Guys I've got a great new formula for a movie:

A dramatization of history where either: The good group of white dudes, representing libs, fights the bad group of white dudes, representing evil colonial yada yada yada.

OR

The bad one-dimensional white dudes are defeated by some flavor of generic minority stereotype (powerful wamens, the noble savage trope, whatever).

Just take any historical narrative and shove it into one of those. Without having seen the movie, I guarantee it's gonna be one of them.

I preferred blade 1-3 to every Phoenix movie excluding gladiator, but that wasn’t really his movie was it

I’m watching blade 2 right now and while this is the least entertaining one, I loved these movies

I think Joaquin as Commodus was a major part of Gladiator. Sure Russell Crowe was the lead, but he needed an antagonist to make his hero arc real. Phoenix as Commodus made for a great villain and in history fit that character's description even if there were liberties taken.

For the other movies, I liked Blade films but that wasn't Joaquin Phoenix, it was Stephen Dorff.

Those other three are all classics that I find hit differently as I age. All good for a rewatch every 3-5 years with a different take away.
