View Full Version : Was the "gnomes seeing through walls" thing always classic?

Title. I only played a gnome to 20ish back on Live way back in the day, but I don't really remember that as being a distinct advantage the race had. Maybe my memory is fuzzy but I'm wondering if that "ability" is something that's actually unintended and might get fixed one day.

It may well be a "feature" of the Titanium client (I personally played larger races on live, so I don't remember) ... but if it is, it's almost certainly not going away, because this entire project is built around Titanium.

Was in game long before titanium, probably since day one, used it for lull-targeting quite frequently luclin and onwards (thanks koxiux!).
Works for all models (shrunk+double shrunk) and not only see through, messes with the collision detection aswell, especially round and curved geometry.
Can jump into walls and fall through the world at quite a few places (hi demiplane of blood, thanks for the coth’s zigee!)

I was a Halfling in classic and could see through many walls. It was widely understood as we were all stuck in first person and constantly accidentally running into walls.

I was a troll and I went to faydwer at like level 6 (I thought I was pretty much end game at that ponit) and when I was leveling in crushbone some gnome girl saw me and like ran and hid behind a rock said WHOAH! and then peeked around the corner because she thought I was an NPC and I remember it like it was yesterday.

Those are awesome kinds of memories. Not as cool as your story but, when I first got Morrowind, I was straight up scared to leave Seyda Neen cuz I thought a cliffracer was a dragon in the distance

Way back in the day my druid spotted the AC in South Ro. Engaged it, brought it down to about 40%...and then the dreaded BSOD. Came back, found I was dead, and someone else had taken the AC.
How's that for olden days? lmao

Wouldn't work imo without some changes.
-Class balancing, should be able to play what I want without fear.
-Gear equalizing, so folks who don't get to raid don't just get eaten alive by those who do.
-Some kind of safeguard in place to make the server playable in 10 years by a newbie.

My very first character was an Ogre Shadowknight.
I walked straight out into Feerott and was like "Aw fuck this, can't see shit"

Darkness was such a pivotal part of the EQ experience. Think about it, nearly everyone in the game starts with a lack of visibility:
*Humans, Barbarians, Erudites --> nightblind
*Ogres, Trolls, Halflings, Dark Elves, Wood Elves, High Elves --> permanently cloudy newbie zones with a lack of viewing distance
*Dwarves and Gnomes --> start in maze-like underground cities
Half-Elves that start outside Faydark are the only ones who didn't face extra visibility challenges, and even then there's still RAIN that happens.

I like how they added that little emoji sad face to BSOD almost as if to misdirect us into thinking that's a thing that doesn't happen anymore lol

Does Gems exist on P99?
I never tried it here

At least on the original client Infravision actually made NPCs glow red (predator-style), so it was pretty useful (arguably more useful than ultravision sometimes).
While I like that they attempted to recreate the darkness system, a red tint is nothing like the original infravision.

Yes, it's part of the Titanium client: just type /gems!

holy cow. I completely forgot about this until just now. So many hours spent playing while I waited for my mana to go up!

Used to hate the downtime back in the day. Today in the age of Youtube and Netflix though it's not so bad. :)

How do I handle spaces when trying to target a specific mob with /tar command?
For example, 2 mobs side by side, one named “a goblin champion” and “a goblin berserker”. Normally I would do /tar a but since both begin with “a” how do I parse out a few more letters to get the right one?
I remember a guildmate told me how but then I didn’t play for like a year and forgot

Oh a cool idea if you're waiting on a full server queue in a game, the game gives your character a buff and it either gets stronger or stays on longer the longer you wait in the queue.
Same could be done with unexpected server downtime.

Thats a great idea.
Also what'd ED do lol dammit.
/tar a_goblin_champion
another option is /tar "a g"
or "something with spaces" in quotes works for P99

I have some very similar memories of traveling around Azeroth in WoW at level ~20 back in 2005 or 2006 and thinking I was on top of the world. Those crappy green shoulderpads I had on my Orc warrior were d-o-p-e. My heart nearly leapt out of my chest when I saw a random night elf riding by on a saber mount for the first time.
Of course, I was like 10 years old and was utterly clueless, but those were fun times.

not just classic eq but classic wow....you could run through walls in vanilla wow well into AQ era. collision detection in early mmos was rough i guess

It's not target collision it's latency. The client and server are both trying to tell each other where you are and if the latency is high enough they can both be wrong and you'll end up where you oughtn't be.

I wanted to mention that wow sucks.
Gnome see thru walls is classic confirmed as of velious era.
I remember when luclin came out it was the first expansion I was reasonably high level for so I did some major cave diving with no maps at all day one, it was fun. Luclin FTl tho
