View Full Version : Troll trying to get High Pass faction

I'm seeing a lot of info on the wiki about things I can kill to raise faction with High Pass. How accurate is the faction info there? It says that the orcs/gnolls within High Pass give 2 points, and the highwaymen/gnolls/raiders in Karana give 10. Where do these numbers come from, as I don't know of a way to see the exact raise in game? Or is it just an estimate?
Anyone have an efficient suggestion for High Pass faction that I can do solo as a 22 Troll?

Most wiki information about faction hits are wrong sadly, and I have no idea if the current values are correct for the monsters you are talking about. From my understanding, the majority of monsters only give 1 or 2 faction per kill, which is why that is typically the slowest way to go.
Some monsters are well documented at giving more faction per kill (such as Velious City Leaders), but those mobs are easy to document since they are killed so often, and it is easy to see the large jump in faction.
As a Troll I wouldn't worry about raising faction in good cities, especially Highpass, where you don't need to buy any spells for Shadowknight/Shaman. With a bit more game knowledge evil races can find enough places to vendor. I mostly play a Troll or Ogre, and I have little issue with vendoring, banking, etc.
If you are dead set on improving your faction, I believe https://wiki.project1999.com/Orc_Scalp_Collecting is the way to go for highpass. But since I assume you are still KoS, you will probably need to ask a druid to wolf form you first before doing the quest turn in.

Thanks for the info, that will save me some wild goose chases. It's mostly for fun and novelty that I want to raise it.

You're a 22 troll what? Are you a shaman and do you worship Innoruuk? If so, you can get yourself the halfling illusion mask (skinned halfling face mask) from the Innoruuk symbol questline to help you do turnins without a wolf form, and hand in orc and gnoll scalps.
But the faction hit values you find on the wiki are unreliable, as they are 90% cut and pasted from zam, and don't accurately apply to p99. For instance, I killed a TON of the named Shralok orcs in Kithicor and can tell you with 99% certainty they are NOT the 10 or so points the wiki said they would be.
Anyway, if what you're after is the most improvement you can get for highpass without damaging any other factions, your top choices are going to be Karana bandits, Mucktail gnolls (EK or Highpass), and Shralok orcs (Highpass and Kithicor Forest).. The side benefit of the Shraloks (which will be tough solo at 22) is that you'll raise Kithicor Residents which applies to a couple of the WC druid ring npcs.
Good luck!
update: looks like someone has updated the wiki a bit as those kithicor orcs now show a <3 number instead of the 10 I remember from months ago.

Yep, 18 hours so far killing the gnolls and still at scowling faction :)
So they are definitely 1 point.

Most standard mobs are going to hive 1 point faction from killing. I'm not sure where some of these numbers come from as alakazaham has much more reliable numbers even for out of era.
As others have mentioned you probably don't want to waste your time worrying about this faction. It's not really necessary for everyone except maybe rogues. In fact many good races trade their amiable faction in for scowling by choosing to level on guards in highkeep.

Now at threateningly after 21 hours. If each gnoll is 1 point, that's about 45 gnolls per hour to get the 950 or so points and that seems about right. Went through 2 stacks of standard food/drink and had people vendor/bank for me 3 times. Made 200p and 2 levels of experience. Should be about 7 more hours until dubious. Then I can turn in the scalps :)

I can respect the faction hustle. If you're this committed, you may as well max Rivervale faction. It's the easiest city (guards / merchants) to max in the game.
Might be able to buy/sell there and it's close to Kithicor.
https://wiki.project1999.com/Bandages_for_Honeybugger
I think its like 10-16 backpacks from KoS to get maxed.
Once maxed you can get an instantly rechargeable instant heal ring. See Manadance in my signature to see what I mean.

FYI if One of the reasons you’re looking to do this is to be able to vendor there is a neutral vendor on the first floor of high keep that will sell to anyone

You guys are adorable, albeit unhelpful. Castle's suggestion is partly correct, and so is cd288's. However both are going to get you killed.
In Rivervale, Thekela Meepup is a cleric outside her guild house and will murder you. The only way to raise Priests of Mischief is to do the quest with Beek Guinders inside the cleric guild. You might be able to do it with wolf form but you'd have to hunt literally hundreds of black and ruined wolf pelts. (P.S. you need this faction if you're going to recharge that ring Castle mentioned.)
And as far as getting to an indifferent merchant inside Highkeep... well, you're going to have to get past the guards now, aren't you?
Well, maybe the suggestions are there for once you get Gather Shadows at level 30. Until then, keep up the good work and enjoy the hunt!

If you’re in Highkeep you’re either killing goblins guards or nobles. If you’re not a class that can invis there’s plenty of people who can invis you for a run to the vendor (and most of the time the first floor guards are dead anyway)

The named Gnolls in East Karana (the Mucktails), by the giant spiders, offer the biggest + faction hits with the Highpass Guards.

Been there, done that. Did it on a Dark Elf Wizard with a Manastone ;) Cheers, mate.
Oh, and you don't need to hunt hundreds of wolves. The newbies do it and vendor it for you. I simply had to scour hundreds of vendors =)

Vendor diving as a dark elf is actually pretty easy if you have done the bandages bit. You get merchants faction as well as several other Rivervale factions. And I wouldn't be at all surprised to find out that, as a wizard, he was teleporting to vendors all over classic Norrathian zones for some of those. Black wolf pelts drop in Nek Forest, Innothule and Greater Faydark in addition to Misty Thicket and East Commons, you get the idea...

Thanks for the replies. I'm amiable to the highpass guards now, dubious to the merchants, dubious to freeport and qeynos guards. The highpass gnoll fang quests work well, along with bandit killing (for a troll, the lake rathe ones by the ogres are the best since you can sell the loot right there) and blackburrow gnoll killing. There's still a faction in highpass that scowls to me (I think the one associated with their king) but they can be avoided.
Getting faction to the highkeep bank looks to be a huge pain so I probably won't do that.
So, now I can pretty much ride both ships as a troll and make the journey from freeport to qeynos without going the long way round. I don't really use ports so that's helpful to me. Also highpass is a chill spot to do some trade skills.
Been leveling in mistmoore and I'm hoping after a while those antonican bards will warm up to me as well.
Not super interested in items with charges, as the recharging thing seems like an exploit to me.

Bandage quest using hide/invis to max guard faction. Wolf form from a druid to get to dubious for quest hand-ins for cleric faction.
https://wiki.project1999.com/Priests_of_Mischief
I killed some wolves, but mostly got pelts from vendors. Any quality of grey wolf pelt can be combined with a knife to downgrade it. Easy way to get a lot of ruined pelts. Berries are a ground spawn in Misty Thicket.
Still KoS to druids, but maxed on guards and amiable to clerics.
Takes a lot of time, but if you got a manastone and want to Manadance™ on your DE Wiz, this is the way.

While I'm not going to argue with your feeling that [vendor] recharging clickies is an exploit, I will point out that in the case of the Squad Ring and Prayer Beads (from quests in both Qeynos and Freeport), recharging via quest was built into the classic game. In both cases, there is npc dialogue, faction requirement and story implemented. In fact, there are other cases where quest rewarded items seem to have text indicating that items should be rechargeable. (Kerran fishing spear, classic bonethunder staff, probably more) But from the point of view of how many hours it would take to grind out the faction to be able to do the recharging quest on the squad ring, and having to make a trip to Rivervale for a single click of the Healing spell, I get it.
Congrats on your freedom of movement across all of Norrath! See you out there!

On a new server, especially a PvP server, 1 click of instaheal is pretty OP.
For a halfling who is already close to maxing faction and is low-mid levels, it can also save your butt -- and you're likely travelling back to Rivervale at some point around those levels.
After that, it only makes sense for a Druid (Misty Thicket self port) or a Wiz (bind at the NPC, and self-port all around the world) with a manastone.
There is also a cleric/pally NPC in Erudin that casts 100hp heal for 2 gold. If you don't mind carrying gold, also not a bad deal. IIRC, when I checked P99 didn't have this quest in or it didn't work. Maybe it was a Velious or post-velious thing?
have fun, kids
