Never enough polls, would you play on a permadeath server? Bet there wouldn't be much raid drama on a server like this.

Would be fun to see which scumbag troll greifer would be the last one playing but idk if I would.

Yeah definitely. God originally intended there to be a classic Discord pvp server but it got cancelled for a handful of reasons (daybreak?)

That server originally came out rather late in the timeline like POP or something, I recall the "newbie quests" being in game all those fun little quests you could do from level 1 collecting bugs and stuff in your local noob neighborhood.

But it was a vanilla only server but didn't retro stuff like those noob quests, blackened ALLOY was in game so the babs was like the best weapon in the game, though no one actually got that weapon because it was too risky to go down there for fear of ganking and stuff.

I wouldn't do pvp. But would do permadeath pve.

I'd rather see a /permadeath command (on Blue) you can use to flag yourself for permadeath. Otherwise a server of just such people would probably be pretty lonely.

I would do it for fun as long as the exp rate was 10 times higher.

A server full of monks, sk’s and necro’s?

So... would they still implement Cazic Touch on such a server?

The xp modifier on the Discord server was huge. Great fun. Armies of halfling tearing misguidedly adventurous humans to pieces.

Would anyone raid on such a server?

Can you imagine the pressure a healer would be under in a group?!

This type of challenge never seems like a good idea to me in a game like EQ. First time your internet hiccups or you have a power outage, you're starting over. Most folks would quit pretty early.

A couple of modified variants seem more practical in this type of setting. You could do a "permadeath" server with bind and rezzing disabled and your corpse stays dead when it dies, but your character still respawns in a new life at its start location with the opportunity to at least loot the gear off the old corpse. Alternately keep the normal game but with experience-rezzing disabled so as to at least give people a healthy respect for death.

I've thought a little about permadeath guilds and how spells like resurrection would fit in with them. My thinking was that you couldn't loot your corpse until you were res'd (and you could make it a non-XP res only, like you said).

Have also thought about forcing you to be in the same zone for that res (maybe forcing perma invis so you're like a ghost, essentially). Basically haunting your corpse until someone res' you.

why would anyone want to waste resource making a server like this

just delete your character manually when you die??

I would say mad props to any enchanter who can make it to max level on a perma death server, but if they exclusively charmed stuff in wide outside zones where they could space out to be safe from charm breaks it could be do-able, then only latency or personal pc problems would kill you

But if they charm soloed through dungeons where mobs con blue, and did that all the way to max level without dying once? Props for that

Enchanters can also be played without charming.

dying to LD or game bugs on a permadeath server is my only hangup with this style of gameplay

I would let people cheat by pulling their netcards even if i would honor the system if LD didnt result in permadeath, maybe like a 1 week time out instead

Everquest is too slow of a game for permadeath to be a fun mechanic. This isn't like Diablo 2 where you can get a character up to level 75 in like 10 hours.

There are just too many factors that can instant kill your character if you are not careful, including technical troubles such as going LD.

A server like that would also have a huge problem with class distributions. Most people would probably be running classes like Necro/Monk/Shadowknight for FD. Rogues and Warriors probably wouldn't exist.

when I play eq im looking for an excuse to escape my heroin addiction every time.

If permadeath was around then I may not ever come back when i died, but I may play a lot more seriously.

Or option c Id play way more seriously for a few weeks then die drunk one night just trying to bank, and never come back.

Heroin addiction and EQ go hand in hand.

WoW is trying out the permadeath thing on their Season of Mastery server, but like Shamwow mentioned, not only did they already have faster leveling, but they boosted it with +40% xp gain from quest turn ins

The funny thing is people already found out ways to grief the hardcore players on PVE servers. What they do is get a group of rogues to hide in strealth near a quest mob, with one wearing a mind control cap engineering item. Then right when an opposing faction player is about to tag the mob, the rogue comes out of stealth and mind controls it. This puts the mob on his faction, so when they player tags the mob he flags himself for pvp as if he just attacked a player. Then the gang of rogues jump him at level 60 and ruin his hardcore run lol

Basically this, although I'd like it on new servers. A server would literally die - quickly. Griefers as well as people ragequitting would reduce it to Red levels of whocares in 3 month's time.

I recall a guild on blue... I think the name was No Need for Rez(?) which was for this intent. I do think a /command would be a mistake though, as this could be initiated by anyone with access to the account. It'd be preferable for it to be an option when creating the character. May as well have it automatically place you in a permadeath guild that you can choose to leave or hide with /anon in order to avoid griefers and find fellow lunatics to play with.

I wouldn't play a server dedicated to it but I'd give this a go for funsies.

The interesting thing is, the only reason that Season of Mastery exists is because Holly Windstalker, formerly a live EQ dev, got hired by Blizzard and taught them all what a financial goldmine TLP variant servers with different rulechanges (such as faster leveling, harder raid bosses, and "hardcore" mode on Season of Mastery servers) can be for your company

You know the second enough people get high enough to do a serious raid they will all be trained royally. On a server like that, there is really no consequences for griefers. Even if you get banned, that would be no different then the permadeaths you inflict on others to get that ban. Youll just restart like everyone else but had the satisfaction of permadeathing 50+ hardcore raiders lol.

I'm not sure she was the pioneer of changing game mechanics (XP rates etc) to keep things interesting.
