They sell the whole account and (should) relinquish access to it. They don't transfer the character off their account.

since there's no subscription fee to pay for accounts i think people just use multiple accounts with maybe just 1 or 2 toons on each account? that way they can sell or trade a whole account but still keep their other toons. i would think that's how it's done anyway. i haven't tried setting up multiple accounts so i'm not sure how it's done (should probably look into that).

Aye, you can create up to 3 login server accounts per EQ EMU login, and those LS accounts be transfered to other EQEMU accounts.
