Banks are like our societies legal mafia. Most people keep borrowing even though they know they're getting fucked.

I make it a point to try and avoid them.
Sometimes you're in a situation where you kinda gotta turn to them
For most people this is at the very least a mortgage.
On the topic of interests rates, I do find it's strange how we call ourselves a free market and yet
interest rate manipulation sure seems like it's an underhanded way to control it. I know that's by design of course. To fight inflation! Eventually though the game catches up to us.

Student loans have very high default rates, even with what you call high rates, they are subsidized.

No. And I think they are stupid and should be illegal for anyone to charge interest.

The main problem is that the lending institution decides. They shouldn't be allowed. Also sometimes they change it.

Just adjust for inflation. The bank is already making money off the money they lent u.
