Long time TLP player, I loves me som raiding and grouping. Not really a solo player. I've narrowed my class choice to 4. My plan is to level as best as I can and eventually find a raid guild. Please provide your opinions. :)
The for classes are:
1) Ranger, 2) Rogue, 3) Paladin, or 4) Bard.
Truly thanks again for any info, advice.
Play what you love, not for power. If your main concern is getting a group, then rogue and bard amongst those are more desired. Rogues are pure DPS (damage per second) and bards are utility as their songs boost combat, mana regen and they can charm/mesmerize for crowd control. Every class has its pros and cons though.
Play one, see if you like it.
In the end, it's game, and you are the one who gets the enjoyment from it.

first char bard for sure....easiest to solo if you cant find anyone to group with but also super fun grouping class
join raid, afk manasong in cleric group, collect dkp, buy sellable raid loot, fund your ranger or paladin ubertwink

Yeah Bard by far the easiest if you're starting with nothing, Rogue would be the most desirable to raid guilds

If the goal is end game raiding then Bard or Rogue by far

Paladins and Rangers are the red-headed step children of P99, although that mantra has become waaaaaay less in recent years and pretty much every class is accepted.
Wizard is still shunned 1-59 and then beloved at 60

I'm glad I found this thread. I'm just starting up P99 after some 20 years not playing EQ. I've forgotten most of what I know about the game but in addition to the classes listed above I'd like to play something that both can solo decently well, maybe right in the middle, but is also one of the more desirable classes for finding a group. I never did raid much in the original game, but wouldn't think it off the table should I get to that point.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

enc / bard / shaman / necro / mage
in order of difficulty to play hardest to easiest...with shaman/necro being too close to call
and by difficulty i just mean skillcap...lets face it anyone with 80 iq can make any character function well enough to get by in groups
pick ya flava

Monk and Druid as well technically. Although Monk not really if you're fresh to the server since you need some gear to make that truly efficient (plus groups will then expect you to pull and know the zone).
Druid is a good option as well. Can root rot and charm kill (animals) and eventually quad kite (kill four mobs at once while kiting them - med up, rinse and repeat) while also being desirable in groups at least for the first like 2/3s of the game. I think around 40 is where grouping as a Druid became tougher IIRC...your heals just can't keep up with the content so it's much harder to be the main heal in a group.

If you want the best warm body Raid class you can't beat paladin. You sit there with the tank targeted and your finger over your soulfire
Waste the charges, get more dkp for getting a new one.
Then yeah sell Raid loot

Thanks guys, I really appreciate it. I think I'm going to make an Iksar shaman. Always had a soft spot for Cabilis. More than that I got some good ideas for alts.
So, I just wondered how the server is atm. I haven't played in 5-6 years on blue, and I kinda wanted a fresher start. My concern though is the group situation so far into the server life, and also me being EU based. Anyone got a take on this?
Somewhat wanna roll a rogue like in the old days, but that's kinda horrible as a solo.

green is basically in the same state as blue now, with a slightly busier xp superhighway
Yeah, that does not sound viable. Thanks

if you know ppl who play or can make friends, then you will get geared fast
i mean unless you really wanna do the solo-self-found thing, then more power too you
basically everyone who plays on blue or green (moreso blue) is sitting on 10+ bags of gear that they don't have the patience to sit in EC and sell
so like if you log in run around doing noob stuff, you will come across people who are like hey here take my stuff if you can use it, especially at peak play hours
or try going to EC and /auc WTB banded gear for a new player, I'd bet real money that people just give you stuff
ok not real money but I'll bet plat/gear on it, if no one gives you anything then I will :D

Drum up a bit of noise in the forums / discord / game for the days/times you expect to be available to play and you may get others enthused to start. You only really need a couple of other people or so to be active at your preferred times.

I too haven't played in years and needing something to play now that I am done with school. As a fresh green player and if I wanted to go rogue, soloing past 10 is probably impossible, are there groups available across the level ranges or would I get stuck?

rogue initially will be tough until you can get on the "Xp superhighway" which is just the most popular leveling zones
if you dont like the idea of sitting around waiting for a group or trying to find people because you cant solo, dont go rogue
or look for twink melees and beg to duo and do little pecker pokes as they do 95% of the work
