How long before the price drops? Will it drop? Will it drop harder than the towers?

my own prediction is lumber will continue to rise for a short while, then plateau and fall back down.
People need/want homes and the housing market is driving the price up right now.

It's almost the highest it's ever been, it's very crazy.

Another one worth talking about is oil, invest in oil right now and you can easily double your money over the next 3 years.

And it goes without saying,. every single year heating oil turns a profit in the winter, if invested into during the summer.

Lumber? How bout steel??? I can't even build a home gym right now, can't find a complete set of weights from any manufacturer. It's kind of crazy. Got assholes on facebook trying to sell trashy mismatched incomplete sets at $2/lb. If anyone knows a site that sells full sets of cast-iron or steel olympic plates(45/35/25/10/5/2.5) and are in stock let me know!

Haha Im sure shortages in lumber steel isnt a sign of anything to come, this is just regular market ups and downs, there's a busy market out there with all the shutins and pandemic so surely this run on wood/steel isnt a sign. People are buying homes because they're all working so much right now lol

lol I could be wrong but I swear to god I think we're doomed lol

The big issue causing supply shortages of EVERYTHING is our response to covid. Manufacturers of whatever supply had their inventory levels depleted with lockdowns. Now Covid social distancing and shutdowns whenever there is a positive test on site is killing their ability to catch up.

Working in supply chain management, I can tell you quite certainly, that anyone moving expirable product saw considerable losses due to inventory aging past the expiration date, while movement of said inventory was reduced by as much as 90 to 100% throughout the past year under all of these lockdown restrictions.

As such, with things slowly reopening amidst the propaganda of "second waves" no one is willing to undertake the risk of bringing their inventory operations back up to pre-covid levels. The risks are too high with incompetent government handling, constant fear-mongering, and political grandstanding continueing throughout this whole fiasco with an implicit threat to put us back under lockdown restrictions.

As a new homeowner who wants to do some renovations... what a silly time to buy a house! Guess I'm waiting to do any major lumber-related work. Apparently prices are 3-4x what they normally are.

I wear a sweatshirt from a Baltimore lumber company I'm not affiliated with. My friend may have been. It was his. I dunno. It's a nice oversized hoodie. I'm for wood overall. Splinters fucking suck though.

Nah. Weyerhaeuser still has considerable natural resource holdings throughout the PNW despite BLM/Antifa's deliberate forest fires last year. A lot of what is still being harvested is being shipped overseas while intentional scarcity is maintained within the US to both extract a higher premium on the lumber itself, and hedge against intrinsic lockdown risks which would threaten to age said lumber past it's expiry. Believe it or not, wood is an expirable product, and no one wants to see millions of dollars in inventory loss two years in a row, so the wood they have had to sit on for the past year has higher carrying costs due to it occupying warehousing space for a longer period of time than what had been the "normal" precovid, and the hiking of price is used to offset those increased carrying costs.

As they say: "there is no free lunch" and no one is selling product for below cost; price being a function of cost, of course.

Everyone should've just told the government to fuck themselves when the can was kicked past "flattening the curve" to outright "elimination" to "until the vaccine" to "until 90% have taken the vaccine".

All the shut it all down "if you would just wear the mask" and vote in a geriatric retard enthusiasts deserve this. Wait till the fed has to announce the inflation numbers by the end of year ;)

To circle back onto the forest fires debacle, it's a well known fact that a forest fire is necessary to activate the germination of the sitka spruce seed bank, in a few years when the forests recover from your antics, they'll have more suitable lumber than they had before, and at a lesser cost, because setting up a controlled burn in PNW is helluva lot more expensive then wantonly burning the forest down in an uncontrolled manner

Probably a pretty solid long term investment with the inventory bloom they have on the 5 to 10-year horizon.

though I would agree with you, why does covid create a shortage in housing and reccord housing prices and a V shaped recovery 2 months into a 1 year shut in? I guess if the low interest rates are why.

So I suppose this is the state of the union: a bunch of rich people holding bags of money think because of interest rates now is a good time to buy a new home..

..meanwhile we're circling the greatest unemployment numbers in since the depression and a min wage everyone has been saying was too low to live on for the last 20 years and a horizon of hyperinflation.

I hope I am wrong because I'm just a cog in this machine, but the future sure seems suspect to me :o

the fed lies about inflation

in my life I saw jobs pay the same (actually much less thanks to all the student loans) as the price of lunch went up 20$ unless you eat fast food, and then its 8-12 dollars depending on your state.

the road map to the future lookn to me like:

A lot of people on here are in denial about the fact that I was a lumberjack up until the pandemic. I did more climbing than tree-felling because climbers are more rare, so you might have 3 climbers, and 15 regular loggers, so I spent less time actually on the ground so to speak.

But I used to love custom painting the company chainsaws to keep other crews from stealing them off of our trucks. I got pretty good at it too NGL.

Fucking lumber prices are dumb. The demand has been low for months and now people are like "i dont care if i die from covid" and everything it starting back up. Months will pass before the loggers catch up with the home depot shelf.

Not to derail the thread but I was laughing at how today I was out and saw crowds of people not wearing masks, everyone, like, in any visible direction at every store and restaurant I could see were people without masks

And I remembered that exactly right now last year, where I was reading about how europe was starting to shut down because of surges in covid and our stores were just like they are today and then we shut down.

And that's what i am reading this year :p

If you're investing in the future I suggest investing in what you would have before the shut in's last time lol

Its so serious though. They dont post the number every day anymore, but 1000 people are still dying, every single day, from covid. Nobody gives a shit. I wish there was a way to make a legally binding bet. If you die from covid, I get all your stuff. If I die from the vaccine, you get all mine.

You make a good point. The CDC director was talking about doomsday and shit. Shes "really scared" for the future because americans are just so fucking stubborn and willfully ignorant. Fucking retarded shit.
