If you don't night time is pretty much unplayable.

I get a black screen and go play something else.

Not trolling, serious question: is gamma adjustment not possible to partially overcome this?

Old school trick, still works.

Night vision pretty bad for humans and barbs and erudites. That is classic.

Dynamic lighting engaged is the drawback and makes the crunchy game a bit crunchier so its a little rough.

Solution- if you play a night-blind race, make sure to be a class that has a vision buff. My barb shammy has cast Serpent Sight on himself many many many times.

It's a good idea.

Or reroll as the best race in the game (Dark elf) for less squinting <3

Depends on what part of the night you're trying to overcome. Raising gamma will help during twilight hours. It won't help with the darkest part of the night. During the middle of the game night, from roughly 9 PM to 3 AM game time, P99's newly-adopted (as of 2019) custom night rendering system places a series of black shaders around the human characters outside the radius of light sources. This custom shader is specifically intended to present the use of gamma alteration to bypass its effect. Raiding gamma during those hours will simply turn a black shader cloak into a washed out grey shader cloak; stuff obscured by the cloak still won't render.

However, there are ways of mitigating this effect.

First, use a light source. I am routinely shocked by the large number of newbies (and even a few longtime players) who seem oblivious to the existence of light sources. With something as simple and easily-obtained as a store-bought lantern the game remains at least playable (if sometimes dangerous) during all night hours.

Second, maximize your draw distance in options. As a side effect of how the night shaders are implemented, increasing draw distance will also increase the effective radius of light sources.

Third, use vision spells. Numerous classes get these spells, which some guides regard as "useless" and some players don't buy. This ranges from the Shaman's Serpent Sight spell to the Necromancer or Shadow Knight's Deadeye, and everything in between. As soon as you have at least Infravision, the mid-night black shaders no longer activate and dark never gets darker than twilight hours.

Fourth, worn vision items like Glowing Stone Band are available as well for classes like Clerics and Paladins who don't have their own vision spells.

Sadly, the night vision is still not completely classic. Infravision should at least make the mobs a faint red in the dark and light sources should do better to make the immediate surroundings visible. I remember in 1999, a GLS made you feel safe at night. It doesn't do a whole lot on a hacked Titanium client.

Raising gamma on your actual graphics card ex: NVIDA control panel, will negate the darkness
