View Full Version : Retro Console Gaming
I figure since we all love retro pc games like EQ, that maybe we've got some retro console gamers amongst us as well!?
If so, which console(s) do you collect for and what are some must own games for the console that you'd suggest others pick up?
I've only been doing retro collecting for a few years as it originally started with me collecting Nintendo Switch games with my kids,
and then running out of games we were interested in once we hit the 60+ marker.
So I snagged a Gamecube and an HDMI upscale convertor for it and went to collecting...
but holy shit gamecube games we're insane in price! i couldn't believe it!
of course I needed to get few essential titles like some zelda games, mario titles, mario sports titles, but then I decided to look into PS retro collecting...
SHABAM! got myself a backwards compatible ps3 off ebay like it was 2007 and started down the collecting rabbit hole! games are much cheaper for old PS games vs Gamecube for some reason. So I quickly grabbed a bunch of rockstar and bethesda titles + the Skate games (bc there hasnt been a good skateboarding game in 10+ years) not to mention the super rad ps1 and ps2 games of yore like Star Wars Jedi Power Battles, Champions of Norrath and SSX Tricky. Now i'm wondering what to get next?
So yeah if any of you guys have game suggestions for Gamecube or the PS12345 definitely mention some! and if you're retro game collecting let's hear about your collections!

I have an SNES, GameGear, PS1 and PS2. Haven't fired them up at all though, currently not allowing the kids to play video games.
I still have my sega cd-x, ps2, and gamecube wired up to a 36" CRT (tangled, dusty, and stored in a pile under the table like the creators intended):

I actually fired up the gamecube just the other day because I knew I could get the missile expansion outside of the charge beam area but on Prime Remastered on the Switch I couldn't get it. I had to springball bomb jump to get up there, but on the original it's just a dbj + unmorph.

I enjoyed the Zelda games on N64, played them with my sons. I especially loved ocarina of time but Majora’s mask was fun as well

It's called an emulator. Try google.
Emulators make sense, sure. But there is just something about collecting the games that I find enjoyable.

Emulators are bad. Holding the old classic controller(s) and playing on an old tube TV is the way. CRT will give a way better retro experience.
Find a Sony Trinitron KV-Series and you're good to go.

nah a raspberry pi + Xbox controller is the way to go.

The official "retro" consoles are also emulators I've heard.

The Trinitrons are nice, but really anything with a decent shadow mask looks great imo:

I got one of those retro SNES consoles a few years back, came with like 32 games on it but the hard drive was big enough for a bunch more, found copies of every game ever made for SNES and was able to fit almost all of them on there at once.
My favorites are the games we didn't own but rented from the video store as kids. It has the nostalgia factor of playing a game from your youth but one that you didn't know every in and out of. There is a great motorcycle/jet ski combo racing game called Full throttle All American Racing, one that I've enjoyed going back to again and again.
I think alternatively you could also fit all 700+ NES games on that size hard drive too. A little google searching was all I needed to find the files and tools to put stuff on the hard drive.

PS1 is my favorite era in gaming, even though I grew up with them all and was a little older for ps1, but I felt it was a high point for blending Western game design with Japanese game design.
You'd still get these insane 8bit wild ideas, but with this new 3D worlds.
Also the japanese PSX games are totally amazing. It was definitely my favorite erra.
AND to top it off games advertisements would have boobs in them back them.

Gargoys Quest on Gameboy was also an amazing adventure.
And god I love tie fighter/xwing!
Speaking of adventure games (which used to mean zelda style games when there wer eonly like 5 of those in existence)
The Tgraphix Neutopia was an amazing game that came out before the SNES zelda upgrade, and it was glorious!
If you like 16 bit zelda, i strong recommend you play neutopia!

I also loved Golvellius to itch that zelda scratch before it became a "genera"

Gameboy Advance has some really good titles on that I never got to play in era :)
Golden Sun 1+2
The Legend Of Zelda: The Minish Cap
F-Zero: Maximum Velocity
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance
Metroid Fusion
Castlevania: Aria Of Sorrow (think they made some others for it too)
Mario Kart: Super Circuit
Lots more too. The Switch might be good but the GBA is right up there with it for playability.
