Characters only live 3 months and become ghosts permanently afterwards.
Ghost characters are non-kos and non-interactive with the gameworld, they can click and open doors though, and have their own chat channels, can't talk to living pcs unless the living pcs have spells to see-undead or ghosttalk
You can bequeath one single item via one of the lawyer NPCs in the town halls of the main cities. Doing this requires depositing other items as a 'tax' so you must give away 10 or so magical lvl 40+ items to the npc that will never be recovered.
A command to check how much time you have left, /pulse or something, 'you have 1 day left on your journey'
Gear has diminishing returns the farther away in level you are from when it drops, so an item that drops off a level 30 mob, does nothing for a lvl 19 character, has 1% effect on a lvl 20 character, and 50% effect on a lvl 30 character. And full effect on a lvl 40 character.
nonmagical and tradeskilled items always have full effect
Every race and class combination has an epic 0.5 quest that rewards a decent but classicly not OP item and lets you then progress past lvl 20
Everything is droppable
tradeskills level 10x faster and fail less often and cost 25x more
enchanted, vials etc or is vendor bought
Resists on even cons and higher is 5x and every mob has a buff to MR and other resists to varrying degrees exp mobs not so much, hard/named mobs, guards of named mobs, boss mobs tons of MR, your only going to have a 5% chance to hit a raid mob with anything. It will be nigh impossible to solo regular end game boss mobs like archmagus/lord.
TEAL colored (low con but still gives exp) mobs like -8 lvls will have much reduced resists/ac/atk and should be soloable by everyone
City mobs liek Sir Lucan and other guild leaders and masters will have more normal stats and still be mini raid bosses, spawn more regularly like every 6 hrs, have big faction normalized hits and drop more classicly less oP normalized classic loots like I talked about above as a sort of end game quest/faction system which will flag you for pvp for 1 day when you attack them.
Attacking a dragon or other raid boss will flag you for pvp for 1 day
Healing or buffing a player who is raid flagged will flag you for pvp for 1 day
There will be teams based on good/evil/race and you will be able to do quests to join a neutral team. Teams will effect who you can pvp with once u get flagged in combat with npcs.
PvP will be with all level ranges and anyone can attack a pvp flagged player if u do u are flagged for 1 day and all pvp stats are normalized so a lvl 1 and lvl 60 use the same stats and skill points in pvp regardless of gear and levels, maybe we could give the higher lvl player a 5% bonus in to hit/defense/resists
Pumice is instant cast and stacks up to 40 charges.

will add in and finish more classic quests invovling the city populations, like troll warriors collecting trophies from good aligned warrior guild leaders, bertox temple having quests to kill priests of different temples etc

the quested team (there's 4 of them lets say and they are the 4th team) is FFA when pvp flagged they can attack eachother, call them the neutral team but really more like the pirate team
when flagged good can attack evil, evil good, neutral/human team can attack team evil and not team good yes it's imba, you wanted to be a troll though right? you could have rolled barbarian shaman
maybe open up a few class choices, DE bard, troll wiz, ogre mage, dwarf shaman, gnome druid, ogre druid, troll priest etc

oh, and finally, most important, only trains are illegal ish like training raids while not pvp flagged
otherwise it's whatever goes
kill stealing is legal, whoever does most dmg gets the loot bring ur A game for zlandicar

Kerrans are always pvp flagged and can always pvp everyone
Kerrens start in kerra island and can be warrior, sham, bard, druid only
if kerrans kill all the notable npcs in your city within a 24 hour period that city becomes overrun with kerrans and all npcs respawn as kerran versions for one and a half weeks 10 days
There should be a way to counter or reduce the impact of 40x pumice hits.
otherwise sounds really cool.
I really feel u here, but pumice juggling makes things more interesting
maybe no stacking pumice but still isnta, so only as many as you have bag slots for
maybe .5 or 3 second cast but uninteruptable i don't want to mess with channeling code tho
it just sucks that 10 casters can spam root on a melee would make it imba u should be able to dispell magic like an inquisitor on this server because magic sucks and is a tool of evil and really only direct heals/dds/taps should matter, except maybe disease and poison if ur dumb enough to not wear any care those can't be pumiced, they can be cured tho
so liek there woulld be a tierd threat system from spells
i just think root/invis and all that garbage should be a strategic opener and then not really a game changer once u and ur teammates have pumice going
bards and rangers can spam that shit anyway so it just gives more capability to warriors and rogues to spam it too

the project described by starkind would require so much work that it would end up being a totally different game with EQ labels.
so maybe this community could crowdfund an MMO. we know better than most what makes a game great. its like why CD projekt red was so successful, games designed and built by gamers. we just need to avoid the mistakes they made, namely selling out to corporate overlords.
we couldnt do worse than the cyberpunk launch

I think we must accept that brad kind of made a good game by accident. I was already worried about pantheon before he passed away, there's just way too much design bloat going on. Slap modern graphics and maybe one or two small qol changes on classic EQ and put it out as a new franchise. Everyone will know it as "that everquest game". You will corner the market on the people who want that.

Naw. I love EQ core mechanics and even the formulas behind it. I just wanted to do EQ plus. Like more RP, quest, and pvp options, with some entropy to keep it fresh. Maybe a slight rebalance so everyone is at the same power scale until they out level mobs.
Just add more of what makes classic EQ great. Without really changing the classes. Just making dark blue, even cons harder, more fully fleshed out and varied. Like maybe s ro, oasis, n ro dervs are weak to cold, strong against fire at even con levels. Planar mobs are tougher, fewer weaknesses. And people will have more incentive to tradeskill and rp in the safe spaces that the casual content is, like 1 group able mobs, thered be more of that. Still raid content though. It would require community and choices and more risk tho.
I just want to fully realize EQs strengths and diversity and community aspects. And create some mechanics that make end game more interesting and characters would now have a real story arc from beginning to end. With incentive for players to either carry on that characters persona in a new one or try a different one entirely.
I like the idea of fleshing out the in game factions and enabling players to interact within different factions themselves in more novel and competitive ways. For that there needs to be more meaningful alternative loot and story then what the most basic experience provides.
EQ classic game mechanics are great though. And pvp is really close to good in many ways that modern games ruin in order to provide perfect balance and keep players subbing.

So we crowdfund, obtain the rights to EQ, and then we hire some devs and make an EQ Reboot.
We do not guarantee any returns on investment. All investors will understand that this project is a labor of love. We do not release an incomplete product. We work on it until We are all satisfied with the build of the game. We place game mechanics over flashy graphics. We rely on our experience and other old school player input for our game features.
These should be core values of the company we start to build the game.

Any graphics rehaul that people want would need to focus on realistic animations with colours done in a style that mimics dnd/warhammer figure paint jobs
I loved how logging in to eq the first time it was like some tabletop mniatures came to life.

Make like an "antonica 2" using the same textures and geometric styles as say... kunark, more detailed than vanilla but not as modern looking as Luclin+ engine.
Granted it would all be volunteers and this would never happen, but I think it would be cooler than just reskinning existing zones with custom lore\mobs ala shards of dalaya

I have no actual technical knowledge about anything, but with the EQEMU code open source and all the other aspects of EQ available, it seems like making some custom zones with eq textures and running in the EQ EMU environment seems really possible.
Possibly coding the AI pathing and behavior would be challenging, but again I've got no idea.
It would be fun to make an alternate EQ world.
