View Full Version : Classic WoW Hardcore
Anyone playing this? Hardcore server ruleset with permadeath. It's actually pretty fun- got an adrenaline rush doing Fargodeep Mine. Pays to be deliberate, tradeskill/quest for gear etc, and work with other players.

I wanted to, but have been stumbling my noob ass through p99 trying to get to 60
I might though eventually. Normally I always play hunter but that seems too fotm and ez-mode for hardcore so if I did it’d probably be lock or spriest

Beginning of this is actually pretty brilliant NPC AI
The NPC mind controls the player mage, then immediately transitions into a channelled arcane missiles on the mind-controlled player, into a counterspell. Now I dunno if the mage has the talent, but that counterspell can also be a blanket silence, on an opponent mage which is super clutch. The NPC then uses an instant nuke on the mind-controlled player mage (fire blast) to kill the other one
Genius accidental AI kills a player lol
There’s also a decent duel to the death (hardcore servers have a duel where if you lose, you die for good, which is why so many people are watching). Both players make some big mistakes (like missing frost novas, sad), but the mage happens to make more than the hunter

^ damn son, some terrible players in there lol
I play a paladin. The most glorious thing so far has been this: If you've ever played wow classic, you'll know people can be pretty skulldugerrous; they'll loot a quest item or node out from under you while you clear the mobs around it, if you don't see em or whatever.
Had a rogue unstealth and loot something while I was killing the mob near it. Whatever, happens. Few mins later he goes to kill something and gets an add. We're deep in a cave. He pops evasion, pots, almost wins, but gets struck the fuck down. I stood right next to him the whole time. Did I save his ass? HELL NO. What I did do was /e sensible chuckle

Yea, because there is literally zero customer service in WoW, it’s like the Wild West, everything goes. You can steal chests, train mobs, trick people to their deaths, go hog wild
Back in vanilla WoW used to actually spend some money on a GM team. No longer. At least it will be fun to watch people train and kill the hordes of upcoming bots, because anti-botting is also not enforced
In both classic (2019ish) and vanilla (2001) I was always a fairy honorable player. I played only on pvp realms, but never killed noobs, and wouldn’t ever try to kill someone low on health or fighting a mob. That didn’t mean I didn’t try to kill people. I would do it only towards people my own level and as a hunter I had a nice unique way to announce I was going to try to kill you by putting hunter’s mark on them ;)

I will admit though, I bet pulses are racing during one of those “Mak’gora” duels to the death on the hardcore servers
A bit unfair to hunters because there is a set invisible dueling radius and if you kite outside it you auto-forfeit. And forfeiting a “Mak’gora” duel to the death gives you a “coward” debuff which is 20% less damage dealt, -20% stats, and +20% damage taken for days. I like the theme but I have accidentally forfeited duels by kiting too far on hunter
Either way, once people get geared I only anticipate siphon life + soul link warlocks doing max level duels to the death. They were the kings of 1v1 with their insane tankiness and ability to summon and sac multiple pets

For anyone interested, this is some lore behind the duel to the death, “Mak’gora”. I had it shown and explained to me by a nerdy co-worker who was playing retail WoW
I had a huge crush on Sylvanas as a character, but I guess retail gone and fucked her up and made her turn pure evil, alienating both the horde and alliance who teamed up against her. That is why I believe in this clip you can see Anduin helping the horde char in his challenge of duel to the death, “Mak’gora” against Sylvanas
The thing about the lore is, you are not allowed to use magic in the duel (this obviously doesn’t apply to the game or everyone other than rogues and warriors would be fucked! Would be hilarious). But when Sylvanas uses magic to win she essentially loses

i casually mentioned this to my wife (whos first mmo was wow but hasnt played it in years) and now she wont stop talking to me about it. which surprises me a lot because my wife is not the type of person who enjoys anything remotely 'hardcore' and so the thought of her losing her character forever i figured would be an automatic no-go for her but alas i was wrong. she says she thinks it will make the game exciting again...and tbh after thinking about it i think shes right. as long as we make peace with losing our characters i think it sounds like a good time!
soooo i might be trying it out if not just to play with her as a duo squad. she wants to play a mage but idk what i'd play with her...maybe a warlock? or druid?
p.s. i know its a hot take bc everyone loves horde....even my wife....but i'm hoping i can talk her into playing alliance. gnomes/dwarves/night elves/humans > ugly orcs/jamaican tusk trolls/dead guys/cow hippies

Mages are one of the S tier classic hardcore classes. They have the most defensives of any caster, good damage, amazing escapability. They have a high skill cap when it comes to aoe farming, which I recommend she not try for first char. It’s like charming and super-buffing pets, very high risk, high reward. It’s not needed to level, as she can do frost for better survivability or even fire for better efficiency with a duo. Just don’t do deep arcane tree
Both druid and warlock are highly fun involved classes. Druid would usually be feral spec, which is like a combination of caster, rogue, and warrior, shifting into the mechanics of each on a whim. You can do restoration for heal efficiency but it’s boring, and balance is garbage, don’t do balance ever
Warlock is a pet class with dots, similar to EQ necro. Less survivability than druid, but if you get fast with sacrificing voidwalker pets for the personal damage absorb, then using cooldown to instant-summon another, which you can then quickly sac before it dies, ideally, you can get a second damage absorb shield. This makes the lock extremely tanky once every 15min. Which should handle you from one oh shit moment to the next

Alliance have significantly better racials and paladins > shaman for pve
Horde have significantly better racials for pvp, and no one is going to pvp on hardcore except crazy people doing that duel to the death, which I don’t recommend as some of these people doing that will be previous pvp champions with every consumable you could imagine ready to use on you. And there’s a lot of broken consumables in pvp, like things that instant stun or incapacitate. And if a player collects enough different ones and chains them they can lock you down from 100-0

Frost spec Mage with frost armor up is basically borderline cheat mode in pve
Every mob that hits the mage gets snared. This means all the mage has to do to stop incoming damage is….walk forward, and the mobs fall behind
That’s not even considering they can blink around and aoe root everything frequently also. And go invuln…

Yea I've never been a fan of horde for precisely that reason. Lock and mage will be rolling on the same gear, far from a dealbreaker, but something to consider. There is a 24 hour lockout on individual dungeons so you can't spam them. Druids are good duo partners as are paladins, priests, and shamans.
Just did deadmines. I was the healer, had a warr/lock/hunter/mage. Everyone's got stat food, pots, etc. The whole run goes swimmingly, tank was good and methodical. We kill van cleef and go to jump down to where Cookie is. Hunter doesn't dismiss his pet...... and then lands in the wrong spot and agros a bunch of shit. Everyone immediately makes a beeline for the door. Hunter about to die.... I have a Jesus moment and turn around to lay hands him. Warrior thunderclaps the shit chasing the warlock and he makes it. Everyone else is eating healthstones and potions and shit. Warrior is an inch from death and gets a BoP, and I bubble, and we all make it out with a sliver of HP (except the mage who didn't even look back lol, or help with frost nova)
Really fucking exciting, and reputation matters... which hasn't been a thing in WoW for a long time. Instead of the bolus of players you typically get on a new server, moving through the levels as a cohort, it's more like a pyramid as people die.

Paladins can kill themselves to put a 3 min invuln on another character
I’ve seen it happen before on the hardcore highlights vids. Some high level paladin killed herself to save a guildie streamer from a train. Was pretty epic and he even got choked up
She had multiple high level paladins though so it wasn’t quite as epic
Your heroic stories of the Paladin must have inspired me because i decided to make a paladin with her mage. I've never played a paladin in wow passed like lvl 20ish so this should be fun.

Paladins are considered like around A-tier for hardcore
Very survivable, but they have some downsides. A lot of their playstyle is just autoattacking, there isn’t as much stuff to “do” as other classes. Their retribution spec is decent damage and the best for solo leveling, but it kinda falls off at max level unfortunately when it comes to dps compared to most other class dps specs. Prot spec is ok for tanking dungeons but the lack of aoe taunt makes it the weakest of the tanks (feral druid and prot warrior are better tanks). Holy paladin is a ridiculous overpowered healer (and the reason alliance > horde for competitive pve) with borderline unlimited mana, but there isn’t plate with good healing stats, so holy paladins have to wear robes usually for the best stats at max level

It’s perfectly ok to tank through all dungeons. I just don’t hear much about prot tanks in raids

What he is saying is pretty much straight from icy veins and only really accurate at the high end, like 50+
Paladin is mostly auto-attacks but you have a lot of situational utility and oh-shit buttons. Kinda reminds me of EQ paladins in that way.
Prot paladins bring some decent AoE agro, but you have to drink a lot-- at low levels you actually spec in the holy tree. You can tank or heal even if you're specced in the ret tree if you just keep some gear available. Personally I leave tanking to the warriors as I feel they just do it better in this era, but pally healing is great. The cool thing is people seem open to having a ret dps, absent any other paladin in group. because the utility saves lives and salv is great.
Managed to get a smite's hammer dpsing for a DM group today and im smashing shit

Paladins are just fine on the way to max level in classic and can tank all dungeons. I have leveled multiples of them over the years and was raiding in Naxx as one for a bit before moving him to the BC realms. Just dont expect to raid tank as warriors are pretty much THE tanks for raiding in classic.

So basically like a paladin in EQ? I can probably deal with that. I don't really like raiding anyway...this will likely just be a duo leveling experience. If I do end up raiding, having a reduced role doesn't sound too bad.
Tbh the Heal focused holy paladin sounds interesting. I just don't imagine that'd be the best paladin build to pair with a mage.

Yes pretty much, great group utilities, great aggro, strong solo. Just not on par in terms of tanking as warriors. I personally switched to Holy at end game, theyre very very good single target healers and are much more sought after than a ret spec.

As you level, do not switch to Holy, you can heal just fine in regular pve leveling as prot or ret (not dungeons obviously). Since a Mage/Pally combo shouldnt be taking all too much damage if you keep the pulls to what you know you can handle.

Rogue is ranked high A to S tier in most hardcore vid breakdowns I see
Absolute blast to play, lotta escapes, still great in endgame, basically no negatives
Also a very good dueler for a high skilled player but I dunno, can you duel if it’s not to the death? I think you can, but it leaves you at like almost no hp so pretty vulnerable on a HC server
My first char in vanilla was rogue, got 60, got super into pvp (not as much as later on hunter), loved every min of it. Dream weapon would be a krol blade which is bind on equip so tradeable, but will prolly be one of the most expensive items in existence on the AH early on
If you wanna go backstab spec (sorry it’s been a long time), great weap is the barman shanker from BRD. Huge backstabs with it, and it’s a broken bottle so you look like you are coming from a bar fight ;)

I believe the ideal rogue spec for leveling hardcore is combat
Edit: also, don’t forget about escape artist racial. Keep it hot-keyed and easily reachable. Very handy root/snare break that most classes don’t get the luxury of
2nd edit: You can do a thing called gouge kiting where you have a mob snared and continue to gouge it which incapacitates it for a brief time, allowing you to regen back the energy to gouge again. Once you do this to 5 combo points later on when you have kidney strike, you can then stun and pile on some free damage. Doing this method makes the rogue take almost no damage against a single, if needed

I really want to give it a go and remake my old shaman, but I'd be very pissed if I quested the 4 totems then died not long after lol
Yea I'm on Defias Pillager. Healing derps is fun and all but I'm experimenting with rogue and mage as high-skill DPS-y classes. Rogue is nice being able to nope out of terrible situations people put you in in dungeons. Mage has that ability too somewhat but not as straightforward. Mage and rogue both good dps but mage has definite AOE advantage in dungeons.
Going rogue for now because the toolkit is just super compelling for hardcore.

One last tip that I seen a decent amount of rogues die to in hardcore highlights vids: If you go engineering, and use a target dummy, the dummy is considered your pet. This means if mobs are attacking it and the rogue uses vanish, once the target dummy dies the mobs will bee-line for the rogue and pull him out of stealth
Seen a lot of confused rogues die to this. Either that or vanishing and then accidentally bumping into a fire or torch, revealing them ;)
ok sweet thanks for all the tips and suggestions! i cant wait to get started! i made a solo gnome mage for when shes unavailable to play the duo with me. i got him to 10 and had 2 or 3 dicey moments already where I was less than 10% life, but you learn from it and quickly adapt haha.

I enjoyed classic release in 2019
I just wish that pug battlegrounds existed (it literally didn't, was all premades) like they did back in vanilla. That was the nail in the coffin for me
Plus I hated how much I felt like I lived and died for a shitty (9-10% drop rate typically) lottery spin after 3+ hours of effort in a raid. After a few raids of the item not dropping and me basically having completely wasted my time, it was hard to bring myself to keep doing it. I had ran ZG like 50+ times before I finally got that ring set that was Bis until naxx. I got so sick of running ZG for 2-3 hours for nothing

Wow I didn’t realize that the “coward” debuff you get from running out of the Mak’gora duel to the death is a 3 day that only ticks down when you are logged into the game
And the game will auto log you out when afk for a period of time so that won’t work

lol this happened in the Melenas cave with my hunter. I teamed up with another hunter to kill melenas and we were crawling through the cave. We get to a spot near some rocks where we have to jump down... he jumps down, I do not, because there were mobs down there and we would have been dead-zoned unless we created space, which would have agro'd more mobs. So he's meleeing them and I'm shooting from above. All clear, so I jump down. As soon as I land we get a hyperspawn, everything repops.
We manage to melee it all to death but he's at 15% HP and I tell him to eat "lmao I don't have any food". I go to hand him some of mine and Melenas is walking up, agro's him and brings another. He tries to run, frantically tries to jump onto a rock, and dies. Oh fuck, my only chance is to run. So I run up the tunnel and get a bunch of shit following me, almost die, drink a pot, almost dead again. Thought for sure it was over... luckily I'm still just lvl 8. I turn a corner and there's another hunter clearing down through the tunnel and some stuff is dead, but I'm still in peril. I turn another corner and there are a few more grell, but they are casters. I run by them and they start casting shadow bolts that surely would have killed my if I didn't make it out of the cave, turn a corner, and LOS them.
Got out of the cave with maybe 15% HP and got attacked by a nightsaber lol, but luckily it is green. We duke it out and I survive with basically no HP. One daze, a slightly higher level tiger, one additional shadow bolt, all would have killed my permanently. Had to go chill in the inn for a bit and change my pants. Hunter's last words were "Good luck man" before his soul left his body. Godspeed Survitor

I ran DM/VC last night (god those arguments are dumb) and it was a great time! I thought I should stay away from grouping or dungeons due to risk, but these guys were all playing like pros! we had no risk of death the whole time, ever. even when they insisted on breaking my sheep which forced me to just bliz the whole room down.
I found out that if you die you get to server xfer the character which has made me play with just a bit more bravery.
whats the dungeon after this one? Gnomer?

Yea I've pretty much accepted if I die it's going to be in a dungeon, but spending 100% of your time grinding quests out in the world is no way to live either. But I will nope out and quit the group at the first sign of incompetence.
The server transfers are limited to the classic era servers if that means anything.
For strictly alliance, Blackfathom Deeps comes after Deadmines. People are also running Wailing Caverns which is roughly equivalent to DM in level but quite the excursion.
DM/WC > SFK > BFD/Stockades > Gnomer > RFK > SM etc

It seems to suck to be a tank in classic hardcore

whats the dungeon after this one? Gnomer?
Careful, Gnomer can be a killer. The elevator in the beginning kills the impatient and Gnomer has a wide level range, the mobs at the end are I think like almost 10 higher than at the begginning
The other 2 biggest killers are there are casting into the robots that put up a magic reflect shield (they glow green, don't cast into those or you will kill yourself with your own frostbolts like other mages have on HC), and the dark iron dwarves who put down mines with deceptively large hitboxes. Those mines blow up many people
There's multiple ways to go down, don't ever go down the middle, it's possible to accidentally body pull the mobs up on the ledges who will run all the way down pulling a small army and wiping you. It's better I hear to go through the ledge paths rather than down the middle

Oh speaking of the magic reflect mobs it is very helpful to know what mob types do. Certain types called like pather or tracker or something related to movement can dash like rogues and outrun you
Vulture mobs can execute like warriors. Hydra mobs can thrash which is the most dangerous mob attack, like 3 swings in one. Some of the satyr mobs can put nasty curses up that stun every few seconds. Boars can charge which does extra damage, big damage. Basically every mob type has certain things it can do

It seems like the only real mechanic that matters in classic raiding is threat. Streamer JokerD got bonereaver’s edge (https://www.wowhead.com/classic/item=17076/bonereavers-edge) off rag because of course he did, assuming streamer privilege is why
And Karma comes round and he dies with it in ZG. Lol, way to give that awesome weap to a streamer

and i am messing around on a 6 warrior now because I was playing with the talent calculator and came up with a really interesting fury/arms flurry build.
the thought is that if I have a couple chars 10+ with tradeskills, that when a character dies it wont sting as bad. i'll just shift to the next highest alt.

You know, people always say this , but on the two years I have been there, I have never paid a single dime, had a ton of fun and found a lot of people to group with.
Even if this torta sheena thing man woman had actually been responsible for selling EQ to Daybreak, I would still play there.
Its a private shard, its solid, been up for ages and has a ton of people, its not like there is no rmt here either you know? since I participate in it 0% I dont care either, same as eve online or gw2 or a plethora of other full of bots, chinese and rmt farming circles.
That argument sounds to me like you dont want to live in a city because some people buy and sell drugs there... do you buy/use drugs? if yes, then it might have some implications for you, if you dont its part of the background.
To be honest if I believed or took seriously a lot of the stuff people say on the internet about x things , I would never have created a character here in P99 or the plethora of other online shards, discord servers and web forums , as there is always someone saying X, Y and Z sold their babies to the devil, ate human flesh, traded money for sex slave maffias and use their websites, forums and private shards for sub-rosa tor like sites that only pop up during certain times of the day for those in the know to trade in weird currencies and e-coins for all manner of things like guns, illegal drugs, hitmen and alt right or alt left virtual meeting places where you get access to all sorts of extreme videos, reading material and volafiles like quality of sharing virtual goods before it was shut down, access to special BBS boards full of classified documents, direct links to stationary or volatile IRC channels and even ultra obscure ftp decentralized sharing nodes.
I dont mean or imply these things do happen, but I am here to play a necromancer with a skelly that cackles when I suck their life and get the occasional plat, same as other places.
You really cant control such things and such rumor mongering (even if based in reality) is honestly again, like being afraid of drug dealers while living in New York, Madrid or Shanghai.
Just my throughts tho, the only place I would never willingly log on to play anything I might be remotely interested in is the weird cult like nodes , mostly from eastern europe that pop up on DC++ and related networks, those sites give me the creeps sometimes with their totally unfettered access to ... things. Yeah thats my limit, but a shards run by people with drama on them is just meh.
Cheers!

I haven’t watched the finals but I could have guessed a SL/SL lock would win. I said many times on this board that even in vanilla WoW, SL/SL locks were hands down the best duelers. They are just too tanky, it’s a broken spec for 1v1 and I believe the gap even widens further with gear

It was unfair in regards to the simps coming out to serve there players.
Ridiculous sports fans come to mind.
And OTK are players and can only trust the participating players that they didn't get geared up and hand held. If the OTK refs (player themselves) were GMs or Guides they could have monitored it.
Lets hope that Blizzard picks up on the amount of fans and makes something more sanctioned.
I guess you could say the player skill was still there.
I loved the mention of the tidal charm trinket. I had one of those. Lots of fun before it was nerfed and lost from the game. I never new there was sleep sand and did you see? No melee used the Green Dragonscale Breastplate. The proc even works on wand strikes against the player.
Payo could have really used sleep sand waited for the hunter flare to disappear and got his opening on the hunter he lost too. Oh well.

World of Warcraft Executive Producer Holly Longdale took to the BlizzCon 2023 stage to announce a new WoW Classic seasonal experience: Season of Discovery.
In Season of Discovery, players will discover new secrets by scouring Azeroth to find class-altering abilities. Tanking Warlocks, Mage healers, and more will be possible. The Season will launch with an initial level cap of 25, and upon reaching max level, players will be met with a new level-25 endgame! Discover a 10-player Blackfathom Deeps raid with new and reimagined bosses, mechanics, and rewards. Not long after, the level cap will be increased by a few levels, bringing even more endgame content.
Mark your calendars; WoW Classic: Season of Discovery launches the week of November 30. Keep your eyes on the official World of Warcraft news site for more information.

Ah so they are doing what the offshore (can’t prosecute) IP-plagiarism WoW Ascension servers did
A unique game mode where you learn random class-defining talents at certain level breakpoints. It’s all a slot machine but you can have some insane combinations, like a hunter with rogue stealth, warriors with warlock pets and dots, shadowpriests with the blink spell, shit like that
At least that’s how those servers were. Had a buddy who played on them for a while

The BG’s are pretty nuts on those servers. You never know what someone is gonna come at you with. And someone will be wrecking on like a hunter who happened to learn blink and frost nova or something
No PTR for Season of Discovery. That's pretty fucking rad. Metaslaves and wiki warriors get fucked; deep game knowledge and analytical skills about to get rewarded. I don't think the abilities are going to be random, they're probably going to be carefully designed. I might actually be able to play a paladin in classic and do something other than alt tab and watch porn.
Also potentially the lvl 25 cap is buying time for them to develop and segue into what could very well, eventually, be Classic+
I think I'd be more excited for it if it were totally random.
Idk it kinda feels like classic+retail bs being added but I'll wait until I hear more details before I decide if it's for me or not. It could be interesting but the phrase "tanking warlock" and "healing mage" being used to entice me is concerning. That doesn't sound fun.
Depends on implementation I think. If they pull off classic spirit, locks will be able to tank but will blow ass in some major way, kinda like how druid healers can't even rez, paladin tanks cant taunt and have to drink all the time, etc.
But that was always something that felt uniquely Furor + Tigole channeling their Everquest days and I don't know if I have faith modern Blizzard will be able to emulate that without truly understanding what drives people to classic.
One of the fun things about classic is how sloppy and imbalanced it is. So the fact that they're going this direction is maybe promising. Retail being the era of bland homogenization. The game with those changes would still need to feel classic and that'd be difficult to pull off.

From what I recall the seasons were pretty short on purpose, so people were ok with random. If you got a super OP or shitty combination of talents, you could only make use of them for so long before a reset
there is some information scattered about online from a bunch of different sources with class rune details. based on what i've found, it doesnt look like there are too many 'strange' builds. its mostly just bc/wotlk/new abilities that they're going to allow us to 'plug' into 3 different pieces of armor (chest/leg/gloves) and you can essentially choose different abilities/skills to put on those armor slots.
a few of the concepts look new and could be interesting, and some of them are just builds we see in the future like envenom mutilate rogues or chimera and exploding shot hunters. Paladins get a taunt, and a bunch of other really interesting tank stuff. TBH I bet they'll be the best tanks for this 'season of discovery' based on the runes. Shamans and Rogues look like they may be able to tank, but besides that I don't think that I saw anything super strange. Warlock Tank via Metamorphasis and Mage HoT healing through arcane damage are certainly the most extreme examples of 'super strange' so it makes sense they used those examples in the introduction.
I think i'll try it. going to go hunter and try the lone wolf (+25% more dmg if you dont use a pet) + all the sniper and marksman like abilities. Go for that straight up luclin era EQ/AM legolas style pew pew action! I just dunno if I should go for chimera shot or exploding shot bc i think both are glove runes so I can't have both.
