Level 8 Magician on Blue Velious server. I have studiously sold all my loot as it happened and was able to buy new spells at L4 where an average spell cost 4 Gold but when I reached L8 I was shocked to discover that a single spell costs over 4 Plat. As I need at least seven spells this totals around 30 Plat and I only have 3 Plat in my bank.
I don’t mind grinding but can anyone suggest what I should do to progress from here especially as I am now faced with using the old less powerful spells on higher level mobs?
Any advice gratefully received.

I reckon it is intended that you are not meant to be able to buy all your spells.
You’ll notice lots of cities are missing a bunch of spells too. I think the idea is it encourages a bit of variety in how each class plays. Just pick up the ones you think you can’t do without for the next four levels - they’ll likely get upgraded and never used again :)

Young mage, the advice from Jimjam is true.
Fighting humanoid creatures is pretty good money early on. Skeletons are particularly bountiful with their cloth armor, weapons, perhaps a bag or box, and some minor coin, too. Goblins, gnolls, and undead are good hunting too... be on the lookout for a staff-wielding baddie, because that could be 1 plat walkin'! Cracked staff ganggg
It's rough out there getting started, but fear not, as a mage you need little other than your pet, a stack of malachite, and a fireball. I was always a fan of the earth pets for their roots and tanking ability, but the fire pet's damage shield is amazing.
If you don't want to invest in some backpacks for all the loot you'll be bringing back to the vendor, you can summon temporary 100% weight reducing bags (Dimensional Pockets) to lug the heavy stuff back. They are temporary, so they disappear not long after you camp, but hey, are trying to save plat here! Get one backpack for food/water/malachite and... what else do you need? Time to adventure!
There are a lot of spells that you can pass on at the early levels. You can skip every "rain" spell, every direct-damage-to-summoned-creatures-only spell, many of the summon: item spells can be skipped (do you need to summon a whisp stone?)...
Definitely get: your self buffs, burnout, bind, gate, invis, see invis, pet heals, damage shields, fire and earth pets...
And here's a fun trick for the early levels: give your pet a rusty 2h weapon like a halberd or scythe and watch the damage go way up!

when you get to like level 10-12 I recommend this quest for plat making: https://wiki.project1999.com/Bandit_Sashes
You get like 1-3pp for each sash you turn in.

With xxp bonus you'll need the extra cash. Might have to skip a spell level and just buy the best pet & nuke for now.

I'd buy a maximum of 2 pet spells per level. You can probably get away with 1 :)

That's a good point. I did a self found mage and yea there is 1 per level you can go with. I think the wiki tells you which one is the most powerful.

Thank you Sir. Incredible! I hope to meet you in game somehow. Surely a huge amount like that will cause encumbrance on a big scale?

2000 isn't overwhelming but probably easiest done at the bank :p

You have some tips on plat for NOW, but for the long run I think most of us have used this guide at least once:
Ultimate Leveling While Making Money Guide (https://wiki.project1999.com/Ultimate_Leveling_While_Making_Money_Guide)
And if you need to choose which pet to grab etc:

I think on my Mage I went fire pet, then boosted fire pet with the torch, and eventually I think by like level 40 I want to say I switched to a boosted earth pet because fire got too squishy?
