View Full Version : Should lower level mobs be gating?

Can't tell if I'm going crazy or not, I have more recently been playing on green, but I've been back on Blue and have noticed mobs gating in places like Upper Guk and Mistmoore, is this supposed to be the case? Has it always been like this? I can't recall mobs gating in these zones in all my time on P99, they certainly haven't been on green.

This is happening on Green too; I think it started roughly around Green's Kunark release.

I have never seen lower level mobs (in the 20's) gate until pretty recently. On green, we spent a huge amount of time in Guk killing shamans pre-kunark and not once did we experience a gate. I've leveled a lot of characters in the 20-30 range since 2013 in guk / mistmoore and never experienced gates until now.

Here's some logs of it happening:

[Fri Apr 09 18:51:22 2021] a froglok ton shaman begins to cast the gate spell.

[Fri Apr 09 22:48:33 2021] a froglok shin shaman begins to cast the gate spell.

[Sat Apr 17 03:19:52 2021] a pledge familiar begins to cast the gate spell.

[Fri Apr 23 02:07:05 2021] a froglok vis shaman begins to cast the gate spell.

[Fri Apr 23 07:59:04 2021] a froglok vis shaman begins to cast the gate spell.

This can't be right, can it? Gating was always a higher level mob thing, the first i remember seeing it was in Hate / Sebilis and never while leveling up. I googled every instance of Froglok, Guk, Vis, Shin, Shaman, mistmoore, Gate that I could and found nobody ever discussing this, i copy/pasted the log to google and that phrase "a froglok x shaman begins to cast the gate spell" had never been posted online anywhere. Would love to know if its a bug or intended.

Even some of the lower level lizard casters in Ferrott were gating and they are likely below the level those classes even get gate.

When it comes to "keeping it classic", Nilbog has a known bias towards things that make the game harder (for players) over things that make it easier.

As a simple example, when he discovered that there was a single quest that gave a bit too much XP (and had already been doing so for a decade on Blue) he immediately disabled quest experience for all quests, on both servers, for a month! I can only speculate, but I think his logic was that "helpful bugs" let people "cheat to get ahead", and so he reacts right away to any such bugs, to keep a level playing field.

But for something like this I don't think he feels any pressure to fix it soon, which explains why it has been going on for well over a month, with no response ... even though the code fix should be pretty trivial (it amounts to adding "if (mob.level < GATING_LEVEL) return" to the mob-gate-casting code).

What I'm trying to say is this likely will get fixed at some point, because it is unclassic ... but I wouldn't expect it soon, because it's not helping anyone (and therefore is lower priority).

It's helping people who use shields to bash mobs sooner! And more frequently.

Everyone is well aware this isn't classic. I thought I recall some staff member responding that it's not intended and due to be fixed. There are a lot of changes/fixes waiting on stand-by. P1999 hasn't had a patch in quite awhile.

It happened with the last patch I believe.

Found this thread after searching a bit from about 5 months ago - https://www.project1999.com/forums/showthread.php?p=3209583

So yeah, guess it just hasn't been fixed yet

Good find. There has not to my knowledge been a patch since then, hence presumably it's still pending.

P99 = min(classic, player_advantage)

If someone was stabbing me with a rusty dagger and I had the magician ability to gate, wouldn't you? Don't be selfish.
