View Full Version : Favorite off-beat leveling locations?

When I initially played on VZ, I was too innocent to do anything but wander around and try not to die. But when I re-rolled on SZ, I'd been to the top and back and started down a more "optimal" path with my Warrior. No more leveling in Permafrost or on Aviaks, straight to Ro, UR, LOIO, DL, MM, etc.

Now that I'm back in Norrath, and since I'm duoing with a friend in a decent combo (Shaman + Warrior), I'm trying to remember some of the good old spots, for various level ranges... Lake Rathetear, Everfrost at Redwind, etc.

What are some of your favorite off-the-beaten-path leveling spots? For selfish reasons, I hope to see some suggestions that aren't only for kiters but might work for my duo too~. This guide is nice, but I can't really recall which zones actually had decent camp spots and which were only survivable for a given level: http://wiki.project1999.org/index.php/Recommended_Levels_and_ZEM_List

For what level ranges?

When I started here, I did my usual Orc Hill and Crushbone, then those middling level 11-12, I went to Butcherblock and did the Chess board (no one goes there) and the related Orc camps and goblins, which are hard to break due to orc oracles.

Around 20 I went to Overthere and that is silly/excellent xp and cash. Seriously, 2-3% xp per mob, reasonably safe, vendor, etc. Why would I leave?

I bring that up because some have (accurately) stated 'no one hunts in hard low level dungeons'. Why would I risk it?

Qeynos sewers! Princess fairy in Lfay was good for a level or 3. Kill heal repeat.

Lfay is always dead but there always seems to be someone camping the sisters. Even on off-peak, when I'm normally on.

WW giants are awesome, easily my favourite solo spot for the 20s. And the chance of that ever-elusive Forest Loop makes it all the more exciting.

Skellies in front of Kaladim, turn in the bonechips at the Paladins inside the city.

Southwest quarter of Nektulos.

Damn near anything in Butcherblock.

Just outside Dalnir.

Mistmoore.

splitpaw from 29+, currently soloing 6 single gnolls in a safe kill spot for about 2% xp per kill, on a 22min timer so i can be semi afk haha..

WK Scarecrows i leveled from like 18-23 or something silly, i got quite a few levels off them, even light blue cons

Here are some areas in which I have hunted.. (sorry in advance for it being poorly organized.. I'll come back to clean it up later)
I did blackburrow until around 12 via the Gnoll fang quest.
Wisp Island (Erud's Crossing) from 12 - 16? Saved the GLS and did a turn-in to the gypsie in North Karana (and sold the book you get)
West Karana scarecrows from 14 - 17 (did these for their solo-ability with my necro)
Befallen from 12 up to about 18
Unrest 14 - 30 (yard trash first, then to pulling to wall in the back, then to Main Room, then to Fireplace, then to basement)
SolA low 20's to 32 Mainly on the non-castle side.. so foreman, predator, singe areas..
Upper Guk in my low to mid 20's
Cazic Thule I think from 20 on up to about 40? I've grouped here only a few times in my 30's.
Mistmoore - 20ish starting out front. at around low 30's doing the Castle Entrance, Grave Yard or Pit.
SolB 35 + Starting in the window room and royals..
Lower Guk (haven't done a whole lot here yet.. mainly the Assassin / Supplier camp when I've been here. Started here in my mid to upper 30's.

I have avoided the grind-fest places like South Karana, LOIO, Overthere, DreadLands. I did those on live back in the day and it gets old very quickly. I prefer the challenges and risks in the dungeons.

offbeat places to level: It's been a while for me ( and not active in p99 yet-- waiting on my eq box from amazon ).

But areas I really enjoyed : killing the sirens off the boat route from FP to Butcherblock ( right before you zone into butcherblock ) from like level 12-15ish--- They gave what I remember to be an abnormal amount of XP

Charm kiting in South Karana ( I believe it was south- where ever the griffawns are--- charm the griffawns and unleash hell )

The fisherman guy on the coast of the desert of ro was always fun from like 5-8ish with spiders inbetween

My favorite place to camp and ALWAYS completely empty was the kerran island with all the cat people. (Accessible off the erudite forest area ). Great experience and a ton of fun.

... I never went above 40 (alt-aholic ). So I'm a little limited but the above were always a blast.

Chessboard in butcherblock always intrigued me for some reason. The xp and spawns aren't anything special, but it was constant fun with a trio at that camp.

I was always fond of gnoll hill in EK on live, however it doesn't work so well on this server.
The aviak guards are a nice camp in lake rathe in the low 20's. Nice and quiet.
After you finish there, go and camp the hermit in SK.

Burning wood was a good zone on live too. There was several spots around the meteor where you could fear kite or quad without adds.
Unfortunately (as stated on another thread) nowhere is safe on this server. Mobs just path everywhere.

I've always had a soft spot for Steamfont. Particularly the mino caves. When I first started playing EQ, it was on my friend's account and I spent all of my time there. After getting my own account, I had a dwarf and never really went back again.

Once I joined P99, the obvious choice was to make a gnome and hang out in steamfont again. It's nice to be back.

At first glance I read the title of this thread as "Favorite beat-off...."

I'm leveling up in City of Mist at the moment. It's an obviously overlooked zone. The XP is great and I love the place. I think this is suitable from 35 onwards? As it's overlooked, you may have some challenges getting a group if all you want to do is log on, set LFG and sit there. If you log on, set LFG and then start actively recruiting those who are LFG, you'll get a group rolling in no time.
A plus is that melee can be bound in the City of Mist.

CoM is a great zone, though limited in the number of available camp spots. My own experience is that typcially, unless I go during off hours, the zone is full. You must be going at off hours most of the time.

CoM is amazing, playing off peak it is even more amazing as I would have either the entire entrances or the stables to myself. 40 to 49 went by here in a blast, only hard part is splitting the ent mobs but after that you are cruising!

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Misty Thicket - and I don't mean for guard farming, I mean for level 5 - 15. I take all my low level characters there to fight on the west side of the wall and am always surprised how few people there are.

I haven't been there in 6+ months so perhaps it is more populated now, but often times I felt like I had the whole area to myself. Occasionally a duo will be camping some goblins or something at most.

It's a great place to solo around level 10 as any class. Plenty of roaming mobs of all types and levels of difficulty, and I often feel more brave to take on tougher mobs under the watch of the wall guards (that is, unless somebody is killing them). When they ARE being farmed though, it's easy to scavenge some Small Round Shields and occasionally a Spear.

The abundance of goblin camps means there is always one open, and you have the opportunity to take on multiple spawns if you manage to build a good little group.

Anyway, maybe it isn't considered offbeat anymore but I prefer it over EC/WC any day.
