to the GPU and the performance seems smoother. Just my 2cents.

Oh for sure man, but if we're talking everquest it's almost exclusively a CPU intensive game. Ideally you don't want any bottlenecks on your daily driver whether its a laptop or desktop, given the examples he was showing, we're talking bottom of the barrel here so you have to pick and choose =( unless those links are reflecting his budget.
