View Full Version : Uthgard (DAOC)

Hey all,
Is there anyone here playing or would be interested in playing DAOC on Uthgard?
I'm starting a new P99 DAOC Project, in Midgard this time around, and I'm trying to see if and how many people would be interested.
I'm personally a vet of that server, as well as DAOC in general, there is lots of PVP held on a daily basis with a large population despite what you may have heard from other sources.
Most of my active friends are already in mid-high 40s, and some just started a couple of days ago and already creeping up to 20s. Solo progression can be slow and isn't as rewarding as it is in EQ, but Group progression can take you much much further, in PVE and PVP both.
While most people wait until 50 to PVP, that's not how we do it. Our group PVP starts in low 20s, as we gank players up to 10-15 levels above us, its been done people! XP gained from PVP is also quite amazing, it makes for a much faster progression up the level ladder.
Here's some info I posted about the server earlier if anyone is interested or wants to give this a shot, let me know.
http://www.project1999.org/forums/showthread.php?t=27688
My chars in Midgard are: Scrooge, 50 Skald; Jako, 49 Healer; Ceares, 41 Shaman; Spazz, 44 Spiritmaster. But if enough of you guys are willing to start a new group together, I'd make a new character to show you all what the game is all about, pve and PVP wise!

yea i started a hunter, love the ranger in this game, but i can never lvl the guy, so wanted to try a hunter, figuring it was like the one in wow, and it sounds like blizzard stole the hunter idea from daoc, someone told me to try sm, and enjoy the class very much

Well, if you are planning to play a caster in DAOC, there are some things you should know. Unlike EQ, you cannot "channel" spells through being hit, there are ways around it though, like the Quick-Cast ability which all casters receive at level 5, as well as some RA (AA) abilities you can get through PVP. This is one of the reasons why playing a caster in DAOC can be much harder than EQ, but at the same time more rewarding in PVP, especially if you know what you're doing.
DAOC has its own special abilities for every class, some shared some unique, much like the AA system of EQ, but the points in DAOC can only be obtained through PVP exclusively.
If we can get atleast 4+ people interested in playing together, we can build a very nice group. I'm not a fan of "setup groups", I'd much rather prefer people play what they want to play, but my suggestion would be to start with a melee based group to get the grasp of the game (and the server), atleast for the first PVP tour.
Here are some decent sites which explain what the Midgard classes are all about:
List of Midgard Classes - Allakhazam (http://camelot.allakhazam.com/db/class.html?realm=Midgard)
Claasses of Camelot (http://www.classesofcamelot.com/) - Old School site with various types of info, useful especially for its Realm Ability (DAOC AA) Calculator Tool
Character Builder (http://web.archive.org/web/20080714084109/http://daoc.catacombs.com/cbuilder.cfm) - This here is a tool which allows you to see what abilities (spells/styles) you can achieve with different specs at different levels

Also, a hunter is more of a solo type of class, a stealther type in this game. They do get some cool abilities on top of being able to use a bow and spear (the only class in Mid that can), but I'd suggest you try a melee for a first PvP char.
Berserkers are THE melee DPS class of Midgard, right there along with Savages. Berserkers and Savages can both dual wield, but Savages are more along the lines of a Beastmaster without a pet. Berserkers also get this cool ability of going into a berserker rage and turning into half-man-half-bear, allowing them to have a 100% chance to crit with both melee weapons every single hit for a short time. One of the coolest burst-dps abilities in the game, and unique to the Berserker alone!
Savages get some really cool insta-cast ablities though, like haste, dps buff, melee resistance buffs (crush, slash, thrust), and even evade/parry buffs. All these buffs last 15 seconds, and come with a price (they eat a small % of your health when they expire), but are extremely useful in PvP and PVE both.
If anyone here ever followed Norse Mythology, this is what Midgard as a whole is based on.
Thanes are basically descendants of Thor and Odin, they are melees with the power of lightning, they can cast some really neat and powerful spells and at the same time play the role of the tank of the group. Though they are restricted to using Medium Shields, they also get some self buffs which include a self Strenght and Con (Sta) buff, and a Damage Add buff (melee damage enhancer, unresistable).
Warriors are just like they are in EQ, the Main Tank of the realm, and because they are the pure tank, their melee damage table is through the roof much like it is in EQ. They are able to use every type of weapon, and Large Shields, which can block up to 3 targets at once! Like if say 3 players are attacking the Warrior from the front and he has a shield up, he has a chance to block attacks from all 3!
Skalds are the "bards" of the realm, with the best run speed chants, damage add chants, heal song, and a couple of instant-cast DDs. However, their CC ability is very limited, its insta-cast but restricted to a single target with a 30 second recast, they also get instant snare with a very decent range. Every group must have atleast one of these! Speed is a big thing in fast-paced pvp.
Shamans are the main buffers in Midgard, they get the best buffs and some decent healing abilities as well, and a really cool regen spell. They also get some mean DoTs/AE Dots, Disease, and single-target and AOE Roots.
Healers are the main healer class in Midgard, they are also the main CC class in the realm so it is essential to have 1-2 Healer in a full 8-man group, with one Healer being the CCer and the other being the actual Healer.
Depending on how one specs a class, two players can be the same class yet have completely different abilities. This is one of those games that makes you choose between abilities and spells!

OK, so this is what we have and need so far:
Skald (hybrid melee/speed/songs) - Varrius (Scrooge), L4 Skald;
Healer (aug-buffer/healer) - Vorhal, L4 Healer;
Healer (buffer/healer/CC) -
Shaman (buffer/healer/dotter) -
Berserker (melee dps) -
Savage (melee dps) - Grendell, L17 SVG;
Thane (hybrid tank) -
Warrior (pure tank) -
-------------
Spiritmaster - Vilcrist, L17 SM (bakkily);
Runemaster - Grendlalike, L14 RM;
Bonedancer -
Let me know what you guys want to try and char name, and this way we can see what we can start with. I'm planning on starting this group tonight around 7-8pm EST.
We can also meet on P99's IRC at: irc.eqemulator.net, #uthgard. I'll be there.

I would really like to try this out as well, but I think this is a bit advanced for newer players, hence why I'd like to build a melee pvp group first, to show everyone the ropes and get the group working together before we try the more advanced groups.
Maybe we should make a bomber group, but I think it requires some prior knowledge of the game and the server in order for it to work properly.
Let's meet on IRC and talk about what classes we can make for the group guys: irc.eqemulator.net:6667, #uthgard.

We're going for a Dwarf exclusive group! Just letting you guys know, if you're making a char, try to make it a dwarf or kobold!
Me and the healer are nearly lvl 4 now, our names are Varrius (me) and the healer (Vorhal). We've stopped progress until tomorrow. I highly suggest you guys do every noob quest you can find, its easy XP and decent items, fastest trek to level 5 to get your class promotion!

RvR isnt my thing.... just turns into a pretty big zergfest.
Unlike EQ pvp where you fight small groups over spawns etc, in DAOC you are fighting zergs over keeps in designated pvp areas.
Again, not my thing.

This is completely false. I Played daoc for 7+ years, and there has ALWAYS been an 8v8 community. DAoC basically has three types of players. The solo type player who is always choosing to 1v1 on a stealth class (nightshade, infiltrator, shadowblade, etc), the zerg-type player who doesn't know alot about the game and is more casual, and then you have the group v group type player who knows alot about the mechanics of the game, and is more of a serious player. That's what made daoc so good. There was a community within the game itself for every type of player.. everything wasn't just "let's go zerg this keep with 80+ albions". If you believe this then you really didn't play the game.

There is very little zerging on Uthgard, and it only happens once in a while, not every single day. Most of the time its group vs group or small group skirmishes, which makes it really fun as it becomes more about skill than who spams what faster.
Our group started up last night, we're just lvls 4-5 now, and our allies (around 10 players) are in mid-teen levels. If anyone wishes to try DAOC and likes to PvP along with skilled players, now is the time to give it a go!
Let us know here or on IRC if you would be interested. Even if we are slightly ahead in level, we'll do what we can to help you group and catch up to the main crew.
Cya in game!

Actually, Midgard just happens to be the underdog these days. You can see all that info on Uthgard's Herald, where all the stats and info about the server are updated in semi-real time.
I'll try to post some screenies of our group, I predict we'll be in PVP by Friday, maybe Saturday at latest.

RvR maps are setup the way they were in Classic DAOC, so I'm not sure what you mean by that. As for classes being bugged, can you be more specific? I know some classes aren't implemented but other than that, but I haven't seen any actual bugs in any of the 3 realms.

Everyone who is playing Uthgard with us, make sure you install the proper MODs through DAOC Portal, in order to adjust certain Crafting algorithms as well as the original PvP areas back to their classic states.
http://uthgard.net/index.php?option=com_remository&Itemid=68&func=select&id=2&lang=en
It's very straight-forward, download the patch files (.dmm extension) you need, then create a "Mods" folder within your DAOC Portal root folder, and place the .dmm files inside the "Mods" folder you've just created. Then open DAOC portal, click on Client, then Mod Manager, then check the Mods you wish to install and let it run.
The entire process takes no more than 5 minutes and ensures Uthgard functions like it should even with modern client versions.

Few questions:
What do you gain from pvp. Xp? Char advancement of some kind?
What do you lose from pvp. XP? items? corpse runs?
Is there potential for grief?
Can you get into the main lands and gank or is it frontier pvp only?

Few questions:
What do you gain from pvp. Xp? Char advancement of some kind?
XP, coin, and realm points (RP). RP can be used to purchase special realm abilities (RAs) which are super powerful and usually centered around PvP.
What do you lose from pvp. XP? items? corpse runs?
Nothing other than the time to run back to the fight.
Is there potential for grief?
The only thing I can really think of is Darkness Falls. But you can't really "grief" in DAoC considering that it's realm vs. realm warfare. You can be the guy who camps the entrance to DF picking off dudes 40 levels lower than you, but really it's just kind of expected.
Can you get into the main lands and gank or is it frontier pvp only?
Nah, the "mainlands" are safe from PvP. However, the best dungeon in the game (for experience and loot) is open to only one realm at a time (depending on who is doing the best in the frontier). When access switches, pvp occurs (Darkness Falls). There are also battlegrounds you can join until you level up to max for the frontiers.

I always wanted to try DAOC, but the idea that there is no world pvp is a little bit of a turn off. I've played games with specific battlegrounds/areas for pvp and it just isn't the same as being able to be ganked or gank anywhere like EQ.

I'll make a Dwarf berserker. What should I put my points in?
These days, the char creation spreads them by default into STR and CON (HP/STA equivalent), however, at the bottom if you hit "Adjust Stats" you can make them whatever you need it to be. I'd go with 15 STR and 10 CON, or 10 STR 10 CON 10 QUI.
It has the primary stats highlighted like EQ does but after 10 points in any one stat, each additional point takes 2! So 15 STR would take up 20 pts, but if you spread them equally into 3 different stats, you can get 10 of each. It's all about preference, personally I dont think 5 STR is that big a deal, some people might disagree.

I always wanted to try DAOC, but the idea that there is no world pvp is a little bit of a turn off. I've played games with specific battlegrounds/areas for pvp and it just isn't the same as being able to be ganked or gank anywhere like EQ.
I can relate to that, for a long time I was a big fan of FFA PVP (not just in EQ) also, still am. Though after a while of trying to find the ideal EQ PVP server, run by the ideal Devs and Admins, it just seems like a never ending cycle of bullshit.
This DAOC experience we got going, is kinda like the middleground between FFA and the completely restricted, instanced PVP (WoW/Warhammer style). Why? Because the best XP and Loot, mostly comes out of zones where PvP is ENABLED, and none of those zones are instanced.
The most dangerous PvP zones in the game, give upwards of 80% XP bonus, it takes balls to go into enemy territory knowing they can wipe you much easier when you're lvl 30 as opposed to lvl 50. Some people like playing safe behind some kind of layer of protection, that's not us (hence why we left that other guild that was mentioned in previous posts).
In fact, the only instanced zones on Uthgard are the ones made specifically for QUESTING, and the people who enjoy doing things like that between times of PvP or just to improve themselves further. After all, if the PVE [environment] is harsh enough, it can challenge even the most hard-core of PvPers, wouldnt you agree?

I have the best crafted 2h hammer in the game. Well 2nd best or whatever cause it's 99% instead of 100% I think. But still I wreck shit.
Oh and as for the purists, Uthgard is not completely classic by any means. They sort of pick and choose what to implement on the server and honestly it's better for it. For example it's old frontiers, but some later expansion classes are enabled. There's even some custom high end content (Tajendi) where some of the best items come from.

Each wepon spec gives you not only different weapon styles but also access to different weapon damage types. For example, a Spear can have 2 damage types, it can have a Thrurst or Slash. Hammers can only crush, Axes and Swords can only Slice, H2H (Savages only) can have Thrust AND Slash both at the same time on different weapons.
There are also Armor type which coincide with the Weapon Types, with each having an advantage and/of weakness towards another, almost literally as it would in the real medeival world.

Sure, there's the Spiritmaster, has very interesting spec styles including the strongest pbaoe in the game, however most people spec in Summoning for easier leveling.
Hunter (usually considered a solo pvp class, can be hard to find xp grps with one but its def a solid class if you spec it like a melee. That's what one of our members is doing, he's got 23 Dwarf Hunter specced all the way in Spear and a little in Bow, that gets self buffs and most importantly for pvp....insta-cast pet!
Bonedancers are another pet class, however it's not fully functional in that some pets arent implemented (the class can usually run 3 pets at once), but other than that its complete.

You could just spec AUG to level easier, aug healers are stronger than they seem. Don't forget that you get a free single respec at 20 and 40. So you can lvl with AUG until 20, then respec to PAC, and you're set for pvp.
DAOC Character Planner (http://web.archive.org/web/20080714084109/http://daoc.catacombs.com/cbuilder.cfm) - you can basically plan your spec ahead of time and see what you can get with various combinations of spells from different specs as well.

Hey I must've missed your second post or something, our crew is basically melee-heavy atm, you can play caster if you want but I wouldnt recommend it.
Also pets arent as good as they are in EQ, unless charmed, the summoned pets are basically always 80% of the player's level. So a lvl 50 Spiritmaster for example, would have a lvl 40-42 pet.
You can also go here (http://web.archive.org/web/20080714084109/http://daoc.catacombs.com/cbuilder.cfm) to see what kind of spells every class has and plan your char ahead of time etc.

I tried this about 2 years ago. It was fun but the graphics for one of hte cities wouldn't load and I kept falling through the parts that didn't load. I quit and lost the installation.
How large is the installation again? I seem to remember having to download several hundred MBs, then having to patch it for another 2 to 3 GBs. I'm on DSL and can download speed is only about 92 KB/s at best. It's a pain. I need to start using DVDs to backup sh** because I hate this download/redownload routine.
I upgraded my system in sept 2010. God, it has been almost a year. TIME #%!!@# FLIES. This system is used but it has done me well so far. Only bad thing is having to oil the cpu fan. Anyway, with a better system I'm sure that I would enjoy the DAOC classic server more than I did then. (old computer was circa 2000 tech)
I never tried DAOC in its prime. I've always felt bad about that.
There's so much to play in this world. It has made me believe there're a trillion trillion different ways to make any game and a trillion trillion ways to do it wrong. This universe is complex. I'm just 1 person. There're almost 7 billion years worth of human experience in the past year. I just represent 1 of those years.

Effectiveness of a melee/bow spec Hunter:
http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/6789/l30hunterxp.jpg
Despite what most people think, Hunters can be VERY nice DPS and can solo really well too! Check out the health of the named before it even gets to me, from bow damage, and that's not even full Bow spec! I can even take down orange cons with ease without even having to use my summoned pet, it's so damn nice I was even thinking of making a hunter of my own!
For those who don't know, Hunters get this ability called Critical Shot which gives a 100% chance to crit on the first shot as long as the target isn't damaged yet, the damage potential is % based and increases the higher you spec in Bow. Hunters also get some nice utility spells such as: Self-AF Buff, Self-Dex/Qui Buff (Bow and Spear damage both rely on DEX just like EQ, while QUI is how fast you can attack and shoot arrows, it actually lowers the delay quite significantly), Summonable Pet - 80% of Hunter's level, and....the ability to Charm Animals and Insects! And unlike most other classes, these Charm abilities though very limited are also permanent - meaning it won't randomly break on you!
If anyone wanted to play a Ranger type class within our crew, go for it! You won't be disappointed.

Hello,
We are starting a caster group aka many casters and some healing classes.
Me and Scrooge are near lvl 8-10, this combination of classes could be pretty fun. Not so long ago I played duo Spiritmasters with a friend of mine on Battlegrounds, Spiritmaster- a class who has a pet that blocks hits for you and stuns enemies so you can still cast if you know when to cast. Also spiritmasters Darkness spec has Lifedrain spell, wich is darn nice. 2 vs 4-5 enemies was easy.
But if some of you do want to join us then any class is welcome.
Will try to help on my side how much i can with gear and other info in game.
Who is interested can ask more info from us about classes, there are more then just Spiritmasters :P
Best of luck,

We had a decent group of people playing together at first, and over the period of several weeks most just disappeared for no reason despite us being active on a daily basis. There was a bunch of people who posted in this thread saying they would play or join the gang, yet only several people actually followed through, and not for very long either. It's a shame too, cause the pvp was really fun for those who made it to 25+, hell we'd even take our lowbies on our runs to let them have some fun with us!
I was running XP and PvP groups any time I was around. Me Along with Kvasir the thane, are both lvl 36, but stopped playing for now since there's not much point in going up the ladder with just us 2. We've done that way too many times already.
If there is enough interest from players who actually want to play the game and not just say they do, for group pvp, who want to progres up in the game through pve and pvp together, we might take another shot at it.

If so, I'll play. :)

It is F2P, there are people playing, not alot on east coast pm timeslot but usually around 150-200 per realm. If you check it out and like it hit me up and i can throw you a few gold to make the lower lvls not quite as painfull.

Me & Kvasir stopped a while back at lvl 36, since 90% of the people who said they'd play pretty much quit before they even started. It was pretty disappointing to go through that too since those of us who did make it to 20+ had a blast in pvp while it lasted.
If people had stuck together we would've conquered every pvp zone on the way to 50, no doubt about it. We spent more time waiting on people to start than playing the actual game so I'm not too eager to go through that again.
I'm in the EST myself so if there'd be 5+ players from the US interested in making a pvp group together, I might give it another shot.

ok, so I just stumbled on this thread...I'm an old daoc vet (50 troll shaman cave/men spec...don't hate...cave FTW!) I'm already downloading this to roll up a toon. is there a p99 guild you guys started or anything? honestly just being able to play classic daoc is enough to get me logged on rather consistently. just want to figure out how I can connect with any p99ers playing it?
btw, I'd be willing to roll up a kobold...shadowblade or sham.

So I spoke to my friend Kvasir, and we were talking about making a new pvp group for Albion, aimed specifically at the first pvp zone (lvls 20-35). But before we start we need to see who else might be interested in this venture.
Basically we would hold crew xp groups on a daily basis, as well as pvp together whenever the opportunity presents itself. This will be caster focused pvp group, so we'll most likely be making Theurgists with different specs to compliment each others spells.
Make a post in this thread if you are interested in being a part of this thing, and what times you are able to play. Kvasir and myself will try answer any of your questions and plan on XPin together right off the bat.

I'm in the EST, and Kvasir is on Estonian time (6-7 hrs ahead), but his work schedule allows him to play on US time. It's classic themed DAOC with SI classes, as well as other modifications. You can find all the detail on this on the first page of this thread. The servers been up roughly 8 years now, it has a stable population, no buffbots allowed.

The other 2 times we tried this kinda thing with p99 players before, we basically lvl'd ahead and waited for people to catch up, and that didn't work out very well. This time we plan on starting all together, from lvl 1 on up so no one will be left behind.

No, we haven't started yet, we're still gathering players for the crew so when we do start we'll all be on the same page. You can download the client for free off the official site, Uthgard's site has all the instructions: http://uthgard.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=53&Itemid=69&lang=en
As for server info and technical stuff, check out the first page of this thread.
Update: We now have 4 players committed to the crew. We'll all be starting from scratch from lvl 1 together, so don't worry about having any existing chars.
Once we have a full group (8 players committed to this thing), we will meet somewhere regularly outside the game as well (IRC and/or Teamspeak) to discuss what classes we want to play, when we plan to have groups, trade intel, etc. Heck, maybe we'll even make our own "P99" guild eventually if all things go as they should.
I will post the names of the players as well as the classes here once we start our crew meetings.
NOTE: Some of our current crew members already have high-lvl chars in Albion (L47 Sorceror myself), however, everyone who's joining this new crew in-the-making will be starting off from lvl 1 on up so nobody will be left behind or be put in a situation where they have to solo just to play with us. Even if a member falls behind, said member will always be welcome in the group regardless of level unless we're in a level-restricted zone.
Loyalty works both ways in this thing, if you're loyal to the crew, the crew will be loyal to you.

I played on the game's release back at the end of 2001 as well, they def improved the interface and graphics big time. I wish SOE would've done the same for EQ, but that'll never happen. If you'd like to get more familiar with the realm we'll be playing in [Albion], feel free to make a char and mess around with it.
As for some classes being disabled and the server being buggy, you gotta remember that its a CLASSIC server, like Project 1999 is CLASSIC EQ. If disabled classes and a few bugs here and there is your definition of broken, then every active MMORPG that exists is broken, cause they all get patched.
My suggestion is, try the game with our group before passing judgement, you got nothing to lose.
We'll most likely meet on IRC [Windows IRC Client: www.mirc.com] (IRC Server: irc.eqemulator.net, chan: #uthgard), to meet outside the game before we start so we can plan our playtimes and what kinda group we'll be making, who will be playing what etc.
If you need help or have more questions, feel free to ask.

Well they did do a few UI updates throughout the first few expansions and upgraded graphics with luclin.. but it sucked pretty hard IMO lol
Yeah I noticed classes/races were restricted, but thats obviously going to happen with a classic server. As far as bugs, I don't know which ones exist since I haven't started playing yet. Certainly not broken from what I can tell
When are we going to meet on IRC?
Btw, if my bro wants to play, do I need to apply for an IP exemption? I just read no buff bots, but didn't see anything about applications for multiple log-ins

1) Basically most of the SI classes are enabled, but all the original classes are 100% in and working as they should. In fact the only SI class disabled is the Necromancer in Albion, which isn't that big a deal tbh. Bonedancer in Midgard is implemented for the most part, except for the pet spec. Other than that everythings working like it should. Obviously there aren't going to be any Catacombs classes enabled on a classic server.
2) We will probably start our IRC meetings tonight around 8pm EST. Though I'll be in the channel earlier.
3) You are correct, there is a no boxing rule just like on P99, you will need to get an excemption. I forgot what steps need to be taken for it but I'm sure we'll solve that issue soon.

My favorite classes though were never completed: Bonedancer and Spiritmaster. I'm a sucker for pet classes and unfortunately pets were messed up/incomplete. Bonedancers were missing entirely and Spiritmaster pets were not finished.
I did have a problem with a lot of people not speaking english there. It's hard to play with others when everyone's speaking a different language.

It's funny you mention those issues, because I remember those times also. However, these days just about all of the classes are fully implemented (the only exception being the Necromancer), the SM pets all work like they should, the BDs are limited to the one pet but it still doesn't stop good players from pvpin as that class - all the non-pet spells work.
The current "P99 Group" is active in Albion, it just started about a week ago, focused on being a Caster Group. There's about 6 playing, though most of the group is still levels 14-15.

If I ever decide to install DAOC and play there again, I have a lower level sorcerer in Albion. He's able to charm things that weren't charmable on live, or at least used to be able to. They may have changed/fixed it.

We actually have a need for a primary sorc in our group, since we don't really have one. The most active players in the group are the 2 Theurgists, a Cleric, and a Minstrel; so we have heals, speed, some cc, and plenty of dps - but we do need a dedicated sorc for the primary CC role not just little things like mana regen and charm.
CC in DAOC plays a big role in how things play out on the battlefield, the Theurgs get AOE Root and a short-duration AE Mez, but its no replacement for a well-played Sorceror. A Wizard or two would be nice also, but that's not as important.

My biggest problem with the game was how prominent CC was in PvP. There were entire battles that came down to which CCer clicked their button first. Regardless, that game had the best PvP of any MMORPG. It's the game I left EQ for (well, Luclin helped push me away too). Relic raids, Darkness Falls fights, just going out capturing or defending forts, it was awesome.

Our group actually plays more during US EST prime time than Euro prime time, and there's plenty of pvp going on. The server got alot better in that regard, way more US players spread out through all 3 realms. So if you want to give it a shot, it's not too late to join up with our crew - we're creeping up on level 20, at level 25 we start PvP.
