Hey y'all - just like the title says, I'm a new player looking to start EQ and I've never touched the game. I'm 26 and it's practically as old as I am. I have a few questions about rolling my first character.

Would an evil character be too much to navigate for my first character? Specifically, Troll Warrior/SK seems like the coolest class/race combo to me. Also a bit worried about the exp debuffs.

Could someone give me an idea of what grouping is like? Do people group to do most content? How long will groups last?

Will it be okay for me to be a first time EQ player as a tank/healer? That's what I play in every MMO, but I know some community's are very unforgiving of new tanks/healers.

I'm sure I'll have a million more questions, but these were the most pressing.

Thanks very much and excited to start the adventure :)

Hey, welcome. I wouldn't recommend a tank/melee for your first character as they're very gear-dependent and weak soloers. Groups are also going to be hard to come by at lower levels at this point, so a more self-sufficient class is a good idea. Necro is one of the stronger choices if you're into playing an evil-themed character. For the most part it's a very civil community on p99, probably more than you're used to playing any other MMO.

You might find this a useful guide just starting out, https://wiki.project1999.com/Newbie_Guide Good luck!

Troll shadow knight was my first char on live. It was brutal but really fun.

Necromancer can heal surprisingly well but no-one will shit on you if you suck at it at first. Plus they are really awesome at basically everything else except tanking. Lizards are overpowered and pet makes farming fun and easy and lazy and fast all at once. I second this nomination. And i nominate Shaman. They can heal and tank fairly well with slow and flash of light and their epic is pretty easy to get. Great healers too. Plus you will make a pile of friends if you buff randos you meet along the way. They'll probably even offer you free items if you're wearing newbie gear.

Being evil isn't difficult in the current era. A thousand druids (/who all dial) make travel simple and there is a guide section of the wiki if you want elves to love you or just want to know where the nearest neutral/evil merchant is.

Also, this is totally not "off topic" :p

Hellz yeah.
Some sort of brain injury that wiped EQ from my memory. A memblur if you will. Reset to my spawn point.
GO!

--- Apologies to people who have an actual brain injury and still remember EQ. ---

I wish you could have played here when P99 was new. It would have been so much better for you. That was back in 2009 I think. So you were like 11 years old when this started.

It's pretty dead now so pick a class that can solo. Also, take a look at Monsters and Memories. It's a new game in development that is trying to recapture the classic EQ feel.

Some kind of "can solo" class is good for a first timer.

Necros can solo and can be leveled without any items without too much trouble. That'd be my pick if I was just starting here.

lol when p99 launched in 2009 it had like 100 players and kept getting ddos'ed, I wouldn't recommend the very beginning.

It's also not really dead now, theres plenty of pickup group happening in the usual places but it's mostly people's twinked alts, which is admittedly different than a young server where everyone is leveling their first main

Largely a friendly bunch here, don't be afraid to ask a question, but be aware after 3 pages the original question and context will be forgotten and we'll be bickering about an inconsequential detail under the scope of a character with maxed out stats versus a raid creature which might only spawn once a week.

I just want to apologise in advance for each question you ask and you end up with such inappropriate answers :)
