View Full Version : Why not a monthly open raid event for the server?

Probably going to get dumped on for suggesting this but I think it would be pretty awesome. It would be a good thing for the server overall and open up content to many folks who otherwise would never have the opportunity.
Could have something like, during a Saturday of the last week of each month, have a targeted quake for a specific raid zone separate from the main scene. The zone that gets targeted would be announced a day in advance. A GM would host the raid for that day and anyone meeting the minimum level requirement can join in. Griefing would be stamped out and punished. Loot would be an open roll and once the raid is cleared, everything goes back to normal for the guilds involved in the main scene until the next month.
It would just make things feel more inclusive, and a lot less oppressive and depressing for those not lucky enough to be in the top guilds. If P99 is supposed to be a museum, this would be a museum everyone can buy tickets for and enter.
I just think it would be cool, that's all.

All raids should be Open.
Sorry but me and the boys who created our own test server to "race" over 1500+ times for different mobs don't really think this is fair. We made sacrifices, quit our jobs, moved back into our parents basements to become professional EverQuest players and now every amateur feels entitled to what we earned? Not everyone can be a winner sorry.

Why does it have to be like that though? I just want to see what Dragon Necropolis and Plane of Hate looks like before I die and maybe have the opportunity to earn something that can't just be bought in the EC tunnel. I don't think I'm asking for the world here.

You need friends to go further than the entrances of those places, not to mention a willing wizard for the former. Probably even the latter too because of siren's grotto.
In many ways, yes I am new to the game. The only dungeons I am confident in are crushbone and blackburrow. I only came close to reaching endgame levels once but gave up because I couldn't find groups as a wizard.

They don't seem to, though. The last guild I was in straight up said it wasn't going to do it or PoSky anymore for a long time if ever again, when Velious hit, just as I finally reached plane eligible levels.

What do I do if they don't invite me though? That's the whole crux of all of this, you can want to raid all you want and be willing to work hard but you're still at the mercy of the top guilds being willing to even invite you or not. Having a monthly open raid will give folks the opportunity even when guild politics don't work out.

Tunabros is completely right. They are not selective. No guild is particularly selective about inviting. I think the main requirement for joining any guild is behaving in a friendly manner and not embarrassing the guild with public faux pas, uninvited political discussion, or emotional outbursts out of proportion to the matters at hand.
I think you can get an invite to any guild and just follow their rules to avoid being kicked out.
Some guilds, including ST, do require you to meet certain requirements to actually get raid loot, however. Raid attendance rate might be part of that.
As for my guild, <Castle> still raids PoFear and PoHate once a week. We also do Velious content. And DN isn't really a raid zone; more of a zone for 60s to group in.

Maybe things are different now. Maybe I'm just scarred by my experiences way back in the day, with early live EQ / WoW, where I'd attempt to join guilds that looked cool only to be turned away. Even happened once in real life when a guild on my server had a meetup/barbecue in the park. I'm just used to guilds being extremely selective and elitist toward those that aren't already a part of their circles. It's just really depressing and I have still yet to find a good home.
Can promise that I've never done any of what you mentioned, nor do I have any intention to. I'm just not the most socially adept person I suppose and I struggle to make meaningful connections with people.
But yup, as I said we'll see how it goes.

Because at the time I thought they were cool folks, for one reason or another. I'd see them doing neat and fun things, like doing awesome in-game stuff or hosting RL events, so I'd speak up and ask them to join. I figured spending the day with them, having park fun and building a face to face in-person rapport would have gotten me considered for an invite once we got back to our computers.
(For the record, this wasn't a hardcore guild or anything, just a random group of folks on the Solusek Ro server that happened to live closeby enough to hold a RL event like that)
Younger me was more outspoken and enthusiastic about that sort of thing. Older me struggles to come out of the protective shell it built around itself as a result of all that rejection, and just wishes there was a way to play the game without being reliant on having the exact correct connections on the server.

I got invited at level 42 into a fairly well known guild at the time. Was pretty excited considering I had done nothing special to warrant an invite other than existing. Saw them raid PoSky that weekend and thought “hey, in a year’s time and ~15ish levels, that could be me up there in the sky”
Yeah now I’m the only one online in the guild ever. Now I realize they musta been hurting to invite random level 40’s lol. Ah well

It hurts when that happens. I've had a couple of good guilds like that in WoW that I thought would be my forever home, that still end up going on hiatus or falling apart for some other reason.
But yup I had finally gotten my first 46+ character a while back, thinking "oh cool now I finally get to see some planes!" only to find out Velious was coming out and my current guild was not going to do them anymore. Not to mention the bar was raised to 55+ for Velious raids. It was like "c'mon now! Can't seem to win lol".

Back in the day, on EQ live, there did used to be some individuals who started running server open raids, advertising in public channels for days beforehand to build up interest. I remember signing up and attending such raids. They tended to be attended by higher level players from smaller guilds and guildless folks alike. They were generally not against the most current content, and usually only lasted 2-3 hours. They could sometimes be chaotic, but sometimes be fun, usually depending on the leader(s).
There were also a couple of "semi-open raid alliances" which had a listed set of regulars, run like a casual raidforce. There were usually a couple of smaller guilds whos members would all be defacto members of that raid alliance, but folks in other (usually non-raiding) guilds could ask to be added to the roster, and some unguilded people also joined it. Every raidmember would be treated the same, regardless of tag, if they were accepted as a raidforce member. These raid alliance raids were usually a bit better organized than true open raids, as they had a core of the same people each week. They were basically for folks who wanted their own very casual guild families (which didn't focus on or have the size for raiding) but who still wanted to be part of a casual but larger grouping for the occasional raids. Admittedly this concept worked far better in EQ2 than in the original EQ, especially on Antonia Bayle server where there were a lot of small RP guilds who had high levels who sometimes wanted to raid.
Whether these approaches would work on P99 is another question. Even on Green, the population is not that high. But mostly, it would need someone to actually want to do it, who had enough connections across the server to get the initial support needed. There would also need to be people who wanted to do it, all available and willing at the same time. The populations may not be sufficient to support that, I don't know.

I don't know (or care to know) all the guild politics and history of which raid guild did what to who.... and maybe it is that you were referring to? I don't know. I've only been on P99 since Feb this year.
On an open raid or in a raid alliance, were there one, the raiders do "earn it" themselves. There is nothing automatically "unearned" about loot won on such kinds of raids. I have memories of really fun open raids on live, where people got nice upgrades. It had (and has) nothing to do with what raids guilds are doing.

I don't think we are even in the same conversation, sir.
There is nothing wrong with hardcore raiding guilds. All power to you, whatever floats your boat. But some of us were never interested in that in live and joined more casual forces. And I suspect that some players on P99 are the same. No disrespect, but don't assume we are all that kind of player. This is just a hobby, a fun hobby yes, but not a lifestyle, not for all of us.
Now I don't know what all this "bag limit" thing you speak about is. That is not a phrase I remember from live. if the way the server is run somehow prevents any open raids, that would be weird, but I don't know - I did say I've not been here that long. :)
If you read my first post on this thread, I was speaking of some good memories of open raid alliance and fully open raids from when I played on in live back in the day. It worked well back then. It was the experience of many players. If it wasn't for you, that's still ok.
That's all.

What the part-time propagandists conveniently fail to mention: Seal Team started and helped run and maintain the server-wide open raids for a very long time.
As for OP's question: like others have said, you'd have to join a raid guild to raid. Open raids are history. Seal Team is recruiting and has killed every raid target on the box, and we recently lowered a lot of the barriers to entry for new recruits. Give us a shot, you might be surprised. I've raided consistently on P99 for about 7 years now and never had this much fun anywhere else. :)

Most raid targets are easy. The difficult part is to grab the target from your competition.
The current system premieres the guilds that have players that will stare at an empty screen for hours and hours on end until something pops and that's when everybody else in the guild logs on their characters that have been parked at the raid location (i.e. they were unable to play them for the duration of that raid window).
Guilds like this believe that they've "earned" the pixels this way and sure, by the current rules they have. "I've wasted more time than you" is otherwise a pretty poor argument for having earned something. The system creates inherenty unfun and unhealthy gameplay.
The server staff knows this and seemingly wants it to be this way. So be it. Don't like it, don't raid. It's not something mandatory for a good EQ-experience, in fact it's probably best not to raid at all.

Given the responses on this thread, it seems like my only hope of ever seeing a raid zone was to join current day live EQ and try to level high enough where I could possibly solo them. Unfortunately my attempts to load that game from my external harddrive (my current one is tight on space) did not work so sadly it looks like I'm stuck here instead.
Everything just feels hopeless.

There are plenty of guilds on green that you can join and get to see raid zones. Gathered Might, Fires of Heaven, Castle still probably do Hate, Fear and Sky. If you want to see things like VP or ToV or other high end bosses you will need to join Kingdom or Seal Team. If your entire desire is to just see the zones there is no reason you can't join any of the guilds I listed and tag along.

If loot isnt your goal and you just want to experience raiding on p99.
You can ask Any guild that's going on a raid if you can be a guest. Make it clear you don't want any loot and that you want to help them just so you can experience raiding. Be sure they get you into a group. It's that easy. I've done it many times with many different guilds.
Ask someone in the guild who an officer is and contact that officer with the request.

I've just had a lot of bad experiences with guilds in the past, getting rejected and whatnot. And the few I was able to even get into ended up being corrupt and I'd feel ostracized and cheated in there for not being a part of their inner circle.
It would just be cool to see a raid on this server that didn't require having the right connections, but I understand that this won't happen here.

P99 is different. You won't get kicked out if your horrible at raiding.
JUST ASK. as long as you don't be a dick. ANYONE CAN RAID on this server
Casual Guilds: Castle, Fires of Heaven, Safe Space, Gathered Might, Force of Will
Competitive Raiding Guilds: Seal Team, Kingdom
Just ask anyone in that guild and I can guarantee you, they'll let you in
Some guilds like Seal Team and Kingdom have raid requirements though. If you are really unsure about this raiding thing, then join one of the casual raiding guilds.

I do listen, I've just explained why I'm scared to ask, that's all. I have been kicked from guilds before for messing up and asking too many questions. I've also been cheated by corrupt loot councils in other games, and feeling lonely because I'm not lucky to be a part of their inner circles. That's even assuming I'm even let into a guild after asking, they can easily raise their open palm and say "thou shalt not pass!".
I would in fact ask a lot of questions, because I've only barely ever had one level 50+ character on this server and that was only recently, and I stopped at 53 because it ended up being too tough. So a lot of these higher level zones would genuinely be new to me. The last guild I was in refused to help me out after I asked.

It's hard to level as most classes when you don't have any friends, can't get any groups, and die every other attempt at quad kiting because of big backstabbing birds.
I'm on necromancer attempt #10 right now though, I know they can solo to 60, maybe it'll be different this time.
