Hi everyone. Would first like to say hello, and a big thank you to the Devs for making this server possible. Like many, my favorite gaming days were early EQ, and I hope this server brings back some of those fun times.

Reason for the post, as the title suggests, is I'm curious what classes might be needed out there. With a low population, I'd like to make a class that will benefit the server -> guild -> group.

I've been told shamans, monks, and wizards are the 3 in pretty high demand? Any thoughts would be appreciated, and have a great day!

Since it isn't quick to level in the game, so I would pick something you like to play rather than something you think is "needed." If you enjoy playing a cleric, shaman, monk, or wizard, then fine. If you like playing a mage or necro (two of the "overplayed" classes), then I would suggest you play them even if you are a dime a dozen.

Good advice. Tough choices.

Keeping entire Frenzy camps locked down as an Enchanter, as the group chain killed was a thrill. Tanking huge fights around Lord trying to keep all the squishies alive was equally a rush. Riding that aggro line as a wizard, putting out as much DPS as possible was also a lot of fun. :)

I'm leaning towards Wizard, but haven't made the choice yet!

Yea. this is a good topic.

Myself and 2 others are just starting out. And im torn between what class to play. I played a Wiz up to 70 back in the day, and loved it........... but have been torn, and always wanted to play a necro........ what would make a Uber 3 or 4 person team at this point in progression of the server >?

I'd think for experience grinding, the holy trinity can't be beat if you have the friends to pull it off.

Warrior, Cleric, Enchanter/Monk, DPS, DPS, DPS.

amirite?

The server is still short on tanks I believe which you mentioned enjoying.

Wizards are definitely the least common int caster class to my knowledge.

Hybrid penalties are set to classic levels so although rangers are rare, they are also much harder to level than most other classes currently (but don't believe the hype about them being completely gimped).

If you are looking at the healing route, shaman are definitely the rarest of the three with druids by far being the most common.

I would say the rarest races are currently Trolls, possibly followed by Erudites, Half Elves and Gnomes.

I don't tend to see too many rogues around but I can't confirm that they are uncommon (especially since they are an easy class for a level 50 to twink).

Hope this info helps. Play what you like!

That's all I needed to hear. I was for sure thinking most MTs, and tanks were pretty set, and by playing a Warrior would be an effort in futility.

Thanks for the input!

With a mage and a war, you want to be a healer class.

You could always do both.
Necro on off hours when groups are hard to come by.
Wiz when the population is maxed out and people are looking for DPS.
Also, in my opinion necro is less dependent on gear to solo than a wiz so it would be able to survive on the Wizard's hand-me-downs.

You might think this would seriously slow down your ability to lvl up but any time you sit around waiting an hour for a group you could have made a yellow or three soloing with an alt. I tend to play a solo class while sending LFG OOC messages for the other class. Trust me, this works!

Really the only answer is play what you think will be the most enjoyable to you. I would have never made it to 50 if I were forced into a class I didn't truly want to play.

Edit: Also, don't be afraid to experiment. There is no rush to level and I'll bet you'll enjoy the journey from 1 to 49 more than you will being 50. Gear is easy enough to transfer from character to character so if you get a good drop and decide to change classes you won't lose anything. My character select screen has my 50, a 25 shaman, and then 6 or 7 level 10 characters of various classes I experimented with.

No one is going to give you grief for playing an 'overpopulated' class, so just have fun.

The biggest problem now is going to be remembering where all the sweet group spots are.

Do people in their 20s still group down in Highkeep killing goblins?

yea no doubt.......... i need to think hard and remember all the tricks, and spots i used to go.

Im thinking im gona go WiZ........ its what i know, and im good at it. and ill do a Necro on the side. heh.

My only rush is that I really really want to get a Guise. It's my favorite item in the game, ever. :)

^This best sums it up, imo. The server when levelling is generally pretty cool. Even overpopulated classes find groups or do well soloing (seeing this is a lot of the reason some classes are generally over populated here that I've seen).

Necros, Druids, Mages, Enchantes are the most played right now in that order. I take a check about every day. During certain periods of the day.

Shaman/Rogues/Shadowknights/Warriors/Clerics.......paladins........bards/..........rangers

Are whats played next on this server in that order.

Unfortunatly the 2 basic core classes needed are the ones that hold a group together? Who knew, so you have alot of people doing nothing in between due to the lack of classes to get shit done. Even though IMHO here shadownknights are a better tanks. Due to disease could having correct in line Aggro control. Wich is toned down later in kunark and peaks again wtih pallys in velious.

Overall a good war can still tank fine, and dominate in planes due to higher hp and tanking abilities. But shit ive seen bards tanks gods before.

Play what you want but dont qq in your head when you look like everyone else. If you wanna stand out? Play a female dwarf Rogue. Or an erudin cleric or ogre monk. You get what i mean.

Hey all, found this thread useful. I'm thinking of rolling up on this server as well and read through this looking for advice.

I played EQ back in the day, starting before Kunark, taking a break until Velious and playing though until WoW stole my soul. I had a level 65? Paladin on Lanys T'Vyl which I enjoyed playing, as well as a 65 Wizard. I've played just about every class at the group and raid level, but only a few different classes in "Classic" EQ and only into the teens.

I don't know how long I intend on playing, or if I intend on ever making it to 50, seeing velious again, etc - but like many of you, I'm nostalgic of this whole period of the game and not much afterwards. Which is funny because I didn't join a top guild until much later, towards the end of PoP.

So, with all that said, I'm pretty sure I don't want to play a Paladin again much as I enjoyed it. I liked playing Bard (even if I was usually just one-hand boxing it during raids), and from reading this thread Bard seems like a good idea because it's needed and I remember it being a highly useful class when played well. My question, then, is: why aren't Bards being played? Difficulty or were they just not as useful in Classic EQ? Or are they just uninteresting to people?

I suppose Bard has always been one of those classes that fewer people played, I'm just curious if I'm missing something here. Thanks in advance.

If I had to guess, you are partly correct.

Bards are just not everyone's idea of a good time. Also, there is a "bug" right now that makes it a little tougher to twist your songs. There's a delay issue, and so for some it's annoying enough to say f it and play something else.

Pretty much, yes. They're subpar tanks and subpar DPS compared to other classes. So where does that leave them?

Pretty fucking dope once they stop being noobs without mistwalkers.
