Was the EXP penalty in classic?

I was wondering if the race / class EXP penalties were in classic EQ or is it just something they do for this server? getting 20% less exp just because of your race seems like a big disadvantage.

The races that have penalties also have racial bonuses that the non-penalty races do not.

Ogres - Frontal stun immunity and Slam
Trolls - Regen and Slam
Iksar - Regen, Innate AC bonus, Forage, Start with Swim (100)
Barbarian - Slam

There is even a race with a bonus.

Yes, certain races have xp penalties on this server and on the original live servers. Certain classes (hybrids/bards) also have class xp penalties, which are active on this server and on the original live servers. The class xp penalties were removed from the live servers around the time of Luclin, so the removal of the class penalties will likely not occur during the life of this server.

Trolls have good regen
Ogres have frontal stun immunity
Both these races (and barbarians too) have really strong stats for the classes they can play, and the ability to slam to interrupt casters w/o using a shield. These advantages are why they have a racial xp penalty

Iksar have regen & ac bonus and good stats, which accounts for their xp penalty.

Halflings have a racial bonus because verant f'd up on live and gave it to them instead of humans and that f up was replicated to here.

Classes have penalties because they have more power than a vanilla class, although not by whole lot and with kunark that got evened out by adding discs & such, which is why the penalties were removed in velious.

Yea :( I like playing a human. I love starting in Qeynos. That bonus would have made it even better.

I also love Qeynos. I never pay the XP stuff too much attention. I am having fun and really trying to avoid XP grinding and any penalty has never factored into my race ro clas selection nor has it impacted my decisions aroud who to group with. Last night I leveled up on my shadowknight and didn't realize I was due to level up. The mob died and I hear the ding and see the swirly graphics and I was pleasantly surprised. :-)

Clearly rangers need a huge xp penalty because they are overpowered. I can never find groups because they always want rangers

The penalties were because DnD hybrids had them and the Verant devs derived a lot of EQ's fantasy theme from DnD. So the penalty was copied over.
