View Full Version : Homesteading

Since this place seem to be completely sterile of any interesting topics, I thought I would throw out a discussion about something I'm thinking more and more about, Homesteading.
Anyone doing any type of homesteading activities? Animals? Gardens? Water sourcing? Off-Grid energy? Canning?
Right now we have a decent garden and plan to keep expanding. We are getting chickens this Spring. I wish I had a way to use wood to heat my house but right now I don't and the process to outfit it with wood burning seems like a heavy lift.
We hope to start doing some canning. Essentially we are trying to get to a point where we rely less and less on outside food sources. My trust for the food we are provided through the normal channels is very low.
thats bc i think there are like 10-15 people left on the forums.
I've always wanted to get into Homesteading. I think it's a smart move to get as self sufficient as possible considering the clown world we're living in.

Well ok, I'll respond. I live out in the middle of nowhere and raise cattle for a living. I heat my house entirely with wood heat. I have my own well for water (don't have any other option to be honest).
My parents had chickens when I was a kid but I don't. I have been toying with the idea of getting a few. I don't do much gardening but in the past I have done some canning. Tomatoes mostly. I've made some jam and apple butter at times.
I have played around with blacksmithing some but never got serous about it.
At one time I was thinking about making my own flour but...you know...laziness. It's so much easier to just buy flour.

Off-Grid energy?
This is possible these days but typically more expensive than many figure at first.
To be completely off grid a home needs a solar + battery system. Solar panels will last for 25 to 30 years depending on warranty.
For off grid regarding inverters: microinverters > string inverter
As far as batteries there are old school deep cycle lead based batteries. These are the least expensive way to go. The batteries need to be babied and don't last as long as newer battery technology. They last 5-10 years.
There is newer battery tech using Lithium Ion (like phones and EV) things like Tesla's PowerWall and a few other brands out there. There is a price premium for these batteries but they come with monitoring software for a complete integrated energy system you can see the energy flow of your home on your smart phone. These last 10 to 15 years.
I would guess that your current kwh rate for electricity is very low. Buying a solar+battery system is like pre-paying for electricity for many years ahead of time.
If you want any more info feel free to PM me.
Cheers
I don't think Colorado watched the leaked j6 videos. I bet the SC did tho.

I have a solid set of skills for homesteading, adding to that is my goal.
Always enjoyable when an Atheist claims the moral high ground and throws shade.
Here is an AMA (https://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/18ep7jt/iama_5th_generation_homesteader_ask_me_anything/) I came across awhile back from a homesteader that works to support his hobby. Some neat info in the comments about the loan side of it and his daily routine.
There's also a homestead subreddit and discord. I'm very jealous of people that can detach or at least keep modern civilization at arms length
And who ever said I was an atheist? I just don't believe in yours.

You are no longer someone that I want to communicate with based on a private message that you sent me that saying to me that you are a left wing troll and that I should take your public attacks on me not personally. I reject that.
Do not respond to me on these forums in any manner any longer. Do not respond to any of my threads if I start them. Do not respond to my comments. And do not reference me in anyway.

Here is my private message request to booter regarding the expecation of an apology which ultimately he refused. It was worth communicating with him in private first about his false accusation.
(private message - pm send from me to booter)
It was simple to see you went much farther than disagreeing with my post.
You incorrectly labeled me and accused me of something that wasn't true that didn't acknowledge two other posts I made within the same time period as your post (one with the same time stamp that was prior to your post and one eight minutes later). This accusation was wrong of you to make.
Are you going to apologize?
(private message - response from booter)
no, i still firmly think you're on the wrong side of that issue, or at least are not as informed as you think you are, and im not going to discuss that particular topic on these forums anymore in public or private
i do a drive-by on these forums for a few mins at work a few days a week, try not to take it personally, treat me as another left wing troll
To be very clear. I am a liberal. I voted liberal. The people that have attacked me the most visciously on these board are actually 'left wing trolls' by their own words. Those same people call themself liberal (see booter above). I am sickened by their usage of the liberal label given the behavior I've seen be exhibited be these trolls. I think Conservatives are probably unused to seeing liberals and 'left wing trolls' disagree let alone fight.
I find there is a difference between an old school liberal who has empathy for others in a MLK style way (how I vote) and a modern leftist that only views things through oppressor/oppressed categories and lacks the ability for larger nuance. A liberal cares about a wider group of people than a 'left wing troll' by a wide margin. A left wing troll will dehumanize those they think are on the wrong side of history. A liberal will disagree with them with discussion.
I reject trolling behavior from any extreme political persuasion. Including left wing trolls. This means that as a liberal I don't like booter's style of drive by attacks on other folks, liberal or otherwise.
I air this private dirty laundry one time only as explanation for my request to booter for No Contact.

Oh the irony of all the political talk in a thread about homesteading...the most un-politically related thread there could be. I guess people are really on a mission to take threads in the off topic section...off topic.
Watched a few youtube videos last night from one of those camping/outdoors type channels. Guy had an inflatable tent (was really a tiny home) with full blow windows, doors, and skylights and had a portable wood stove he setup in there with a vent hole for the chimney to vent the smoke outside. What a great setup to just pop up his own homestead anywhere he goes.
I plan on getting to a place where I have a home completely self sustaining and off grid. Its really more attainable then ever without giving up any comforts. Lots of solutions for solar electricity, starlink is taking care of an internet everywhere solution (because what's the point of being off grid if you can't get some sweat in your beard), rain catchment gutters and storage tanks seems pretty straight forward although have some things to learn about long term storage and water treatment for safe consumption. Seems like sewage is the hardest thing, or atleast the one I know the least about if you want something that mirrors city plumbing without some extensive waste treatment setup.
From there just get really good at gardening and you're pretty well set up. Personally not really a hunter/fisher so will need to put some thought into protein if I don't want to become a vegetarian.
damn more bans huh? eventually there will be nobody left posting here except the PC AI bots

People are trying homesteading literally because of the clown world in which we live. That is a political thing that caused the abundance of clowns.
Living off grid is getting difficult especially if ya need an interwebs for shitposting and power for mod-cons.
True homesteading is gone i believe, someone mentioned solar panels and powerwalls. Like someone else mentioned, that is paying now for 20 odd years of power. Unless some other homesteader wiff bigger guns come and takes it (assuming the shit full hits the fan that is).
You'd have to go back to little house on the prairie. But there is waaaay too many folk nowadays for that.

When that was just get a job and pay your taxes and don't kill or hurt people, I was on board.
It's creeping into a dystopian marxist authoritarian hellscape though with no end in sight.
I'd take living like the Amish and giving up the internet and all modern conveniences if it meant freedom from the thought and word police.

Even read some awesome information about fungus in Chernobyl that thrives in radiation.
An environmental scientist at work looked into geothermal as a power source for a New Zealand arm of our company (that i work for, not own).
The problem it appears is not the efficiency or power output its issues with the barrier between the earth part and the powerplant part. Incompatibilities between the thresholds. Now im no scientist but he made it sound like it was a NZ local issue, like the type of rocks/material at the interface.
Other countries like Norwegia (hilarious) and Sweden seem to have better results.
Also atomic 'shrooms. Harvesting may be a problem though. I wonder if the fungus carries any of the radiation in it or if it filters it out. That'd be interesting.

Credit actually to BB King in How Blue Can You Get. They sampled his line "I've been downhearted baby, ever since the day we met." The Boss wasn't involved in this one.

Anyone have link to an unhinged screed against backyard/urban farming?
I'd really like to confirm my opinions without having to think too hard.

I’m on half an acre now but was on 2 acres on the previous house. I found taking care of the grass and blackberries to be a PITA l (but that was WA state). Now I live in a red state in the mountain west, but property is so expensive compared to Texas.
With that said, I think I can sell my house now for $850k and take the proceeds of $500k and buy up acreage and build a home in Texas. Having never been there, I have no idea what’s good and what’s not. I’m kind of drawn to the area between Waco and Dallas/Ft worth because I think the economy is decently strong in that area.
But I’ve also looked at Abilene, Lubbock, and Amarillo. I prefer less desert areas, so Dallas wins there, but really what I’m looking for is flat, 10 to 20 acres, within an hour of moderate metro, trees and water.
I’d like to grow a lot of my own food because I think there’s some shit in the works that’s going to make getting a decent meal harder and harder to get.

Nice. Sounds like you've got a plan! When I sold and relocated from UT i was heavily considering Texas. I ended up deciding against it bc there's just too many fucking people over there. I picked a small town in WY instead. I'm still not quite to the homesteading part yet...but at least I own it and avoided a mortgage.

I’m basically in the same climate as Wyoming as of now, just got 12 inches of snow last night. The winter is so long I think it prohibits growing much. Obviously people do, but I’d prefer somewhere a little warmer.

Hiya.
I just moved and am looking to get into gardening on my balconies with potted plants. I live in a year-round sunny area save two or three months.
I was also looking into off-grid living but for now it seems my destiny is to be here.
Anywho, thought I would mention a YouTube channel I enjoy about homestead and off-grid living, maybe you'll like it too, if you don't know it already. Look up Bushradical. :)

Texas has a bunch of shitheads from California who change lanes without looking, I can’t imagine how bad driving in LA is based on the transplants here
I’m moving ASAP, I think I’ll be guilted into Colorado by my children but wyoming is a solid choice. Sheridan, WY is #1 on my list

Hate to break it to you, but we're everywhere in the mountain west, including wyoming. You're going to have to be way out in the sticks to avoid our mcmansions and yuppie shopping centers

Before any of us was born the important take away from California was well established.

idk, in my experience the worst drivers in the country have been southerners, followed closely by people from New Jersey and Boston. PNW has the best drivers. California is right in the middle, though it's a huge state and there are some differences regionally.
I think what you're noticing is the rudeness and general lack of concern for others that increasingly pervades everyday life... it extends to driving. Drivers seem noticeably worse than 10 years ago everywhere, imo

Look here. https://insteading.com/blog/underground-greenhouse/
Im sure there are other climate approriate sites around as well.
I live in a place where it does not snow every year (but it frosts quite often), but when it does it fucks everything planted so its more a mitigation type thing for us. Im sussing it out right now.
