View Full Version : What do you do with your skill points?

I never really knew what was best to do with them back in the day and still don't now.
I remember training archery with them on my Paladin once.. Didn't help as much as I had hoped...

I am thinking about saving some time and using them to up my blacksmithing.
Only reason I hesitate is because you can't get them back..

What do you all use them for?

They're really only good for raising skills that raise slowly on their own, or languages. You can only skill up to 21 (I think?) on any trade skill so don't hesitate to use them for that.

You can only train a tradeskill up to 20 or something. Skill points just sit around, really.

1 point in anything that needs 1 point, then hoard them like they mean something.

with plans to train languages one day then never do it.

If you're an INT caster, you can use them to raise Research to its maximum (getting it to 200 costs several thousand plat, though you can get it higher too). This is costly, but much faster than any other method and probably worth it.

Otherwise, I tend to spend them on starting up tradeskills and putting 1 point into languages. They're not really of much use.

For monks, I'd suggest saving them up, spending one as needed for new skills, then dumping them all into Intimidation (which otherwise takes forever to raise).

Sense Heading seems to take forever to go from 0-21 normally so I always use 20 points for that.

I use them a lot actually, but it depends on the character. Estu gave a great example above. For a low lvl monk for example I dump everything into mend because it sucks at the beginning. I also use them for weapon skills if I get a new weapon but my skill is still too low. I also tend to put 1 point on everything because I don't like to have any skills at 0.

Thanks.
Guess skill points just aren't that exciting. I will use them to get tailoring up if I ever get smithing to the point where I need padding I guess.
And I do plan on researching with my mage so thanks for that tip.

Put 1 point into sense heading to get it started (otherwise it doesn't seem to go up at all).

Then make a sense heading hotbutton or two and map it to your movement keys (arrows, WASD, or whatever you prefer).

Sense heading will be maxed within a few hours played time. Then remap the keys so you don't have you chat window filled with "You think you are heading ____" messages.

Just bind an often used key to sense heading, like left or right. Then every time you move, you'll sense heading and chance for a skill up. You should max it in just a couple days.

I dump a few here and there to bump up weapon skills that have been lagging behind (such as my 2HB, which I don't have a decent weapon for), dropping a few points into Divination (seriously, having only True North and a few other crappy spells with a longer recast delay sucks for raising it. And it goes up slooooow), and right now I'm sitting on a bunch of points so I can jack Alchemy up once I ding in a few minutes.

That's about it. Otherwise I just sit on my points and do nothing with them until I'm like "Oh hey I feel like leveling Smithing!". Might just save them for when / if I decide I want to do the Coldain prayer shawl quests when Velious eventually comes out to get my tradeskills upped.

You can only run trades up to 20? Has it always been like that?

Yeah. Well, I think it's 21, but nevertheless working as intended.

I sort of thought that I put 50 points into smithing back in the day, but I must be wrong.

Throwing, archery, intimdate, trade skills up to 21, lesser user combat skills... A rogue should skill up 1hb and 1hs, shaman should skill up 2hb and piercing .etc

I generally just put 1 point into everything and then save the rest.
