Republicans complaining the tax payers money is being invested into the people vs

1.9 Trillion tax cut which served to benefit no one except the ultra rich

Not to mention the Republican Members of Congress Whose PPP Loans were Forgiven

Matt Gaetz (R-FL): $476,000
Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA): $180,000
Greg Pence (R-IN): $79,441
Vern Buchanan (R-FL): $2.8 Million
Keven Hern (R-OK): $1.07 Million
Roger Williams (R-TX): $1.43 Million
Brett Guthrie (R-KY): $4.3 Million
Ralph Norman (R-SC): $306,520
Ralph Abraham (R-LA): $38,000
Mike Kelly (R-PA): $974,100
Vicki Hartzler (R-MO): $451,200
Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) $988,700
Carol Miller (R-WV) $3.1 Millon

Republicans have NO moral argument saying we can't bail out those 90% making under $75,000 a year by the tune of $20K

University costs are exorbitant and needlessly inflated

But if the federal govt is backing loans I don’t see why they shouldn’t provide it at 0% interest at least for tax paying citizens. For those of us that start paying after we land jobs.

As I pointed out I’ve already payed over 110k ok a 70k loan but still owe 30k? Fuck the taxpayer I have already paid off my debt +40k and still owe nearly as much.

Thankfully my wife is a teacher earning pennies on the dollar so we fall just below the 250k threshold. So my debt is now 20k not 30k. Tax payers have already got a lot more out of me than invested.

Federal student loans should not aim to make money.

It’s an investment in our communal future. Make it 0% interest. We all profit when people make their lives better (hi to you income tax!)

You went to college and still have no idea why loans have interest.

https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/paul-pelosi-benefits-big-ppp-forgiveness

Paul Pelosi benefits big with PPP forgiveness, company won't repay millions

Paul Pelosi, the husband to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), is linked to a company that saw millions in loans forgiven through the Paycheck Protection Program.

The Paycheck Protection Program was a national mainstay at the height of the pandemic to help small businesses make their way through a marred economy and retain employees.

lol dude

The Economy was shut down and PPP loans were meant to be forgiven by design to keep businesses open and people employed. Agree or disagree with it. Fine. But it was passed by both parties in Congress by wide margins

It's spending so yes he does? Congress holds the purse, President holds the sword.

Definitely up for debate. But in some complicated steps scholars have already argued the president can.

Congress, granted the Secretary of Education, who works for the president, the specific and unrestricted authority to create and to cancel or modify debt owed under federal student loan programs.

Essentially the president could collaborate with the U.S. Department of Education to stop collecting on people’s student loans.

We should really prioritize eliminating our debt and having a sovereign wealth fund for future economic crises / “rainy days”

Also picking winners and losers is dumb. We subsidize corn but Texas cattle ranchers are going broke and selling their herds. Steak is gonna be $100 a pound in a few years

It's a strange tactic IMO to teach people to not be racist by teaching them that races can be categorized, and dunked on.

It's kind of like saying, "look I believe in racist stereotyping, but racism against X Y and Z is just not to be tolerated (even though it's clearly true as I believe in the concepts behind them: Racial stereotypes)."

But that said, im glad we're doing the social decay because death to america so keep it going! Just wanted to point it out.

Sarcasm/jokes aside, I feel 0 guilt for abusing a system built around private business that has exploded from gouging young people trying to get an education.

Either the government shouldn't be involved at all, or if they want to be involved with the loan process, there should be price controls in place to prevent the kind of gouging we've had the last few decades. The one foot in, one foot out approach is the problem. For-profit schools extracting govt money just fuels the inflation of tuition.

If they want to build a whole system around exploiting people, then it should be expected that people will exploit the system for their own benefit as well.

Student debt relief is the government actively picking winners and losers. This is a politically divisive policy and that was obvious. It’s also obvious that tuition has been going up and they’re spending the money on Rec centers and student life, not professors and research

Would’ve been better to bring back the child tax credit, which I also oppose btw on the grounds that we’re bankrupt and inflation is 10%, but that would’ve at least made sense and helped far more

This was a dumb policy. And I reiterate I voted for Biden and think trump was a dumb ass. I am not a “right wing cis white male cracker ass peckerwood,” I’m just a person who understands if you run in the red long enough you’re fucked. It’s time for surpluses

You're just parroting that fake Indian Elizabeth Warren's Plan. That's where your letter comes from. They can 'argue' it all they want. Especially when they are the ones getting PAID by such an action. The Secretary of Education does not have the authority to wave a magic wand and erase a trillion dollars in student loan debt.

Government Agencies having such broad powers has already been addressed by The Supreme Court

https://www.law.cornell.edu/supct/html/99-1257.ZS.html

2. Section 109(b)(1) does not delegate legislative power to the EPA. When conferring decision making authority upon agencies, Congress must lay down an intelligible principle to which the person or body authorized to act is directed to conform. J. W. Hampton, Jr., & Co. v. United States, 276 U.S. 394, 409. An agency cannot cure an unlawful delegation of legislative power by adopting in its discretion a limiting construction of the statute.

I still accepted my free $4k-ish gov’t checks despite the fact that I was working in healthcare straight through the pandemic. What am I gonna do, mail them back and say “no thanks I don’t need this”?

But I do think the crazy 40%-ish of PPP money going to scams/fraud is pretty fucked up

No one would turn away free money. That’s why you don’t give it out

I mean I would. But I grew up when the word man meant something entirely different than it does now. I’ll be holding off 1000 chinamen in the Aleutians while you guys figure out how to stop holding each others dick’s and grow a pair

Congress has not passed a law that allows The President to forgive this specific Student Loan Debt

You realize the US defends Japan, right? It does matter

To this I say “kinda”. I was an engineer at Command Fleet Activities Yokosuka base for 6 years.

It’s more like the US exploits Japan allowing us to have multiple military bases on their land to keep pressure on China. We don’t give two shits about protecting them. Tip of the spear, not tip of the shield. And what we’ve done to Okinawa is fucking tragic. One of the nicest places and people on earth, and we’ve essentially turned their whole main island into a giant military base. The locals try to push back, but always fail.

And we get to use their government subsidized labor for a large portion of the maintenance we do. If it’s not nuclear or any other sensitive system, chances are it’s a Japanese guy turning the wrench.

The Japanese nationalist government would love nothing more than to kick us out and rebuild their military. But China also hates the fuck out of Japan for the vast number of atrocities they committed in WWII, so if the US left I wouldn’t be surprised if China came in for revenge.

So yeah, protection is a side affect of our main reason being there. It’s not some noble cause.

No one’s yet mentioned the fact that many, many jobs that “require” a college degree, still end up having their employees learn the bulk of their job function EXCLUSIVELY during training. Now this isn’t all jobs, for example extremely specialized jobs like engineering

Speaking from my own field, the only part of behavioral health I see people actively using knowledge from their degree is psychiatry or nurse practitioner, prescribing meds. The rest is experienced based. MAYBE outpatient counseling, depending on what modality is being used

Yet the legal scam that is college continues not only unabated, but even more encouraged now that it got a mini-subsidy at the expense of the working class

I have an nearly free associate’s degree and I compete for jobs with people who have master’s degrees and 100k in student debt, and my associate’s degree is unrelated to the field I work in (until recent events but they’re still holding my job for me for the time being)

These are all jobs I’ve seen in behavioral health that can EASILY be done without it a college degree:

- You could be doing what’s called “intakes” which is getting never ending assembly lines of people signed up at a clinic. It’s just asking them 2 hours worth of questions and entering the information into the network. Then linking them up with services, that’s it. If they freak out on you or act psychotic, you call in other help

- You could be a case manager, which involves having a caseload of people you check up on to make sure their services are meeting their needs and offering other resources which are easy to learn (housing, SNAP, substance abuse programs, etc)

- you could work at a group home or substance abuse clinic directly with residents there. Maybe giving medications, maybe facilitating a group (this is not considered counseling)

- you could be a peer support, helping either kids or adults by taking them out in the community and doing stuff with them

- you could work at a behavioral health hospital in literally ANY position other than the top administration or doing outpatient counseling, which would require a license

- And this is just off the top of my head when I’m tired in the morning

- all of these jobs would start paying around $35k+ a year

ALL of these positions ask for a degree and yet ALL of them will either train you or you will learn as you go. The alternative? Many of them will accept you if you have no degree but “2 year experience in the field”. How do you get that experience without the degree? Beats me!

Medical is always going to demand the degree for their own liability but even EE or IT stuff, with how much information is freely out there on the internet, I could see those jobs being done by someone who is self-taught

Coding / IT, surely. Engineers still want the degrees and internships. Half of it is business and connections now / can you make people laugh over a beer. Thankfully, the other half for me is still calculus so I’m not bored to tears

Nursing degrees can be done quickly at public schools. Especially if you do dual credit in high school. Given that you can just go NP or CRNA, I think more men should consider it if they can stand being a nurse for a few years. I couldn’t, but being poor would be worse than paying one’s dues

That’s true provided that the leaders of the companies who make the outsourcing decisions know what they are doing: they have a clear vision of where they’re steering the corporate ship, and a sound plan to effectively redeploy the funds they save from outsourcing—to create new jobs that replace those lost in outsourcing.

The trouble is that some corporate leaders have neither. That’s how they ended up sending tens of thousands of jobs overseas but didn’t stay competitive.

Old Hewlett Packard is a case in point. Three decades ago, outsourcing was supposed to help the company regain its competitiveness. At least that's how its leaders sold their strategy to Wall Street, which cheered the move.

In the short-term, outsourcing did just that, helping the company cut costs by laying off thousands of employees at home.

In the long-term, it made entry of new competitors into HP’s turf easier. And that’s how the company gave its competitive advantage away, piece-by-piece, to Lenovo (CCP) and the like.

Haha (https://www.courthousenews.com/student-loan-forgiveness-plan-has-a-scotus-problem/)

Student loan forgiveness plan has a SCOTUS problem

Erikson was referring to West Virginia v. EPA, a case that curbed the Environmental Protection Agency's authority to regulate greenhouse gas emissions at coal-fired power plants.

Split along party lines, the conservative majority leaned on the major questions doctrine to strike down the EPA’s regulatory scheme. This doctrine says that explicit authorization from Congress is necessary if executive agencies are taking “major” actions that will have large economic and political significance.

West Virginia created this new standard, but the justices did not lay out a specific test to apply it. Experts predict that the loan forgiveness plan Biden announced Wednesday may be the first application.

That doesn't make it not worth doing though. Clearing those debts, for most people, means they suddenly have hundreds of dollars more a month to save, invest, or put into the economy.

Depends on the interest rate.

While former private equity executive and Federal Reserve Bank Chair Jerome Powell takes aim at workers with a pledge to “get wages down” to combat inflation, he has declined to implement a law to reduce the skyrocketing paychecks of his former colleagues on Wall Street.

A BANK OF AMERICA executive stated that “we hope” working Americans will lose leverage in the labor market in a recent private memo obtained by The Intercept. Making predictions for clients about the U.S. economy over the next several years, the memo also noted that changes in the percentage of Americans seeking jobs “should help push up the unemployment rate.”

Anyone who can't understand people's opposition to this are just completely out of touch with basic human nature and most people's sense of what's fair.

I don’t think the medical syntax is important, the jist of it to me is a sarcastic “well I suffered so they should suffer too”

And I completely agree with that. They should suffer too

Because being responsible is suffering, having discipline is suffering, facing the consequences of our choices is suffering…just because something involves suffering, doesn’t mean it’s inherently bad for us

Also, it can be seen as unfair to many others

Also, it’s legal legitimacy still seems to be in question

The best counter-point seems to be finding another example of an “unfair” bailout

So I didn't see the purpose of using an analogy comparing meeting one's agreed upon financial obligations to suffering from polio

(truck payment is 300/mo, if I fail to meet it they repo the truck. Any home emergency I have homeowner insurance, for example I had to use this when my tree fell on my house in a storm. Yea I don’t mind criticism or scrutiny, especially when it’s good intended, trolling stuff is obvious

I am definitely not a super success story but the original quote by the other poster I responded to had set a very low bar implying “everyone here is a virgin basement dwelling degenerate” type of attitude, so you give me a bar THAT low and I’ll step over it. Now if the claim had been something to the effect of “everyone here has below average long term financial planning and a terrible investment portfolio” I wouldn’t say shit :)

Long story short I loved my old 2011 frontier and had been using the same (formerly) trusted service company until they left the cap off my radiator and it caused my engine to fry, then they denied responsibility. I was using a loaner vehicle from a family member until that started to break down and I knew I had to replace it. I wanted to go with a Tacoma this time for the reliability and was exclusively looking at pre-owned up to 5-7yrs old, but in the crazy vehicle market that happened to exist in June 2021, pre-owned Tacomas were like the same price as new. So I ended up driving 150 miles for one of the last new ones on the lots. Later I had the frontier fixed (was a complete engine re-build so it took a long time), and since it was paid in full I still made $ on the sale, despite having to eat the cost of the repair. Had the repair been able to be done sooner or the loaner wasn’t breaking down things woulda turned out differently. But at least thanks to this fucked up car market I think the new one has actually gone up in value, which should never happen for a vehicle. I guess that’s not a short version…

Nissans are great though too, not lame at all. It’s all about the reliability

You have to put things in perspective.

Like when a rich person is like I don’t need Coca-Cola to have joy in my life.

It’s different when you’re slaving away in the hot sun roofing for 14 hours and you’ve got seven dollars to spend.

Like expecting that guy to not drink Coke is so obtuse.

It’s like rich libertarians are always like I don’t understand why the poor don’t pick themselves up on the bootstraps when the poor dont do anything but work and get f’d by banks.

And then they can’t afford anything else and libertarians who are purely lucky they just won the lottery like all the rest of the libertarians, are like I don’t understand, why do you need a car to feel special.

Writing from a campsite on a satellite phone in $150,000 camper.

The problem isn’t somebody bought a $300 car that’s like such a low car payment.

The problem is that in this country the guy who has a $300 car and his hobby is canoeing isn’t able to save money that’s the problem that’s the thing that we should be concerned with.

That is not his fault that is a perfectly reasonable expectation to have for anyone in this country.

Like saying $300 car payment is spending too much is like listening to Jeff Bezos try to do that price guessing game on the jimmy Fallon show.

Like come on dude do you not know what happened to prices of cars in this country after the cash for clunkers got rid of all the used ones?

Why would you know that you’re standing on a volcano somewhere.

A huge portion of student debt is held by graduate students, who much more than undergrads are on course to make more than enough money to pay them back. Anyone who can't understand people's opposition to this are just completely out of touch with basic human nature and most people's sense of what's fair.

The colleges themselves should be held more accountable, I am sympathetic when people complain about how much college costs now VS a generation ago. It really makes no sense at all.

This is the true heart of the matter. The cost of the degree is the problem and this loan forgiveness does nothing to solve it. It actually has the potential to make things worse if colleges really do increase tuition.

MrSparkle001
08-30-2022, 08:47 AM
If they have an outstanding loan it’s probably better to finish paying that before they look to spending or investing anything, right? A free $10k from daddy-government isn’t going to cover the rest of their outstanding loan

But it will make them more likely to vote for the people that gave them that free $10k.

So many people aren't understanding what's going on. Not necessarily here on this mentally ill forum, but go check out Imgur or some other woefully misinformed site.

imagine getting out manuevered by joe biden. absolute losers on the right in america. look at the so-called allies of the working class fuming over the working class getting help for once instead of a corporation.

obviously this doesn't do shit to solve the whole problem, not unless college becomes free, because, as always, the real problem is capitalism in the first place.

if you complain about crony capitalism, you are just complaining about capitalism. cronyism has been part of every economic system, capitalism is the one that rewards it most efficiently.

A few pages back you boast about "owning" a bunch of stuff, and then now say you have 3k in credit card debt. Do you not have the spare cash to pay that debt off right now? Are you living paycheck to paycheck? How much does that truck payment cost you each month?

This type of lifestyle is terrifying to me. You're one emergency away from total financial ruin.

I mean good on you if you're happy, and I'm sure the house will end up being a good investment, but I just don't understand this being a measure of "success".

I agree with you 100%. When I hit $1 mil net worth I was still driving an old Camry

People like to bitch about money but also think they need an Escalade when they make $60,000 a year.

the problem is we outsourced the majority of blue collar jobs, that are not maintenance or service jobs for the highly educated.

Meanwhile we bail out the highly educated by giving 10k checks for every one of them to banks lol

What political party is it that wants to force all manufacturing back to the USA and to remove corperate personhood, and change it so there are vast limitations on people who own 2 of anything?

Its not communist, because I just want to outlaw disposability and lies and labor exploitation in foreign countries.

But leave everything else unchanged.

Oh also we stop buying oil and disband oil companies and use up the reserves and worry about what to do when we have run out and still haven't invented fusion.
