forgot which thread had the tangent about HK/Chinese action movies

tonight's flick in the series titled "shit you should fucking watch" is

City on Fire (1987 film)

is a 1987 Hong Kong action film[1] directed by Ringo Lam. It stars Chow Yun-fat, Danny Lee, and Sun Yueh. Following A Better Tomorrow (1986), City on Fire helped establish Chow's popularity as an action star in Asia and to a lesser degree North America.

I can't remember anything about that one, but I have it rated as 6/10 (same for A Better Tomorrow). The Lunatics (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090940/) from 1986 was more interesting for me.

My biggest Hong Kong recommendation is Comrades: Almost a Love Story

Looks cool

I am not going to be posting much until the 30-40,000 guest bots bogging the forum down get dealt with, no rush tho, I understand mods are volunteers with lives

But I had wanted to mention for a couple days now that I just saw this announcement on FB, and was fairly disappointed

I still have yet to play Elden Ring but I really enjoyed hearing about this char and especially how incredibly OP she is, being that she has never lost until you face her. My cousin is pretty good at video games and he gave up on beating her because he didn’t want to have to re-roll or use a cheesy strat to win. Which to me speaks a lot about how strong of a boss she is

And the idea of Sydney with her huge rocking tits trying to play the most powerful entity in the game, combat wise, is silly. There is NO WAY she will be able to do convincing combat or sword choreography. I was never impressed with Scarlet Johannesburg’s portrayal of black widow either

They need to get an actress on par with those girls from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon that can actually do convincing fight choreography

>Comrades: Almost a Love Story
Country boy Xiaojun (Leon Lai) moves to Hong Kong, hoping to get rich so that he can send for his hometown sweetheart and marry her. But Xiaojun barely scrapes by in the baffling metropolis, and is lonely until he meets city-slicker Qiao (Maggie Cheung). While she schools him in urban living, the mismatched pair become best friends and eventually have a romantic tryst. Both decide it's wise to forget their passionate night and remain friends, but they still secretly yearn for one another.
idk if my soul can handle a HK Romance right now but it looks good

>Elden Ring
>They need to get an actress on par with those girls from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon that can actually do convincing fight choreography

yeah Ive given up on new movies until i can do the casting choices myself with AI, like un-fucking ironically.

like here's a teaser for a Blade Runner adaptation a dude is making, we're getting there.

Last night I watched the Departed (again) I really like that movie.

But per some of our earlier convos and hong kong.. did you know it's a re-make of a (legendary at its time) hong kong movie Infernal Affairs?

I personally prefer the departed over infernal affairs, I think culturally its more relevant to me, and it's also an extremely polished movie. Like, I reckon that Infernal Affairs had to "invent" this story.

But the departed got to take all that work and "perfect" it.. which IMO they did. But.. both are excellent, and I recommend both bigly.

I think the funniest thing is how Matt Daymon and Leo goes through a particularly "Chinese" style education system... that doesn't look anything like ours, but looks very much like their culture lol.

No way our police officers are that disciplined during training. No way. No shot.

Departed was great. (Edit: spoilers ahead, sorry this is your warning) Even though he’s a narcissistic manipulative douchebag, I actually liked when Matt Damon’s char turned on Jack’s char

The last thing he said as he gunned him down was “RAT PRICK!” And it’s true. He’s just following the code. Jack’s char was technically a snitch, even if he was a mafia boss, snitches get stitches

^
Oh the only thing that was a logic gap for me was Leo’s char was set up to be too intelligent to stupidly leave out the envelope labeled “citizens” from its original spot on Matt’s char’s desk. This tipped off Matt Damon’s char that Leo’s char had seen it, which prompted Matt to go delete Leo from the database

The obvious smart play was leave the envelop exactly where it was, play dumb and finish dealings with Matt, then bust him

Incredibly stupid high school level planning to move that envelope

Yeah Departed's characters were just perfection. So deep. So awesome. Both of the characters are similar in IA but.. I think they were perfected in the departed.

I do have to call out the scene, where Matt Daymon says the name of the movie like almost directly looking into the camera... that should have been cut.

"What's his name... *turns to camera* tHe DepArTed!?"

Mark Wahlberg's character is one of my favorite characters ever written, and I have never heard of any other character like him in anything else.

I actually thought the War of the Worlds version with Tom Cruise was very well done up to a certain point. The tripods were pretty frightening, I love that bass boat horn noise they made, ominous. And that scene where they are driving away with the tripod basically exploding the entire city behind them and the bridge is flipping over was extremely well shot. Best city destruction snapshot I could recall seeing up to that point in almost any movie

(Spoilers or whatevs)

It’s unfortunate that the entire movie tanks as soon as we get that protracted basement huddle with Tim Robbin’s character. Man that got boring and weird. And the rest of the movie continues to go downhill to a logically ridiculous idea that some species so much more advanced than us wouldn’t have anticipated the concept of germs

I love the tom cruise one! I wish it had 1 more 15 minuet scene in it to make it a tiny bit longer, and it would be one of my favorite movies. My only complaint with it is the 3rd act happens a little too fast.

Id have liked after the ferry scene, for them to have grouped up with that woman and her kids for like 15 mins, then they die or something and the movie caries on.

The basement scene was a down point in that movie for sure.

The movie did dread so damn well, which is such a rare quality. The buildup is fantastic, helped by scenes where the bodies are going down the river and the train is going by completely on fire. Then of course the mob scene realistic and terrifying

And then the ferry scene it’s like you have this built up feeling of dread and it’s presented as so hopeless. I was just thinking ok man, you’ve done all that you could, but you are completely fucked. Keep trying by all means, I still would to the very end. But you’re so fucked

The last time I remember such a good feeling of dread was the American version of grudge where that white woman is running from the house demons. Holy cow that was such delicious dread

I can't find the TV thread but this is a little bit of a crossover.

Just finished these 2 starter episodes last night, really enjoyed it! It feels like the show creator really likes Alien movies.

I watched a youtube Alien timeline video and the TL;DR is that this show takes place in 2102 - and Prometheus and covenant took place between 2080 and 2095 - and the origional aliens movie took place in 2120.

So it's right inbetween the two timelines, and fits in really well. Good job show creator Noah Hawley! I guess he made the Fargo TV show, which is pretty good. And also Legion which was pretty good.

Our life is not a movie or maybe (https://lite.cnn.com/2025/09/19/asia/one-piece-flag-indonesia-nepal-protesters-intl-hnk-dst)

Real and digital worlds merge

Characters and symbols from popular culture are often adopted by protesters to convey a shared cause or value system.

Pepe the Frog, the right-wing online meme, was adopted by pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong in 2019, while a three-fingered salute from the Hunger Games movie series is used by young pro-democracy protesters in Thailand and opponents of the 2021 military coup in Myanmar as a symbol of resistance.

The One Piece Jolly Roger Flag is a useful symbol because it can be easily adapted from protest to protest and infused with new meanings more specific to the time and place, said Natalie Pang, professor in the department of communications and new media at the National University of Singapore.

In Nepal, protesters displayed slogans such as “Gen Z won’t be silent,” “Your luxury our misery!” and “Nepo Babies” alongside the flag in reference to anger over politicians’ children displaying their lavish lifestyles on social media.

“As a visual symbol, it is gaining a lot of traction because it is in a way, quite effective for people to rally around it to say, ‘I stand for these symbols, these values as well,’” Pang said.

“It is not just rallying people around the values, but also potentially mobilizing them to join in those protests.”

Through social media, there is a blending of the real world and the digital world, she added.

“We are seeing a kind of remixing, a kind of diffusing of both political cultures of expression together with popular culture of consumption.”

yeah I like how it combines the like, old alien movies vibes with the new Prometheus alien vibes.

Alien Earth is pretty good.

I'll have to take a look at this, really needing some good sci-fi after binging The Foundation left me so thoroughly disappointed.

can only rewatch The Expanse so many times...

Yeah, it's been a real dry 4 or 5 years for sci-fi fans IMO.

Foundation was a welcome addition but it really is dumb now like I couldn't care less about it.

This pysicic homless kid being the bad guy bullshit is the dumbest crap ever.

USed to be that netflix would release some kind of corney sci fi movie or series every week I miss those days.

the whole show, minus the Cleon stuff which was actually good, turned basically into Star Wars.. I've not read the books in decades but I'm pretty sure it didn't have Jedi, a Deathstar, space battles with small fighters, yada yada.

Daybreakers is the best allegory for postmodern American civilization.

Ru into the 31 atlas buzz?

Looking for something to watch while you play everquest?

This is a great 90s made for TV movie about a... mysterious.. astroid heading towards earth, from the point of view of the nightly news.

I just watched The Long Walk.

It was so weird. It had no plot.

It's such a missed opportunity.

The world is devoid of creativity.

It had no women in it so its 10/10 from me though.

Movies are so bad right now, I bet someone will make one where 1 actor spends 1.5 hrs slowly dying stuck in his space ship like this and it will still cost 400 million to make and they will market it like it's a blockbuster.

Would have been a cool death scene in an old movie though.

Who out there that would like that actress would want to go see a friggen movie about a woman boxer and who would want to go see a movie about a woman boxer isn't already mad as hell at that main actresss.

This casting almost feels like a spring time for hitler (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1K4yDUWdIw) conspiracy, only this time it's working.

i saw her in madame web and realized she's not very good ather job

which is cool because that godawful movie was crammed with nepo babies

i enjoy ruby rose getting mad about it, though. not that she's a good actor, either.

She was great in that show whats it called um idk oh yea white lotus.

But she has been in movie after movie of "i couldn't give a shit about that movie" movie, since.

My biggest sad is that the It Follows style horror movie never stuck around.

I liked that girl in it. Maika Monroe. She had a real cool way about her.

I do feel hella bad for sidny sweeny though, she just exists, doing an actors job, and everyone is pissed at her lol

Last time i was at the theater I thought cool it will give me an update on the current state of the collapse of western civilization.

If people are quiet, then things are getting better, if they talk and use their phone in the movie society is collapsing.

Well the TL: DR is society is collapsing.

Me in almost empty IMAX laser theater for F1 Brad Pit movie.

In comes two Russian / eastern euro dudes. Sit right next to me (premo seats, assigned, but theater is basically empty cmon man).

Both of them get out these extending arm things that attach / base sits in the cup holder, and mount their phones in front of their faces.

I shit you not they talked and were on their phones for the first 45 minutes straight.

I had enough. I leaned over, turned my head, stared directly at them until I got their attention and just sternly said "guys are you fucking kidding me right now?"

They both got up and moved.

Fucking new age dipshits. Get off my lawn.
