Step 1. downloading the program

Go to archive.org/details/EQP99V46

Click on Zip under download options to download the zipped file
(while this is downloading if you don't have a program to unzip files such as peazip now would be a good time to get one)

Open the zipped file by clicking on the downloaded file

Right click the folder click extract all here to extract the files to this folder
(it is important to take a moment to write down your folder path)

Download the most current patch from the p99 website

open your downloads right click the patch file mouse over more click extract all to and select your eq folder that you unzipped your files to earlier

it will ask you if you would like to replace the files as they are already there click yes as you are replacing the old files with the new patched files
(if you do not get this message you did something wrong)

Step 2. Selecting the correct files for launching the game

Open the Steam client

In the bottom left hand corner click the plus sign that says add a game

select add a non steam game

Select the browse icon at the bottom

Remember that path you wrote down? here is where you would use it.

Select the drop down menu that is next to look in

Now select the path you used to get to your folder location
(mine is home-->deck-->downloads-->eqlite)

once you get to the correct folder click open and find a file called "Launch titanium bat."

Make sure to click the ad selected programs tab

Step 3. Launch the game

head over to gaming mode go to your non steam games tab and look for
Launch Titanium.bat

click the gear icon for the options and scroll down to properties scroll down
to compatibility and check the box that says "force the use of a specific steam play compatibility tool"

once that is done choose proton 7.0-4 from the drop down list.

Go ahead and launch the game

Step 4. correcting the resolution (if its bad mine was not)

Open your designated eq folder and find the file "eqclient.ini" open it with KWrite

scroll down to the videomode section of the file

if not allready change width and width windowed to 1200 change height and heightwindowed to 800

if the text is too small in the game remember you can use the command /chatfontsize 1-8 (i.e. /chatfontsize 5 will set it to 5)

And there you have it eq should be setup and ready to play on deck minus mapping your controls to the steamdeck controller
if thats what you want to use and that should really be what you are comfortable with!

Anyone besides me have issues with exiting out of P99 on Steam Deck? It just freezes on a black screen.

Would be interested to learn about your gamepad config.. Would you perchance be willing to share it as a community configuration? Or can that not be done with "non steam" games? Maybe it can if the game is added tot he decks launcher?

I think it can be done but i am still trying to perfect my layout i just wanted to post this as i struggled trying to find a way to set up p99.

I find that if I hit escape too quickly it'll stall at the unloading. So I wait a second

But if it does, hit the steam button then select home and you're in business

I think you have to name the game the same as other people to make it visible in community, I named mine "everquest p99" I think and the config I have is called slorth wip

I looked and couldn't find an import/export option, only to share with community, if you know of a way to share let me know and I'll do it. I'm an old hand at this kind of thing, been using the steam controller for years with just about every game

Hey! I just uploaded my gamepad config to the community tab. Let me know if you see it or not.

I can’t speak to how well it works compared to anyone else’s configuration but I like it for my casual play style.

Let me know how it goes and I’ll try to answer any questions if you have any.

Thanks!

P.S. I named my EQ game as “EQ Project 1999”

Thank you for sharing this! I never would of thought about how I named my EQ game locally. I wish there was an easy way to help us standardize naming when adding non-steam games. Maybe adding a pinned thread in the forums?

I intend to just make a duplicate of the P99 directory and put the games executable from one of each in order to try both of these layouts out

hey guys i am working dilligently at a button layout for this but i want to make it perfect and functional but easy to use. i have the joysticks mapped out what i would consider almost perfectly to how a normal two joystick game would work so far(left stick movement right stick camera angle) including a zoom in zoom out feature that just utilizes the joystick click. right now i am working on action layers for all the spells hotkeys and combat abilities after that i plan to make a radial wheel on the left trackpad for simple commands and the right track is a mouse

my custom button layout is up in community layouts! most of the basics are mapped just read the description and it will tell you how to use and what is mapped should be a very good baseline for anyone to come in and make a couple tweaks to get it how they like it! Its called franks experimental 2.0!

FYI there are a good half dozen community layouts available to use and check out. If you are not seeing them, make sure that when you went to add the non-steam game you added the file "Launch Titanium.bat" file. As long as you didn't change the name of the game on Steam after that, you should see them under Community Layouts.

My main issues with P99 on Steam deck so far:

1. My hotbar does not save after each time I exit the game
2. No music/MIDI

If anyone knows fixes for any of the above lmk.

Also, if anyone is interested, I spent quite some time in setting up a template for the Steam Controller that binds just about every in-game function I can think of. Haven't tested it on the Steam Deck yet but if anyone is interested it's available at steam://controllerconfig/everquest/2900007499.

Even though all the commands are named, it will take a while to remap all your in-game keys to match, so here's the relevant section from my eqclient.ini for the corresponding keymappings.

I got it running tonight! The original step by step guide was a little vague in my opinion.

Here are the explicit steps without handwaving the install part.

Step 1.) Copy your EQ folder from your PC on either a SD card or your Google drive.

Step 2.) Paste that folder into the /home/deck/ folder using desktop mode.

Step 3.) In desktop mode, open steam, add game, browse to your EQ folder and add Launcher Titanium.bat

Step 4.) Edit you eqclient.ini resolution to 1280x800

Step 5.) Go back to gaming mode, select library, tab to non Steam games.

Step 6.) Go-to settings, compatibility, highest Proton. Accept.

Step 7.) Look at the various community settings for controls. I downloaded all of them to try.

Step 8.) Launch Launcher Titanium.bat

Still unplayable at the moment, but I can move! I'll have to get creative with hot buttons. I like the 1-8 on buttons+dpad, then Ctrl on a bumper. Gives you 16 actions you can take.

Are you using bumpers for mouse clicks?

Triggers for mouse clicks. I have the bumpers setup for targeting. Left side cycles through PCs, right side cycles through NPCs. Long press to target closest of each.

edit: One modification I need to make is to use the layer of the grip buttons to change ABXY to be "quick" buttons for hotkeys/spells 1-8. It's not possible to use the radial menu while moving so I currently have no way of triggering a hotkey/spell without resorting to a mouse click.

P99 servers don't like Linux machines. You'll have to use a VPN if you're getting a blank list. Specifically you'll use OpenVPN from any service you'd like.

--- Follow this install guide but use the bottom method to get pacman to work.

https://support.surfshark.com/hc/en-us/articles/360019774880-How-to-set-up-Surfshark-VPN-on-Linux-Manjaro-

--- To get OpenVPN supported on Steam Deck

***** Step 0. Go to terminal and type passwd and set an !!! easy to remember !!! system password

1. make a new text file called "InstallOpenVPN.sh" (the .sh part is the important bit)
2. copy the following into the text file:

#! /bin/sh
sudo steamos-readonly disable
sudo pacman-key --init
sudo pacman-key --populate
sudo pacman -Syu
sudo pacman -S networkmanager-openvpn
sudo steamos-readonly enable

3. You have to switch the script to executable.

4. Open a terminal window from the folder containing your script, then run the following command:

sudo chmod 744 installOpenVPN.sh
(This is where you use that password)

5. Run the script to install everything from terminal.

sudo ./installOpenVPN.sh

6. Follow prompts, test VPN.

WARNING: These settings get reset on any system update and you'll have to repeat the 10s install process periodically.

You don't have to use a vpn. Search the forums for middlemand - there's a thread somewhere with a deck compiled version.

As an alternative - use your cellphone hotspot for the deck.

"Go look at the forums" is not instructive, at all.

My instructions above will work. Furthermore, learning to recompile a new binary and finding the associated dependencies is not trivial.

You're right, in both instances. That's why I said to use the search feature and specified what to put in order to find a link to a precompiled binary (it's the second result if you search for "middlemand").

Same here, and its what the last few responses are about. The Steamdeck in gaming mode is Linux (as well as desktop), and I've read about Linux users having difficulty getting the server list for whatever reasons.

It's been a very long time since I've toyed with Linux, but I'll give the instructions listed above a shot soon. Good luck.

Got everything working, but no servers at the select screen just like many Linux users complain of. Anyone experienced this?

As I said wifi gets a little wonky from time to time in the server pop screen try using a ethernet cable connection or reload the server screen until they pop up.

I finally got P99 running on my steam deck and I’m having a great time with it. I wanted to share my control scheme, as I have taken some of the community layouts and made changes for my own comfort. Rather than detail the specific keystrokes, I’m just going to write what these buttons actually do in game.

I am playing a monk.

Left stick: move forward/back, and strafe left/right
Right stick: touching the stick activates right mouse button. Moving the stick around moves the mouse around. It can be a little finnicky sometimes but this is how I look around and steer my character.
Left touchpad: moving my thumb around clockwise/counter clockwise scrolls in and out.
Clicking on left touchpad: F9 or change view
Right touchpad: move the mouse around, clicking on the left touchpad is left mouse click.
R3 (click the stick): cycle nearest NPCs
R1 (bumper): cycle nearest NPCs - I want to change this
R2 (trigger): auto attack. Like dark souls
R4 (back button): ESC
R5 (lower back button): consider
L1: tab, or target myself
L2: range attack
L3: jump
L4: Alt C - opens up discipline window “combat abilities”
L5: routed to 9 - which is a /hidecorpse all macro. Looting corpses in the heat of battle is a huge PITA and this helps with that
A: kick
X: sit/stand
Y: FD
B: activate celestial fists
Dpad down: mend
Dpad left: bind wound
Dpad up: forage
Dpad left: /g inc
Start (right side): open inventory
Select: shift+T, rear view

That’s what I’ve been running. Been a lot of fun just messing around.

wait until you figure out how to map more than one function to a button. almost alll of my buttons have 2-3 different functions depending on how they are pressed.

Are you using ctrl or shift or alt modifiers for the multi button function?
Like example:
left trigger = shift
Right trigger = ctrl
Left + right trigger is shift + ctrl

So you then just map things as key binds.
B button = 9
L trigger + B button = shift 9
R trigger + B button = shift/ctrl 9

Etc etc

Step 1. downloading the program

(mine is home-->deck-->downloads-->eqlite)

once you get to the correct folder click open and find a file called "Launch titanium bat."

And there you have it eq should be setup and ready to play on deck minus mapping your controls to the steamdeck controller
if thats what you want to use and that should really be what you are comfortable with!

the link you linked.... the zip file... has no launch Titantium.bat file.... (step 3)

traitor! Nahh im jk how is the ally? ive though about one myself if I ever get the money.

Hehe. The Ally is great so far. I was eyeing a Deck when it came out. I'm an MMO and mouse gamer, so the Ally (for me anyway) is not for all games, though it can play many more games than the Steam Deck as it's a Windows 11 pc in a console.

Been playing Diablo 4 on it. Perfect game for buttons. D4 has a TON of clicking I don't want to do with a mouse.

Some people on the FB group I follow do have some issues with hardware or software but that's to be expected on a first release.. easy to swap it out at Bestbuy.

I've had no issues with mine, but followed the guides to update EVERYTHING first.

Lately, the glitch of the day is the SD card reader gets too hot when you're running the Ally on turbo mode and some SD cards are then failing. It's a good thing the 512gb internal can be pretty easily upgraded to 2TB.

I don't rly see the need to have all that storage for the couple games I'm playing. I might try to get P99 running on it we'll see. The best portable P99 machine has been my Surface Pro 9.

For anyone finding this in 2024 - Launch Titanium.bat did not work for me, but using the eqgame.exe, startme launch option and Proton 7.x.x worked. Blank server list, however. So I used this which I found on the forums:

https://github.com/rtrajano/p99_login_helper
This code is simple and does exactly what it says it does.
Source: https://www.project1999.com/forums/showpost.php?p=3609110&postcount=37

I cannot confirm anything working in game mode, I simply wanted to play with wireless kb+m on the couch! :D

I also very specifically used /home/deck/ for the location of EQ files, as I feared permissions issues.

Also posted here for posterity:

If anyone is brave enough, the wiki could really use a "Steam Deck Setup Guide". It would basically just require someone copy/pasting what's in this thread, plus a little editing to make it cohesive.

I'd add one myself, but I hate dealing with WINE already on my Linux PC (something about my graphics card made it a nightmare). Now that I have things working (albeit with terrible framerate), the last thing I want to do is mess with it again on the tiny virtual keyboard of my Steam Deck.

Heh, I know; I have the Steam Deck dock thingee, so I can hook up to my TV (effectively a giant monitor), and I have extra USB keyboards lying around (not Bluetooth but good enough) ... but like I said, I basically just have PTSD from getting it all working on my Linux PC ;)

Awesome! Although, in my defense, I don't see it when I search for "steam" (https://wiki.project1999.com/index.php?title=Special%3ASearch&profile=default&search=steam&fulltext=Search); all I see is steam elementals and steam overload.

Could use some help if anyone has encountered this. I found some reddit posts about similar behavior, but no thoughts on solutions.

I was able to get logged in based on these posts. Copied a working P99 folder from a PC via GDrive, tethered to my mobile, got logged in. No controls worked, so quit the game via Steam (maybe this nuked me?).

I renamed to Project 1999 and was able to find community controls. But now I can't log in - every time I start the game via Game Mode or Desktop mode, I see (what I think, it's fast) a console try to run the .bat file, but then nothing happens. The button goes back to Play within Steam, and I'm back to where I started.

I removed the game from my Library and tried adding again, but I can't ever get logged back in. It's like it never starts.

Anyone encounter similar?

Same, just extracted the latest patch files (v61) and tried launching on my Steam Deck. When I get to server selection and select my server, the game is crashing back to desktop. I am using the native EQ/P99 launcher, not sure where logs are stored if at all. If anyone knows that would be helpful in determining what’s happening.

Edit: Found some logs, posting mine here for comparison. I see there others are reporting similar in Tech Issues, but no official word or fix yet. Most seem to keep trying until they eventually get in.

I managed to make it work. I had to reinstall the game and reinstall the patch as I messed up something with my script that convert files from upper to lower case. However, it doesn't work with the current proton from cachyos (20250702), but it's working with stock wine from Arch Linux (10.11). You have to make sure your wine prefix is 64 bits. I also have to use gamescope with `--backend=sdl --force-grab-cursor` to fix problems with the mouse not properly constrained to the window. Even so, mouse isn't working in the login and server selection menu but it's possible to navigate with the keyboard.

To recap:

- Change all files to lower case in the installation. Do the same to the patch files before installing them. You can use this script: https://pastebin.com/E07B2EeL. `cd` into a directory and run the script and it will convert all files and folders to lower case recursively.
- Use either p99-login-middlemand (https://github.com/Zaela/p99-login-middlemand), eqemu-login-helper (https://github.com/Zaela/eqemu-login-helper) or p99_login_helper (https://github.com/rtrajano/p99_login_helper). Make sure it's started and running in the background before running the game.
- Change eqhost.txt Host= line to `localhost:5998`
- Find a wine/proton version that work. I use wine 10.11 at the moment.
- Make sure the wine prefix is 64 bits.
- Launch the game with `gamescope -w <monitor width> -h <monitor height> --backend=sdl --force-grab-cursor -- ` as prefix.

It's very brittle, any updates could break it. If you are serious, you might want to have a separate system or use containers to keep it stable.

Sorry for the ping to the forum, but does anyone have an updated install guide? I have tried to piece it together from the bits and bobs here, but I have been unable to get anywhere with it. I would be so grateful if someone had a step by step on how to make this work. I tried the original thread and I get a blank web page when I type in the url. I'm not sure if the fact that the SD has gone through a bunch of updates has changed anything either. This is my first dive into any kind of Linux based system and I am slowly learning, Any help would be very much appreciated!

This is my first dive into any kind of Linux based system and I am slowly learning, Any help would be very much appreciated!

The way I got it working was to have it already working on a pc and then just copy the folder to your steamdeck in desktop mode, open steam and add the "non steam game" which is the 'launch titanium.bat' and then I had to force proton experimental (prob not required anymore); you'll probably see a blank server list - that's what the 'zaela's login helper' stuff is about - I just ignored this and I just run the game a couple times and eventually the list populates. Then again, I'm on a satellite connection and apparently a bit of lag helps this? If yours doesn't populate, I'd recommend going the zaela's route.

Good luck!
