View Full Version : Most of you are too young to remember this, but in classic EverQuest

You couldn’t see what other players in your group looted. The first time I had a “serious” group this person kept saying “MT” after each mob he looted and I asked what that meant and learned it meant “empty” (em tee).

Someone on our server went on a PoH raid and then the next day he was suddenly wearing a bunch of planar gear that he didn’t have the day before and that he hadn’t been awarded during said raid, and it caused a major backlash from the community. It was also learned that he had ninja looted items he couldn’t even equip.

You also used to be able to loot other players’ corpses when they consented you, and bind other players wherever you wanted.

The game stayed this way until Dire Charm came out in PoP.

Everquest had been in development for years when Ultima Online released. I feel like a lot of people didn’t know that.

haha.. similar influences and it was talked about by the developers in their time. PVP being an afterthought in EQ is a result of that.

In development for years doesn't mean what it means today, a decade. We are talking about couple years back in the 90s.

well problem now is p99 using the titanium client which uses 10 expansions and modern ui and other stuff like the Mouse wheel zoom in or out not classic but part of the client the disc window not classic wasnt introduced until 2004 with GoD expansion and its proven too on these forums p99 needs to use another client that is more classic.

yeah Ill be honest, when I first logged into P99 green I was confused by the UI... the way it was marketed to me by my friends it was going to be the crazy old UI that took up half the screen. I remember not being able to use mouse-look to see my surroundings in the game, which meant finding a really safe place to meditate was more critical. On p99 you are super zoomed out and can see roaming mobs coming your way for miles...

When I was a kid playing this game, I was really bad thief... it's embarrassing to admit this now because I couldn't even steal a dollar off of someone without feeling immense guilt.

But I remember a wood elf ranger needed me to show him something in Ak'Anon, and I tricked him into following me to the Necromancer guild because I knew they would kill him.. then I tricked him to consent me, and stole his stuff... I was doing this type of thing so frequently that I ended up getting banned from the game, and having to buy another copy of the game...

I like to think by the time I finally got some decent characters rolling that my thieving ways were mostly gone, but I do distinctly remember that there was as PUG raid on Woushi and since I was an epic rogue I knew I could out DPS any group, and literally didnt join a group so I would get the kill and then when I looted I took a Crescent Blades of Luclin and pretended like it didnt drop... and constantly stealing gems with pick pocket and them adamantly denying having done it when the Cleric who was our normal master looter was noticing discrepancies with the amount of loot they get when I was or wasn't in the group...

Did a bunch of other thieving stuff too.. like there didn't used to be a box that asked you if you wanted to drop an item to the ground, so we would ask to see an item in trade box since you couldn't link items back then, and when we saw the person take the item off we assume a second later he would put it in the trade box and then we would move really fast, the person would drop the item, and we would take it and become rich.. got so many oracle robes this way... before it became such a problem they patched it to where you don't just drop stuff on the ground without being asked first...

also remember tricking a warrior into a duel so i could disarm him and steal his executioner axe (it used to fall on the ground)..
for those of you who dont know, executioner axe was a BIG DEAL 20 years ago... like level 50 warriors on my server actually dreamed about getting one in the early days of EQ...

The hotkey for auto attack was set as a default to "Z" in Beta phase 3. It was either in beta 4 or during launch that it was changed to "A". I've always set it back to Z as that is how it was for me when I first played the game.

Also, from launch up till about I'm guessing 4 or 5 months in did you know that the Short Sword of the Ykesha had a different look? It wasn't that lame looking kukri type knife that you all know now, it was much different and cooler looking. But for the life of me I cannot find any screenshots of what it used to look like. Anyone remember this and/or able to find the old look of it?

I forgot about that until you just now mentioned it... although admittedly... I don't know if I ever saw it, or if I did see it... if I had any idea what I was looking at.. I remember thinking it was so cool the first time I saw one.. but wanting the EBW even more... at that time on Tunare, people considered EBW more valuable than SSOY... ironically the EBW is so much more cheap when green launched, I guess because literally anyone could solo camp fangs in 2020...

I would like to see original SSOY though.. going to check google and see if I find anything

yeah except ya know, on p99 i constantly gave away items, power leveled strangers, traveled great distances to resurrect people

i play clerics on this game because i genuinely like to be able to help other people enjoy this game
i know how bad it sucks to want to do a dungeon and theres never any healer around.. i get more enjoyment out sitting in a zone like mistmoore or unrest healing a group than i could ever get out of looting any item in this game and i mean that..

feels so good when you come across a random corpse out in the world, realize the person is online and toss them a rez.. or giving a random new player a cool item or PLing strangers..

helping other players is the most rewarding thing for me... and this is why i will be maining a cleric on mischief/thornblade

One of the big reasons classic EQ back then was different from our experience today on P99 is the hardware differences.

I think most of the people ran EQ in 800x600 back then, some probably did 640x480 because their 3D card was just too bad. 15" CRT was the norm, 17" was not really maintstream yet IIRC.

Most were using 28, 33, or 56kbps dialup. Some people played on 14,4 modems (I did), no doubt some played on 9600 or whatever. Today kids dont even know what I'm talking about. Basically uphill both ways in a snow storm.

15 FPS was a great framerate for EQ, in some Kunark outdoor zones with all the shitty trees, it often dropped down to like 3 FPS, if that.

Also we had no wiki (but had everlore, allakhazam and such).

For some reason, nonwithstanding said difficulties, we still were all playing like crazies, raids of 80+ people were no problem, all mobs always died.

but you also couldnt really access any of that in game... i personally never wanted to log off to look anything up because of how slow the game loaded lol..

also a lot of false information existed on the internet back then.. i remember when I was camping a Cazic Quill in the Karanas.. for weeks.. now... I think there's no evidence to suggest that that item has ever dropped in the Karanas, but it was toted as fact on thesafehouse back in the day.

Also I think this is relevant,

Today its free, can be played on a 15 year old pawn shop laptop.. or if you are skilled, on a tablet-like device. There are no monthly fees, everything is figured out. The real thrill of cutting edge 3D worlds and the advancement of online play is diminished as every kid that is 20 years old today has never known a world without high-speed internet.

I don't have auto-attack bound, a carry over from one too many new-guy mistakes back in the day. I manual click everything.

I manual twisted as a bard as well. No hotkeys. I was a darn good bard on the technical side but lacked in creativity, specifically in regards to upper end raiding.

its sad that other servers like TAKP are more classic than this server.

There are things about TLP that are more classic than P99 is...

like when I first came to P99 I remembered leveling in outdoor zones 20 years ago.. I rushed to Lake of Ill Omen excited to see if I remembered the lay out of the Sarnak Fort... only to discover I was the only person in the zone.. same thing with OverThere and Dreadlands..

on TLP leveling in outdoor zones is actually the norm since a lot of them have good ZEMs and there is an unlimited amount of mobs for groups to pull.

I also remember raiding every single day/night 20 years ago. I was on Tunare, where there wasn't really a need for raiding guild, and all content was PUG'd, and I loved being able to log in whenever I wanted to and get a raid.

This was one of my complaints about WoW. Having to conform to a raid schedule instead of just logging in and playing at your own pace.. when I came to P99 I quickly realized that because of the UN or whatever, most people cannot just raid every single day or at their own pace. Most people are lucky to get to raid 1-2 days a week, if that.

On TLP this is not the case. You can find a pick up raid all hours of the day and night.

Feels a lot more like the game I remember in that regard.

I ended up in the ocean a few times myself.. I think one time I just randomly fell through the boat, and the other few times I got the bright idea to just start swimming...

Each time I remember being absolutely terrified that a giant shark or sea creature was going to eat me.. which actually did happen in Kunark. Hellacious fucking CR. After hours of swimming, found my corpse only to get eaten again.
