Hey forum friends! Been thinking about rolling a new paladin and have some questions.
Race wise I’m kind of torn between human and dwarf. Think dwarves looks pretty cool with a 2H piercer but their 2HS is not great. Humans on the other hand look pretty dope in their armor and has a nice 2HS animation. Also considered high elf for the ND but they look kind of wimpy?
Gear wise, I have a narandi crown on my SK that the paladin can use. I also have a fungi but would rather keep it on my warr for now. Obviously, a fungi is better, but how much of a difference would you say a ikky bp + narandi is vs the fungi? Was thinking it could float me to 39 and then I can keep divine purpose up and then use dw bp after 45.
Will have a cof and reaver etc a part from that. Been trying to find a magic 2H since I wanted to try lower guk and kaesora but no luck so far.

Fungi is way better.
As for race Dwarf has crappy charisma but if you think dwarves rock slap all points into charisma and maybe you can do alright with gear swaps for lulls. ND sucks. IMO humans are the strongest tied with high elves due to their good cha and wisdom. Erudites are the coolest tied with dwarfs.

Fungi is 3x the regen as Iksar BP -- absolutely huge difference. I've tried downgrading from Fungi to Iksar BP, and it's really really big difference, even at lowbie levels. Narandi crown + Fungi will get you to 45 in no time.

Fungi’s fade in performance as you get into the mid 40’s. Especially since the DW helm click 4x faster. If you have Narandi helm I’d be tempted to just get a DW BP for the root/heal duty. Not click-healing will be a major disadvantage 45+.
Reaver to Narandi lance is a classic path. Herbalist Spade would make 50+ easier as you are stuck with Root until 54 and after that Enstill has a max duration of about 1.5 mins vs Paralyzing Earth at 2.5mins. Having the npc rooted constantly would make for a pretty relaxed grind. Even if it’s going to kill a bit slower than the Reaver or Narandi Lance.
If intent on a Fungi keep in mind what it looks like on all the races. Human and Dwarf are some of the better options, half elf too.
Don’t fall for the CHA pitfall. Outside splitting unrest basement I never found it an issue with a nominal amount. Don’t venture into Guk or CoM, kill easy guards where a zone line is visible and profit.

Skip the ND and go for epic. Looks amazing and 2h bash is a really nice benefit since paladins don’t get slam.
I think humans win out in fashion but dwarven armor has crazy stats and fungi kinda matches it. My dwarf pally with pretty basic twinkage is at like 200+ str and 180 stamina unbuffed. Even at 55 fungi is still nice, between that and dw helm I never bothered with the dw bp but even still I’d always keep fungi and just swap in dw bp clicks if you want less downtime.
Human is better min max due to higher cha but dwarf will have the edge for the vast majority of your character.

I’m not a fan of a short pally but the weighted dwarven stats of STR/STA/WIS is huge for a casual player, or even a semi-casual raider. With tank gear any other race will struggle in comparison, especially elves and erudites.

I'll say I've enjoyed the CHA on my HiE because lull is busted on this server (at least for now). You can stack CHA other ways, but I enjoy not swapping out much gear to move around dungeons solo.
That said, as Snaggles points out, if you just want to kill solo mobs by the zone line for the nth time, you can safely ignore CHA.

I agree CHA is nice and it's annoying to swap gear. I just swap into the Kobold Jester's Crown and with the glamour proc on the Luminary sword I sit around 150 CHA on my human pally. That's good enough to not get many crit resists on lower level blues.

went human, max cha
no regrets
you're def gonna want the narandi crown, fungi, deepwater BP, spiked horsey belt (or better haste if avail), best weapon you can get your hands on, a lance for 55, lumi sword, deepwater arms, and a little cha kit
obviously if you can get epic that would be baller, but theres plenty of good options if that grind aint your bag...i just got soulfire
oh and dont forget stacks on stacks on stacks of kilva's 10 dose

This.
Except the Lance, honestly that thing is way overrated.

How can you say no to a lance on a knight? As much as min max and stuff counts, this is is an RPG at the end of the day, which means KNIGHT POKE LANCE.

The Lance is more underrated than CHA. Half the time stuff you fight ends up rooted while you click heal back up. That dot probably adds 600-800 a fight a minimum. Its like 4.5 dps on top of the 25-35dps you will be doing to the mob.

nah it aint doe, and if you dont want / cant do epic nor have access to big boy 2 handers via dkp its amazing
meni bang for buckaroonies - id take it over any other droppable really...the worse your gear is the better the proc...which if you're a a max cha human soloing you aren't anywhere near STR cap either
kilva's is the best thing you can have on you...that shit is like a NOS button...i always tried to pop them with a full mana bar / everything ready to go with some nice sweet broken up pulls...or ofc if you get a tough named or something to deal with

This game was a copycat job off a MUD that was based on AD&D, and it is the unbreakable law of AD&D that only humans can be paladins. As such, dwarf paladins are an abomination. They should all barrel-roll into the abyss. This is an undeniable fact.

hard agree I didn't want to say it but im pretty racist against dwarves in eq. The NPCs are fine dont get me wrong but I've had some weird interactions with the PC ones...

Great suggestions guys! Picked up a spade the other day so covered in that department. Epic would be cool as well, is the faction grind the hard part or are there some bottlenecks when it comes to drops?
Still going back and forth between human and dwarf. Leaning towards human but can’t decide on what face to pick. The eye patch guy is probably the least psycho looking one but feels like it’s been done before..
Reg the kilvas, do you recharge them or buy new ones?
Didn’t have a crown when I leveled my first paladin. I suppose divine purpose can just be kept up all day with it? While not full hp ofc

Vox/Naggy/Miragul used to be the epic bottlenecks. I'm sure most of that stuff rots nowadays on Blue, not sure about Green. Faction is annoying, but doable. The final turn in is also a bit tough as you need to get a bard to kite fear for you or sneak in during a raid to do it. It was worth it though for me given its probably the best looking weapon in the game and the only way pallies get 2h bash which is really helpful.
As far as divine purpose, I typically don't run it as I need the mana regen for other things, pallies have no real issue gaining hp between dw helm/bp.

If you're going to do soloing at all, go human for the extra cha. Recharge the Kilvas, its a bit cheaper I think. I have like 12 or so in the bank and do it one big batch to save on cost. Divine purpose is nice but it doesn't stack with Celestial cleansing at 59, so it loses most of it's usefulness then.
Some faction tips if you want to do epic:
Level in the warrens and save all those molars, turn them in Erudin, if you spend enough time there it will be enough faction for you or close.
Level off Neriak 3rd Gate cleric guards 52-55 it will max your priests of life faction and save you the trouble there.
