View Full Version : Crashed while zoning, now Empty Server List forever

mattdementous

I crashed while zoning and now my server list is empty. I tried installing EQ on another PC and trying to sign in, and that PC has an empty server list also. I tried searching the forums for this issue and saw suggestions to use a VPN. I tried this and got the same results. I then tried to reinstall my game, same empty server list. Reboot, same issue.
Has this happened to anyone else? Just want to play everquest. Thanks.

Unfortunately, that program gives me missing dll errors when I run it.

EQ is very sensitive to dropped packets or those received out of order because it uses UDP (rather than TCP). You mentioned trying a VPN, which usually works as it helps counter any routing issues on your ISPs part. Power cycle any parts of your network you have access to, and if that doesn't help then unfortunately you're at the mercy of your ISP to realize there's a problem. Fortunately, when these issues do occur they are usually resolved within a week or two, so my best recommendation would be to keep trying and eventually you'll find it working again.

i will look into a better solution but compiling on windows is a project im not pursuing since i can compile on linux

I installed it on my windows and it didn't fix the issue. Same missing DLL files. I have not installed the gcc addon, as I unfortunately don't know how to do that.

Yeah this happens all the time because the login server process has no dropped packet protection.

Usually you just reboot and wait. For me personally it takes a couple of minutes, once it took like half an hour.

As you can see this is a common issue:

https://www.google.com/search?q=eq+emulator+server+list+empty

Good luck on finding your solution, hopefully it's just some more waiting.

It runs now, but it's just a blank command prompt. I left it running and tried logging into everquest, but I have the same empty server list as before.

Unfortunately, waiting doesn't seem to fix it. I tried waiting several hours and even a day. Same result. If the issue isn't somehow on my end, I hope it gets fixed so everyone can enjoy the game.

did you happen to read the part about changing your eqhosts?
it's on the website for the program

EQEmu Login Helper

Clientside workaround for the lack of out-of-order packet handling in the public EQEmu loginserver.
Usage

Change the Host eqhost.txt to localhost:5998 or localhost:5999
Start eqemu-login-helper and keep it running in the background
Login as normal

xaix1999
09-26-2020, 08:03 PM
after this you will always need to run the login helper to login

mattdementous
09-26-2020, 08:07 PM
I did make that change. I launched the program, allowed it through my firewall, and launched EQ. Same blank server list. The program is just a command prompt with no text, just blank. Is that how it's meant to look?

xaix1999
09-26-2020, 08:09 PM
sometimes I've noticed it can take 30 seconds to fix the server list for me
if it's still blank i just exit and login again after waiting 10 seconds

Sadly after waiting between launching and running multiple times, it still shows up blank. Thank you for trying so hard to help me. I wish it would work. This issue started up only recently. It has worked perfectly before.

09-26-2020, 08:41 PM
what did you change your eqhost to?

mattdementous
09-26-2020, 08:53 PM
localhost:5998. When that didn't work, I changed it to 5999. Still didn't work. So I went back to 5998 and tried the waiting thing. Still didn't work, unfortunately.

xaix1999

5998 is for older clients aka titanium
5999 is for new clients aka after titanium

can you look at the troubleshooting faq and use the system info table to give us some info about the space potatoes you use to power your eq?
that way we can get some background info

Windows 10 64-bit (Also tried Debian and Ubuntu)
Processor: i7-4720HQ
motherboard: Razer Blade 14 gaming laptop.
videocard: GTX 970M
network adapter: WiFi. Not sure of exact wifi card manufacturer put in, but likely not relevant as game worked perfectly in the past.
Your ISP: Charter/Spectrum (Georgia, USA)
The model of your router/modem: Modem is Spectrum branded. Router is a run of the mill netgear.
No weird network setup or anything. Have tried with and without PrivateInternetAccess VPN on, same results. Have tried plugged in via ethernet insteaad of wifi, issue persists.
Have even tried at a different network (someone else's house) that uses the same ISP. Same issue.
I've reinstalled dozens of times. Installed titanium, pasted the current P99 files over, etc.
Universe doesn't want me to play classic everquest and I just refuse to take a hint.

xaix1999
10-10-2020, 01:34 PM
i see your problem, you are using a razer laptop, lol just kidding

if you use debian or ubuntu, the linux login helper is 99% working

check if you modem and router need a power cycle
and also check your router for dropped packets in your firewall ruleset if you have one
firewall might be a windows thing
im sure iptables doesnt block p99 (debian or ubuntu)

mattdementous
10-10-2020, 01:52 PM
I tried it with my firewall completely off as a troubleshooting step and it didn't work.
I rebooted my router and modem multiple times and tried a different wifi network at a different location.
The only constant I can think of is the ISP and I guess my account, but I was never banned. I barely played. I've even used multiple computers to test and still the same issue.

Get unknown error at login.
If I can get past the login, then the server list is empty.
If I manage to get the server list, then I get an unknown error when connecting to server.
If I manage to connect to server, then I crash when logging into the toon.
If I manage to log in to the toon, then I crash next time I zone.

Too many steps with crash risk - feels like I have to keep flipping a coin till I get 5 heads in a row and otherwise it won’t work.
Getting stuck at any of these steps sends me back to the 1st step. Then, I have to get past all of them again. Last night it took me half an hour to get from East Commons to Befallen – and I had SoW.

Running the game in Admin mode, in compatibility mode does not help.

xaix1999

since you got a laptop take it to a public WiFi like star bucks and test your install

Sroka

Now its telling me that I have an active character on the server and have to wait for the synchronization.
I have never even gotten as far to the Character Selection screen today, how come my toon is on?
The game is difficult enough, logging in shouldn't be. For now, I will find a better hobby for my free time because this is no longer affordable for me.

mattdementous

Unfortunately I can't test this as my laptop is tied to its power adapter. The battery died long ago. I'd go in a plug it in, but with the current plague, I'd prefer not to risk my life for everquest (as much as I love it).

can you use your cell phone's internet?

mattdementous
10-11-2020, 07:28 PM
I created a mobile Hotspot and tested. Same issue. So it's not an ISP issue. It must be an account issue I guess? I have no issues logging in on the forums obviously. I tried creating a different account. Logging in to the forums works but signing into the game tells me my password is wrong.

mattdementous
10-12-2020, 10:46 PM
Blank server list. I have no idea what could be causing this as just a few months ago it all worked perfectly. I appreciate you taking so much time to try and help me though. I know it's a pretty perplexing puzzle--- I just hope a solution exists because what I did play, I truly enjoyed.

xaix1999

so this is a common problem with tcp packets being out of order
windows tries to fix this for programs so the programs don't
on Linux (which i use) there is libraries that most modern programs use that handle this for us
titanium client doesn't use either of these while on Linux/Wine
so i use the p99 man in the middle daemon for the login issue
more specifically the blank server list
when i tried to play with friends most of the one hour we had together i was still logging in
took me about 20-40 minutes depending on my luck
the p99 login helper for windows, on the wiki technical page has this program for you
it has requirements, such as cygwin dlls that must be copied over to the login helper folder
chances are you are having an issue with windows and the tcp packets being out of order
by this i mean

tcp has a built in system of repeating packets the client says it didn't get
1 then 3 then 5 are received and the client says repeat 2 and 4
part of the tcp network portion of your network stack re orders then for you
then you have 1 2 3 4 5
since titanium client isn't modern it's more than likely looking for older network stack protocols that will give it the info it wants, like what the order the packets are in that it is receiving
so instead it's dropping packets since it's getting invalid data
invalid data for it's time, recent games wouldnt see it as invalid data

I tried with Linux multiple times on multiple distros on multiple computers and networks and the blank server list persists. I also tried the login helper on windows.

on Linux did you use the p99-mimd?

mattdementous
10-15-2020, 10:20 AM
I get error 3 every time I try to run it.

mattdementous
10-15-2020, 11:27 AM
For whatever reason, I'm unable to edit my previous reply but I managed to get mimd to work. I see the server list. However, when I select Green and attempt to get to the character select screen, the game freezes and after a while, it takes me back to the login screen. It does this consistently.

woah progress

xaix1999
10-15-2020, 12:57 PM
next will likely be a resolution or ui issues
try removing the loading screen and keep the same resolution

LoadScreenMode=1
SameResolution=1

mattdementous
10-15-2020, 05:31 PM
SameResolution was already 1 in eqclient.ini, but LoadScreenMode wasn't so I set it to 1 and saved. I then tried again. Unfortunately, same issue. After a few tries, I can get to server select, but when I double click my server or click Play Everquest, it freezes up (as if loading or something) and then kicks me back to the login screen after a short time.

xaix1999
11-07-2020, 04:59 PM
so are you on linux or windows?
if you are on linux i would suggest not using directx and using mesa+dxvk for your wine graphics as thats all im using with no problems in any zones
with linux you will need p99-mimd, on the wiki there is a startup script with p99-mimd running in the background before the p99 client starts and then closes after the p99 client closes. auto start and close only while running the p99 client.

mattdementous
11-07-2020, 05:13 PM
Both. Neither work. As for the workaround, we tried the mimd already. It fixed the initial issue from this thread's first post but lead to the issue mentioned above unfortunately.

have you ran a chkdsk or fsck?

on Linux what version of wine are you using? direct x or dxvk?
on windows what version of direct x are you using?

what Linux distribution are you using?

mattdementous

Debian and Ubuntu present the same issues as windows. I tried direct x and dxvk. Same issues. On windows I'm using the most recent. Ran both commands. Looks good. I'm at my wit's end. I had hoped the issue would go away after a month but no such luck.

Uh oh, I just crashed from a death and now I'm having this problem. Frequent "a connection to the server could not be reached" and then empty server list if it goes through. Hopefully it's just because there's a lot of people logged in atm.

Edit: Some people in Discord confirming the same thing now so I think it's a login server issue atm and probably not related to the OP's problem.

Sometimes the fast connect button can help you bypass the no servers listed. I used to have this problem on and off. I would strongly suggest just try to keep re-loggin or even try to login from another ISP, like go to Mcdonalds an try their WIFI. There is some extra code they put in to stop exploits, but I believe that extra code also prevents legit login sometimes as well. When i tried an new ISP an logged in it seemed to fix it everytime. Like my info thru my ISP was being used to block my account for some reason.
One the things that seem to help me sometimes-
Go to the command window do this-
cmd
command: ipconfig /flushdns
