So figured I'd drop in and say hi, I can't wait to play again.
I'm mid download right now and mid way through convincing my roommate to play with me :D
Anyhow I want to play either a warrior or a shadowknight but really don't know how to begin (this was always my issue way back when... I didn't know how to start).
I'd love the solo potential of the shadowknight class, and I think that it would be the best fit for me (I'm a night person). However there is something about the warrior that is pleasing to me... I always enjoyed playing it.
anyhow I've got some time to kill today and was hoping for an opinion/conversation about it all
also how does one go about gearing up/making money in the beginning in my last venture into EQ (when they had the free period for old subscribers so I rerolled) it was pretty damn hard to do anything

Welcome!
First few levels are tough. That's just how it goes.
Maybe you will get lucky, or make some quick friends and get twinked out.
Otherwise just assume you'll have to work for it like everyone else does.
I'd always choose SK over Warrior strictly based on versatility, but warriors
level faster due to the XP penalty.
Any way you cut it EQ is going to be hard.
That's it's beauty though, No?

It still is slow to start, especially playing a tank. You should be aware that shadow knights have a 40% exp penalty (just like all hybrids)
If your roomate decides to play you will need to get an IP exemption. (only 1 IP allowed per account otherwise).
Otherwise good luck.

My recommendations are based solely on my experiences within the last week, being new again for the first time in a long time.
However, I've rolled a troll shaman and gotten a ton of buffs + money killing frogs at the entrance (inside and outside) of Guk. Can solo here from 4-10 at least. All the frogs have a chance to drop rustys, mesh armor, woven armor, and low level gems. The rustys sell for a g or 2, the mesh and woven armor sell for more: 2g-1.4p. The gems are obout 5g-3p a piece.
I'm level 10 now and have earned over 100p this way. I don't remember earning money anywhere near as fast when I played back in the day. I can remember scratching together enough money to buy a piece or two of banded by the time I was level 8. Had a full set of banded by the time I hit 9, this time around.
Plus, with the high levels zoning in and out, you're gonna catch lots of nice buffs. chloroplast, hp buffs, clarity, and nice damage shields. Some nice IB mage gave me a 25hp DS this morning, I was taking on two reds at once. Felt like cheating...
Hope this helps!

we have independent connections through the school (on campus apartments), I'm not sure if this assigns an IP that is unique enough or not (I know we're behind a giant router on a corporate connection but that's about it...)

Welcome!
Regardless of if you pick SK or warrior you will want to save every penny for armor and weapons and look for deals. SK will be easier for you now but if you are the fast leveling type then you will be more desirable as a warrior once Kunark is released.
Good luck out there. I'll be sure to buff you up if I see you and maybe throw is some jewelry too!

I remember twink warriors blowing through levels, but seing as that's not an option I'll probably roll SK unless I really branch out and go with a cleric.
I've got no problem with it being hard, I love the game for what it is (was).

helps a bunch man, just the sort of thing I was hoping to read... I remember having a hard time affording anything when I leveled up as a paladin the first time around

if I level a warrior how hard would it be to find people to group with in the wee hours of the night?
this is when I have the most playtime :)

Might be difficult. I have opportunities to play pretty late at night, as well as pretty early in the morning on some days. Some days it's super easy to find a group, or make one on your own and fill it up. Other times, it seems nearly impossible. Right now there are not enough people to make it always consistant.
I'm level 14 for reference btw so this was trying to find a group or start one in that level range.

You should be good then, different subnets should be plenty of space. I'd imagine the only check they do is if they are matching exactly (but I don't actually know).

You should be okay as long as your roommate rolls up something complimentary. Warrior / shaman; warrior/druid; SK/Enchanter.. something along these lines.

I'm not terribly educated in the whole situation, but I do know that they try to keep the connections as separate as possible and the whole system is very very restricted

It does, and it certainly sets a nice base for a group to build around. Same time, it's fairly dps/utility light for a duo.
As a Paladin, I always found that my best duo partner was an enchanter or bard. Mana regen combined with slows (especially enchanter) let me heal myself effectively enough. Combine that with haste and the dps / CC utility they add, I found that I went through mobs much more safely/quickly.

true, but we'd be pretty set as a basis for any group

There are a couple good starting areas with newbie quests -
Qeynos area (the best imo) - Gnoll Fangs
Faydwer - I personally do bonechips to kaladim till 4 or 5, then CB belts / pads
Freeport Area - Deathfist slash belts (don't know much else about this area)

As acknowledged. I won't argue that with you.
I'm betting you'll find it to be a fairly vanilla duo. If you're intending to play with more than just the two of you most of the time, then by all means.

we're in no hurry, it's not like we have to hit 50 before the next expansion pack :D
and we just like chatting and hanging out in our vent server arguing about whatever nonsense

There has been a wave of these sort of threads recently (which is a very good thing, mind you) and I always reply the same way:
Play what you will enjoy the most.
If you are in it for the long haul to level 50, you'll be spending a long, long time staring at the same user interface and spell gems/skill buttons. Play what you think will have the best play-style that suits you. Also, don't be afraid to try different classes. Don't worry about what classes are over-populated or what someone tells you to play. Follow your gut and make that Shadowknight!
If you don't enjoy your class, it's going to be a miserable experience here on P99.

I'm the type of person who's an alt-aholic
I'll have a warrior and an SK and by the end of it I'll have a monk an cleric I'd imagine
warrior and SK both are up my alley, though if I can level a warrior with people that'd probably be my favorite :)
I enjoy playing in groups, it's not the play-style that matters so much as experience

I have to agree with Trimm.. Play a class that you WANT to play and don't worry about which is best for grouping or which is best for rushing to 50.. Enjoy the ride... Take your time and have fun! In EQ Live, I always played an Enchanter and monk. I love the play style and difficulty of these classes and so I keep playing them.. I tried others but never enjoyed them personally as much. So, here I am on a new server and I am playing an enchanter and most certainly will roll up a monk. I've thought about trying something else again but I am going with my gut and you should too! I say go for the SK in Qeynos! I moved my Erudite Enchanter there and hope to see you around (once I address my packet loss issue).. :(

I love both the SK and warrior class from experience, it's a matter of which I play first :)
I played a paladin in kuanark, then a monk, they both were fun but I ended up not really enjoying the roles and I didn't get good as a pally tank/want to.
I played an SK the last session and I liked it but it was underwhelming, can't really put my finger on why. Enjoyable, just not quite what I wanted.
I really like being able to dual wield and something about the pure melee tank tickles my fancy.

Never played an SK, but I do remember feeling very underwhelmed with Paladin spells until around 50.
Also, in order for me to do any more spellcasting than the occasional stun for aggro, I absolutely had to have clarity/bardsong going. Well, until I got my flowing thought up, anyway. I think the hybrid classes are more dependent on mana regen than people realize, given that they so seldom sit to med (at least, in a good group).
Bet my guildmates hated me for taking melee, tank, and caster gear. Ah well.

Hi all!
I am new to this server and figured this would be the thread to say hi! My friend recently started and told me I had to start playing.. with much reluctance I decided to try it out. All I can say is WOW (not world at warcraft wow lol)! I logged in for the first time and the feeling of nostalgia was insane. I really hate my friend now because I know this is going to be such a time sink for me again.
I have to give props to the devs for creating this server, and I look forward to playing with you all!

Save up your plat, when you get 6 or so you can usually find a high level to sell you a fine steel weapon or two that they would have vendored.
