View Full Version : Trying to find some cool fashionquest for a troll shaman.

Figure it will be easier to stick with this character if I can put together a cool, complete look for a troll. Something that isn't a total piecemeal mess to look at.
For starters, can anyone tell me what armor set this is, where it says "Scale"?

If anyone's got some other suggestions too I'm open to them. :D

I don't know of a set for a shaman with that graphic. "Scale" is the optional Velious plate graphic, and not commonly used even on the plate-wearing classes. The Plane of Growth sets use the alternate graphics, but since the shaman is a chain class it gets the "ringmail" graphic on its plane of growth set.

You may find the https://wiki.project1999.com/FashionQuest%20Guide helpful. I would guess that "Scale" is one of either "Velious Plate 1" or "Velious Plate 2" .,.. but unfortunately people just haven't been contributing Troll screenshots for those fashion categories, so I can't say for sure.

P.S. It turns out we only have two troll screenshots among all the fashion categories on the wiki (https://wiki.project1999.com/index.php?title=Special%3ASearch&profile=advanced&search=%22%7Crace%3D%22+%22Troll%22&fulltext=Search&ns14=1&profile=advanced)!
If any trolls out there have full suits of ... well, pretty much anything, please take a screenshot and add it to the wiki (https://wiki.project1999.com/FashionQuest_Guide#Adding_.22Fashion_Show.22_Entri es_to_the_Wiki) to help your fellow trolls :)

ok i give the wiki a hard time for revealing all the secrets but the armor color tables I have been asking for 10,000 posts and you're really delivering loramin thank you!
Also thanks chortles for filling out the troll colors.

As with most things on the wiki, I can't take full credit. While I did help build that page, I believe someone else (the unfortunately named "Diarrheaguy999") added those wonderful color tables.

This is the kind of project that would be most effectively dealt with by an individual or two who have their own emulator servers and who can use GM powers to summon themselves the equipment in question. So long as they get Velious textures enabled and use old world models it'll look the same one server to the next.
You're correct about scale being one of the Velious plate textures, with (unsurprisingly) plate being the other. I believe scale counts as plate1 and the normal Velious plate counts as plate2. I don't see any advantage to using the database terminology though. Ringmail is the alternate for chain. Cloth is the alternate for robes (previous to Velious, clothies' only type-specific graphics were robes). Leather's defacto alternate set is the Velious monk set.
In the old world and kunark, you get robes, then leather--chain--plate, plus the seldom-used monk top for chest slot only. Leather through plate had individual helm graphics as well. Velious did not initially have any helm graphics; custom helms were later added for plate classes only, but I seem to recall you saying that the game engine calls them "leather" although it's moot in practice since there aren't any other Velious helms for them to be confused with.
For a shaman, the ever-popular Phase Spider Carapace will give you a scale-texture chest slot item (albeit tinted darker than default), but there aren't many/any options for that look for most the other slots.

I really feel it was a missed opportunity for the vendor bought velious armour not to use the new textures - but maybe VI didn't want to wash down the 'magic' of the new textures by letting anyone wearing them just by dumping some PP to an NPC.

yeah they were not too keen on making things accessible.

This is EQ in all its haphazard development-by-accident glory we're talking about, so it's just as likely it was a case of the guy doing the textures not being in close contact with the guy assigning them to items in the database. I agree there was some missed opportunity there, which became a much larger missed opportunity when the very next expansion chucked all that work in the trashcan with the new character models. The Velious textures seemed something of an afterthought, never pushed hard, and not even enabled easily. The .ini file modification required to make them work in-era was technical enough that I suspect the majority of users never enabled them. I didn't myself, until near the tail end of the expansion.

can u still edit the ini or whatever or patch the globalload to get the velious textures on normal gear?
i played on lives test server for a number of years and iirc there was a short time were if u equiped a leather armor or something it would show velious textures too so i think they were flirting with just upgrading everything to velious and not making it raid only stuff
i had tizmaks on my druid )

Thanks everyone. I think I have a decent combo in mind now, just missing a piece. It'll be really nice when that Nathsar armor makes it into the game too, that looks pretty neat.

Troll has a lot going for it that I like. The fashion thing and the exp penalty are the only two things I really hate about them. xD

It isn't perfect but I think it's okay for what options I had available. At least it's coordinated in terms of color and theme. It'll do until I can raid one day and get a full class set or something.

I know some would argue that I'm playing the wrong game if I care about character looks but it's just how I am. I am that guy who would forgo an item with awesome stats if it meant looking terrible.

The scale armor pattern can be acheived with a Phase Spider Carapace, at least the body portion. I assume it's the same for most armors of similar style.

I wouldn't be surprised if the artist (was) asked to do them, got told they weren't needed half way through the project, the artist completed them off the books anyway and after presenting the heads decided it would be good to use them after all.

Is that one "suit" of armor or a bunch of separate pieces? If you specify the armor pieces (or point me to your character's Magelo) I can add it to the relevant wiki "fashion show" pages.

Bunch of separate pieces. Chest is crystal chitin, legs are ry'gorr, among a mix of others.
I actually gave him an entirely different look not too long ago though. My shaman is mostly wearing a full set of arctic wyvern, but I haven't posted a screenshot as it's not complete. I'm broke now plus I don't really see anyone bothering to make the "non-wisdom" pieces of that set.

Just FYI, Stamina is generally considered to be more important for Shaman than Wisdom.
Stamina = HP, which you can trade for mana when you need it ... but (unlike Wisdom/mana) it also helps keep you alive.

True. I opted to focus more on wisdom for now because it helps make tradeskills easier.
I'm only missing the gloves, arms and boots. The first two I suppose would be good (just too poor to afford them atm) but the boots are probably not very much in demand.

Prices for everything are ridiculous here.
