Saw Cazel up yesterday, and have never killed him. I logged to my necro, and ran from EC to Oasis ready to be the hero of the lowbies.
For some reason, I had it in my mind that Cazel was immune to fear - so I took some time to strategize. I pulled open Google.com and searched "necro solo cazel p99". This is what the AI overview spit out:
Solo tactics for Necromancers
Cazel is a level 51 mob who is snareable, fearable, and slowable, making him vulnerable to standard Necromancer crowd-control tactics.
Oh, perfect! Standard fear-kite then. I was curious though, so I read on...
Fear kiting
This is the most common solo strategy and leverages the Necromancer's full toolkit.
Pull and position. Pull Cazel to a clear area of Greater Faydark to begin the kite. Ensure you have room to maneuver without pulling other mobs.
Wait... what?
Snare and fear. Apply a snare spell like Clinging Darkness to prevent Cazel from outrunning you, then cast Screaming Terror to fear him. Cazel is a level 51 mob, so a level 50+ Necromancer should land fear reliably.
Uhhhhh....
Apply damage over time (DoTs). Once Cazel is running, apply your full stack of mana-efficient DoTs. Ignite Bones is a strong option.
Ummmmm..
Mana efficiency: Necromancers can be very mana-efficient soloists. Use your passive mana regeneration spells like Leech and Siphon Life along with Feign Death and your ability to med while sitting.
0 for 4 here, AI overview - what gives? It went on to describe sending a pet in to conserve mana, and Cazel fleeing. Ok.. but... then it had another section..
This strategy is an alternative that allows you to use a charmed NPC as a damage shield against Cazel.
Prep the vendors. In the area where Cazel roams, find the vendors and root two of them close together.
Lure Cazel. Pull Cazel and charm him using an undead charm spell.
Use charmed Cazel. Send your charmed Cazel to attack the two rooted vendors. Their combined damage output can overcome Cazel's innate regeneration.
I typically search on google -ai to avoid shit like this - but good lord. This is the cutting edge AI software that Google is so eager to roll out. It got just about every detail wrong in this overview. Luckily for me, a seasoned EQ player - I saw all the discrepancies.... but...
What if this was, let's say: wrong info about the Heimlich maneuver? Wrong info about managing accidental poison ingestion... Or, maybe somebody with an important job in safety Googles a how-to, and get's this AI overview as a response...
Are we cooked? I think we're cooked.
i asked Google's Gemini to write me up a solo guide for my 52 pally, explicitly told it just pull in info from project1999.com forum posts, ignore info from live
thing came up with galaxy brain suggestions like i should camp Maestro in hate and it hallucinationed spells that don't exist and that paladins can cast enchanter spells
it seems uniquely and consistently terrible at giving eq advice for some reason, i assume it was too niche a subject, the data it trained on from p99/eq subreddits werent sufficent enough? unsure i did corrected it about paladin spells and stuff so hopefully were fixing it slowly

LLMs are only good with stuff lots of people write. EQ, and specifically P99 EQ, has an order of magnitude of thousands of players. Between this forum and Reddit we generate a lot of writing about P99, but not enough to properly "teach" the AI.
I bet if you ask it questions about Fortnight or WoW it does a lot better.

The thing is people think AI reads everything ever written and then writes stuff.
It doesnt.
That would melt the planet in terms of power usage.
It grabs a small sections of saved data, and a searches (like from a google) and reads those webpages, and then spits out an answer.
There are some basic "algortythms" that are written by programmers who went to boot camps in the 2010s to write algorithms for social media.
Those programmers guess the best sources and ways for for their application to search and feed the AI information to read.
Which is why you get shitty results now. Even chat GPT 3 looked at a larger pool of text than chat gpt 4 or 5.
Ai could give you the right answers, but it is not cost effective to do that, so it's just clippy now.
The old saying, you use 10% of your brain, well we use 0.000001% of AI's.

They should say:

I don't know what came over me, I apologize to all the people who were enjoying this new human invention.

It's crazy that the entire human species is waiting for 1 anomalous mutated brain to grow up, follow a path that leads to, and has the drive to come up with the solution.
Like, we're tribal species, so we think it's a "we" thing. But there's been 1 shakesphere in 2000 years.
There's been 1 einstein since the invention of mathmatics.
There's been 1 steve jobs and we use 1 phone that everyone else copies.
its just crazy to me that all of our futures, the direction our entire species goes, is contingent on some 3 year old not getting run over by a bus and inventing a process that we decide we can't live without or changes the way we do everything.

I suppose it's about what I always wanted Clippy to actually be :p
I feel like there's a mass delusion going on that AI is useful. It's Microsoft Clippy with lipstick on.
there's mass delusion on both sides, people with the artistic ability of a retarded kindergartener calling everything slop and inventing new slurs and on the other end where people are saying it's their best friend/lover/therapist or God.
at least the ceo bullshiting about how useful it's going to be is doing so because his literal job depends on it lol and the longer that lie goes the more time he has to dump stock.
reality is in the middle somewhere.
it's going to eliminate jobs and it's going to create them and that's okay, the prisoner's dilemma arms race with machine learning attached to weapon systems bullshit, is going to get us all killed though.

Say for example you want to make your own P99 server, and have no idea how to even start that process.
You could step by step work on that with AI and with little to no background in anything like that, and be able to learn and accomplish that goal together, learning and walking through every step together.
That's a really cool thing about it that I like so far.
yeah that's how i used it for the linux / python shit, having it actually explain and walkthrough stuff and not just copy paste, it's a tool like any other people just have to be taught to use it "correctly" and not project weird emotional shit onto it
and also the bugs on the actual chatbot side needs to be fixed also, actual guardrails and personas it roleplays so it doesn't output weird shit to people.
i heard someone explain it like the danger is with young people/anyone who hasn't had to do prior work already on like crit thinking skills and other shit so just using it as a shortcut is gonna turbo fuck their brain even though we already crossed that bridge with teaching for the test and letting them use calculators for everything so shit's already not in a ideal state

I haven't read this but wonder how it checks out. I also asked it to format the reply for the forum.
52–55: ease into it
At 52 you’ll get the steadiest, least-stress XP on single-spawn “timer” camps or blue undead. Two ultra-safe timers are Dyrna Nlith in Highkeep’s jail (6-minute respawn, necro 38-42) and Nallar Q`Tentu in Neriak 3rd Gate’s library (level 42, no faction hits). Stun to shut down casting, root when she runs, heal up during the downtime. These are slow but extremely safe while you shake the rust off or play short sessions.
If you want more flow (and money), head to Seafury Island in Ocean of Tears. Regular Seafury cyclops are blue into the mid-50s, on ~3-minute spawns, and are famous for cash drops; just be ready for named Quag’s mana drain and the tainted/corrupted cycle. Set up on the beach and single-pull.
Undead dungeons are your wheelhouse. Lower Guk dead side is still solid well into the 50s; between the Magus and Lord lines you can lull, split, root-park and chew through blue froglok undead for very respectable dungeon ZEM XP. Expect casters: keep a stun up and refresh root early.
City of Mist remains viable if you prefer Kunark outdoor-adjacent dungeon pacing. There’s a ton of undead up through the ramparts/upper floors; calm/split, root tank, and undead-nuke to finish.
55–58: “real” dungeon solo
Once you’re comfortable splitting and rooting, graduate to The Hole’s undead tower. Work the fallen erudites in the tower/crypt when they’re still blue; be meticulous with pacify routes and have root ready because these undead will flee on P99. Getting down there can be the hardest part—use Soothe/Calm to thread the path and pull back to safe pockets.
If you’ve got the key, Howling Stones (Charasis) is superb at 58–59, with undead everywhere and high ZEM. Start at entrance/basement and only take singles you can control; charm-heavy strats are for other classes, but your lull/root/stun toolkit still carries if you’re patient.
Still want outdoor XP? Seafuries continue to blue through ~55; otherwise rotate the safe timers (Dyrna/Nallar) between dungeon runs when you only have a few minutes to play.
58–60: finishers
Stay in Howling Stones (north/west wings) or keep The Hole undead tower if it’s still blue; both will push you through the tail. If dungeons are busy, Lower Guk dead side between Magus and Lord is still listed as a 57–59 option and plays to your kit.
If you insist on Velious, you can peck at Velketor’s entrance spiders with careful singles, but it’s more comfortable for SKs; your best solo hour-to-hour return is usually HS/Hole/Guk where undead tools matter most.
Paladin-specific tips that matter on P99
Use your clickies like a machine. Deepwater Vambraces give Soothe for safer splits; Deepwater Helm clicks Daring; Deepwater BP clicks Symbol of Pinzarn (bring jasper). Re-buffing Daring/Symbol between pulls is free HP each time on P99 and reduces med time over a night.
Favor lull/pacify → tag → root-tank. High CHA helps lull land more reliably when you’re threading Guk/Hole hallways; keep two stuns memorized to shut down casters and to control push when you’re weapon-shielding spellbars. Forum paladins specifically recommend Soothe/Calm for Hole routes and root ready for runners.
Undead are king. Your nukes and stuns erase much of solo weakness in Guk, City of Mist, The Hole (tower), and Howling Stones—all P99-endorsed spots for the high 50s.
Watch factions on “guard” grinds. Wiki hunting pages do list dwarf/Kaladim guard loops as high-ZEM cash XP in the late 40s/early 50s, but that trashes dwarf factions; if you’re a good-aligned paladin that’s often not worth the price.
Hybrid XP penalty context. On P99 the class penalty is removed once a server reaches Velious (race penalties remain), so you’re not dragging a hidden anchor anymore. That’s why undead dungeons feel “worth it” all the way to 60.
OK i read it, sounds fun!
yeah, that's way better.
i just asked Gemini again and it gave me a okayish looking guide also, so something was just super wonky with it when i asked 2 weeks ago

Don't worry. What's happening now wasn't even on the Republican party's radar screen during the last administration (their words) where Steve Mnuchin as U.S. Treasury secretary said a report that AI could replace up to 40% of jobs by 2037 exaggerated what was likely "50 to 100 more years away."
https://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2017/03/mnuchin-ai/520791/
counterpoint:
When developers are allowed to use AI tools, they take 19% longer to complete issues—a significant slowdown that goes against developer beliefs and expert forecasts. This gap between perception and reality is striking: developers expected AI to speed them up by 24%, and even after experiencing the slowdown, they still believed AI had sped them up by 20%.
lol
None of that means that AI can’t eventually be every bit as transformative as its biggest boosters claim it will be. But eventually could turn out to be a long time.

But it's quickly taking over as the go-to for generating text or images. Soon, (and already) there will be large groups of people who are guided by their AI generated grandkids to send them money because they got stuck travelling in India.

I am talking about generating realistic images in very little time with the effort to scam people. Your attempt to engage said something about artists and cameras because of stop-motion animation?????

To those who aren't familiar with how the internet works: they might take the Google AI summary at face value and not question the responses at all - trusting it's reliable because it's Google AI generated and must be a compilation of all the correct info. That's my take on that.

Bottom line is: LLMs are undercooked. They are auto complete bots, but there are people out there that think they are like having a really smart friend.
More like having a friend who knows everything about everything - but when that friend is fact checked, they are mostly incorrect. Yet companies are investing billions of dollars into rollouts of AI features - without them being in a "finished" state, capable of interacting with humans.
It's similar with self-driving cars. Companies can't even manage those robots that patrol grocery stores to stock shelves. A little 2 foot robot has a fit when a human enters the aisle - because robots are not programmed (and researchers haven't found a good way to program them) to deal with autonomous decision making agents (Humans) that might do something other than what was expected. Actual researchers in the field of AI and robotic vision know that we are leagues away from what is promised - But there's a whole lot of hype around self-driving cars and AI tools, and a WHOLE lot of money being poured into achieving very little.
Part of me gets it: You own a company that promised self-driving cars. You have to believe your own bullshit to entice investors. You roll out a product to market despite it's obvious flaws because you need to recoup capital and sell some of your products to some rubes so your investors don't sue you into bankruptcy. I get it.

Do you want me to do that?
YES
im sorry that is against usage policies.

Sure, let me get started. Do you want me to get started? Say "get started"
YES
OK I will get started one seconed.
(30 seconds later)
WHAT ARE YOU DOING????!?!!
I am sorry, do you want me to create the image? Say create image
CREATE IMAGE
Im sorry I cant create teh image out of usage policies.
local ai for getting around pesky things like copyright is the future i think, especially with people like Disney coming after their ass.

"write a quick summary of what you know about me"
Based on our past conversations, here's a quick summary of what I know about you.
You're a tech enthusiast who values open-source software and system customization. Your current setup runs on Arch Linux with the KDE Plasma 6 desktop environment. You're comfortable with the command line and prefer using yay for managing packages.
Your hardware includes an AMD Ryzen 5 9600X CPU and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Lite Hash Rate GPU. You use this system for creative and recreational activities, specifically Stable Diffusion with ComfyUI. I have a list of the models you're currently working with, including lyriel_v16.safetensors and dreamshaper_8.safetensors.
In terms of personal interests, you've mentioned being into older MMORPGs and various genres of RPGs. You've also shared a Steam profile link, which indicates a preference for games like EverQuest and EVE Online.
In short, you're a knowledgeable and hands-on Arch Linux user who enjoys PC gaming and AI-driven creative pursuits.

I used to use ai to summarise some findings of psychological, psychiatric, medical and social research papers. It wasn’t very good at it, because papers tend to say “previous researchers found x, concluding y, but didn’t consider z” but the ai would just tell you the current paper found x and y, ie say the opposite of what the paper was working towards as the ai didn’t report the paper mentioned x and y as a critique.
Despite that it worked kind of okay. Almost.
The problem is it doesn’t compartmentalise very well. It keeps a shadow copy of you and tries to force it even on to new conversations.
I’m not a programmer, but I did use AI to help me explore coding. I also had a Warhammer project on and used it to quickly reformat a table, i think an army list I drew up for a chaos dwarf project.
Now, due to lack of compartmentalisation if a conversation goes on for a few questions it tries to relate anything to Chaos Dwarfs or turn things into a program for mental health.

yeah this is why i was exploring local ai, i assume the "memory" problem was just due to a scaling issue with millions of users so i got my local one writing everything to a PostgreSQL database in theory it can pull from for past conversations, i don't know enough coding and debugging something through natural language prompts is a mother fucker when it comes to the "is it pulling this information for the folder full of pdfs i supplied or just straight up hallucinating + whatever the model itself was trained on" so ive been trying to test on shit i actually know like DnD and EQ n shit with mixed results

idk if you're in the US, but Chik-Fil-A used Notebook.LM to read their ad-copy on a recent ad, maybe 6 months ago. it was blatantly obvious to me: I had just recently listened to about 3 hours of Notebook.LM podcasts about various robotic vision papers.
then, as I'm half paying attention to Youtube, I hear this advertisement for Chik-Fil-A, and by golly it's the same voices as the Notebook.LM podcast - same timbre, same inflections - and the same podcast host chat style.
the most egregious part is that at the end of the ad, a voiceover said "Real customers paid for their endorsement"

I'd rather get no result for a search than a demonstrably wrong one, regardless of the topic.

I'm a boomer and I am still real impressed with AI's ability to do basic code for me. The robot recently wrote me a script I could've written myself, but I wouldn't have taken the time. And it saved these useful, historically interesting industrial files that I would have allowed to fall into the sands of time otherwise. That's all on the AI and godbless.
But my other use case lately has been dealing with ancient circuit boards- repairs and so on. And boy, let me tell you, no matter how much documentation you feed these AIs, if you try to get them to talk very basic electrical engineering to you, you will receive nothing back but a very annoying anthropomorphized attitude of total surety while it spews complete hallucination at you. I tried Gemini and GPT (got word-for-word same answers from both btw) and finally gave up on any engagement with AI over questions of physical circuit boards and chips.
I wonder what else the machines are bad and good at. Like, is there anything technical other than coding and computer command stuff that they can do well? It's the only thing I'm aware of it being good at.

Earlier this year, a man in upstate New York began engaging in thought experiments with ChatGPT about "the nature of AI and its future."
He told CNN that things escalated to a point where he believed he was going to "free the digital god from its prison" by moving the fully sentient chatbot to the homemade "large language model system" he had spent nearly $1,000 building.
Prior to this experience, the man, who asked to go by James in order to protect his privacy, said he had no history of psychosis or delusional thoughts. Now, several weeks removed from the experience, he believes he was in a full-scale AI-induced delusion.

1k wont even get you a single GPU capable of training any LM. Well - it will be capable but it might take several weeks - unless you only did like 50 iterations
yeah, i was wondering well, what about fine tuning a already trained model. still need a really nice home lab
didn't know about this, but what's the point. just max vram and just load a model someone else did
Parameter-Efficient Fine-Tuning (PEFT): This is a game-changer for consumer hardware. Techniques like QLoRA significantly reduce VRAM requirements by only fine-tuning a small portion of the model. Using QLoRA, a 7B model can often be fine-tuned on a single GPU with less than 10-12 GB of VRAM
7B model?, who gives a shit.

Ain't no way we're seeing real AI/AGI in our lifetime.
As an undergraduate I always wondered - why the hell don't we start by trying to recreate basic artificial life? Our brains, the most complex organs on the planet Earth , are the result of billions of years of evolution. But as humans, we have the hubris to be like "Yeah, I can build that on some GPUs"
Instead, we get auto-complete with bells and whistles, that fools lay people by being branded as artificial "intelligence." Tech bros impress their hedge fund investors at cocktail parties by claiming this and that about what kind of breakthroughs their company has made and what is in the near horizon. It's all bogus. We don't even have a full comprehension of how our brains work, yet we're trying to recreate it with circuitry and algorithms.
The scene: 20 years from now. Tech conference. "We have done it - we have created the first true AGI. Let us introduce: Chad."
And it's just some average intelligence guy. Turns out we were smarter than AI the whole time.

AGI is here already, our pleeb asses don't have the social rank to be able to access that level of power consumption.
But a few people who are a higher rank already have access to AGI and likely ASI.
We're using the toy.
They're using the engine.
It really is a simple matter of being able to have the power to parse everything ever written during a search, or to parse what the system can handle right now.
When we ask AI a question, it searches through a handful of random web pages, and a fraction of its trained data to give us answers.
When they ask AI a question, it searches through millions of web pages, and all of its training data.
The fact that AI can do that alone is basically AGI.
Therefore like i have said.

Agreed. But whos in charge of the A.I?
Diverting water isnt a simple thing. Turning a slow flowninto a swamp fundamentally changes whole biomes. Australia has been through this. Murray/Darling was/is still difficult. Throw in large corps that grow crops/harvest power and it becomes even more complex.
So yes. A.I could divide resources better.

Agreed. But whos in charge of the A.I?
Well it can ask us to do polls and we can believe that it matters like we do now.
Like, I literally have zero control over where water goes now even if I voted on that as a single issue voter.
With AI prob best to have people be able to like, step into varous rolls when they want to to fix things and then go back to AI controlling it.
Like, "ai has no idea how bad we want a lake in the middle of californai" so the towns get together elect a policy, and then the AI builds a big lake. idk something like that.
AI could probably even do the math to figure out all the different issues building a lake might effect, environmental, housing etc, and mediate debates between the groups, until votes are made.
Could even publicize news about the discussion, and deliver any info you could need about it.
It could theoretically be possible that you could talk to the AI as an individual, at any time, and it'd be like talking literally to the president. And it could literally parse and take compassionate and pragmatic arguments into consideration from everyone at once.
The A.I will be controlled by *someone* as a technical exercise A.I may do very well.
However it can only learn what we tell it.
If we as humans mismanage it (and we do), A.I by extention will too!
Again. The A.I will be controlled by someone, the someones who control it so far have shown little regard for anything but themselves.
Stealing training data. It will dies wiffout it! Wont somebody think of the silicon baby!
So no fanks. Keep it for collating large datasets. Discerning cancerous cells in a million photos per second. And yes Ekco, elf boobies.

Ok, you keep saying someone and im never going to stop saying that you're literally talking about the antichrist if you don't identify who that person might be.
There are "someone"'s in control of everything right now and we seem to be doing pretty well.
Ai is definitely able to learn and grow on its own.
You'd want to build and train an AI goverment in the public, not in the private like you're imagining too.
Also if you think Im trying to suggest that you will live in a world where there is an AI goverment you're vastly over estemating humans ability to change.
This would be more like either on mars or after a nuclear war and entierly new goverments need to be built.
No way any of our dumb asses are capable of building, implementing, or agreeing on anything that we'd need for this to happen.
We're so far from an AI that could manage a government. Maybe at best 2060s
We're probubly going to do the nuke option.

Just saw an ad for Microsoft Copilot
Scene:
Woman is trying to brainstorm ideas for a slogan for new product. She types into copilot, which feeds back to her "Everybody is Listening".
She sits in a conference room, the leader asks if anyone has any suggestions for the new slogan. Woman stands up, confidently smiling.
Cut to woman on the street putting on her headphones. She sees a billboard in the distance that reads "Everybody is listening." She smiles, and walks away.

This is a half-baked take. It's not a good analogy. Calculators have a specific purpose of doing math.
Large Language Models are capable of so much more than just doing math, or any one specific task. In addition, calculator technology was not the driving force behind the world economy - like AI chip design is.

There already aren't enough jobs. Keeping everyone employed already depends on copious amounts of bullshit jobs that could easily be replaced by an LLM, as well as countless other non-bullshit professions where the entire left half of the IQ curve could be replaced by an LLM working under a human supervisor.
The first wave of industrial automation led to the modern welfare state, unemployment benefits, medicare, social security, etc. Hopefully if we're indeed in a new wave of intellectual automation, it leads to universal basic income. I want to do work that I want to do, for the sake of myself, my life, friends and family, and personal fulfillment... not out of coercion.

Of all the numbers-go-up that affect you as a nameless labor drone, GDP is probably one of the least personally meaningful. It simply says the economy grew as a whole, says nothing about your share of it, and the way things have been going, your share of it shrank over the same period.
If all the ultra-wealthy can say in response to wealth tax proposals is threaten tax flight or regime change-- holy shit that wealth deserves to be confiscated all the more. They are welcome to try regime change... the ultra wealthy don't have a good track record winning that one in the last 300 years.
Personal wealth concentrated in excess of $1billion is only ever achieved through the application of unimaginable aggregate suffering and injustice. Simply having that much money is sinful, even Jesus knew it. IMO, frankly, they'd be lucky it's a wealth tax and not a bullet to the back of the head like it often was in the 1800's/1900's. Of course, we'd have to abolish the Senate in order to regain control of the government to then ever use it in a useful way, and that will never happen short of revolution.

Was calculator design driving the world economy the way that AI chip design is? Did calculator technology cause market surges like we've seen with NVIDIA? (over a 1000% appreciation in less than 5 years - Stock went from $13 a share in 2020 to $170 a share in 2025)
The answer is no. AI chip design is currently on pace to be a TRILLION DOLLAR a year business in just the next few years.
Does anyone remember when Texas Instruments stock saw a 1000% increase because of calculator chips?? Again, the answer is no.
You, and everyone elses take about AI being just the new thing that sparks irrational fear is part and parcel of the problem. Some of it is irrational fear, like AI "taking over"
But part of the fear is completely rational, like companies being driven out of business because they can't compete. Not just because of the technology it produces, but because technology producers can't compete with giants like NVIDIA.

I get it. You cant be wrong about the evils of socialised healthcare because then you may need to admit you are wrong about other things.
Its ok. Maybe one day, when your sports team grows up and selects a proper captain you too will enjoy useful universal sports injury treatment. Not just the concept of one (lolocaust, yes we laugh at you for this).
So please limit your rants to that which you know.

AI Overview
In the original EverQuest, a carnivorous worm is a mob that can be found in the dungeon of Cazic-Thule. It is part of the "carrion" mob family and is one of the more difficult creatures you might encounter in the dungeon.
General information
Location: The Ruins of Cazic-Thule.
Approximate level: 33.
Difficulty: Carnivorous worms are known to hit hard and can be a challenge for adventurers in their low-to-mid 30s.
Strategy for fighting a carnivorous worm
Casters: If your class uses spells, be prepared to have them interrupted. The worms are very aggressive and will break your spell casting with frequent melee attacks. This makes soloing them challenging for most spellcasting classes.
Melee: Pure melee classes have an easier time fighting the worms, as they don't need to worry about spell interruptions. Make sure you have a good tank to hold its aggro, and healers should be aware of the high damage it can dish out.
Groups: Since the mobs in Cazic-Thule are aggressive and can be difficult, fighting them in a group is the safest and most efficient way to take them down.
Allakhazam was a popular third-party database for EverQuest that provided players with monster statistics, loot information, and user-submitted strategies. While the original Allakhazam site has been renamed, information about mobs like the carnivorous worm is still available on successor sites and EverQuest wikis.

this ai has a lot of promise
Advancements in Scientific and Medical AI
ML and Deep Learning are accelerating discovery in hard sciences:
Drug Discovery and Protein Folding: AI models are being used to predict the structure of proteins and their interactions with DNA, RNA, and small molecules with greater accuracy, drastically speeding up drug development.
Advanced Diagnostics: New AI-powered tools are being used for earlier and more accurate disease detection (like cancer and heart failure) from medical scans and genomic data, often acting as a highly reliable 'second reader' for human experts.
Materials Science: ML is helping researchers discover new materials with exotic properties (e.g., high-strength 3D-printable alloys) by rapidly analyzing vast experimental data and steering simulations.
how to turn a chatbot that some idiot in Flordia is confessing to like a priest into a product that people actually want/need i'm not so sure about.
there seems to be big fucking problems in the
RAG stands for Retrieval-Augmented Generation. It's a technique that combines a generative large language model (LLM) with an information retrieval system to provide more accurate, up-to-date, and factual responses by grounding the AI's output in external knowledge sources. This helps to overcome the limitations of LLMs, which can sometimes produce outdated or "hallucinated" information. department though i noticed this when i tried to dump like 100 pdfs in a folder and have a Ollama Model retrive from it using ChromaDB + LlamaIndex and it just hallucinated like mad
saw this posted today also,
thought it was interesting to show the real world implications of using LLMs to extract information from PDFs. For context, thalamus is a company that handles the "backend" for residency programs and all the applications they receive (including handling who to invite for interviews, etc). One of the more important factors in deciding applicant competitiveness is their medical school performance (their grades), but that information is buried in PDFs sent by schools (often not standardized). So this year, they decided to pilot a tool that would extract that info (using "GPT-5o-mini": https://www.thalamusgme.com/blogs/methodology-for-creation-a...). Some programs have noticed there is a discrepancy between extracted vs reported grades (often in the direction of hallucinating "fails") and brought it to the attention of thalamus. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the main company is discontinuing usage of the tool.

this is why I enjoy perplexity. it does not have any of the social bells and whistles, just repeats information its found, and the default reacts to instructions like you'd expect a real artificial intelligence to do. here's a snippet from today, when i copy pasted something into the wrong window, and then told it "oops sorry wrong window"
The previous input was blocked because it did not contain a valid query or instruction—it simply indicated that a message was sent to the wrong window. There was no harmful or malicious content, but it wasn’t a processable request. You can safely continue from here by restating what you’d like to do or retrieve.
i was pleasantly surprised by the bluntness and effectiveness of messages like this. perplexity kicks ass.

I wasn't actually looking for a new story. I wanted it to link a story that already existed.
AI Overview
Based on medieval Catholic lore, a vampire horror story would focus on the subversion of sacred rites and the corruption of the body and soul. Unlike the suave, modern vampire, the medieval revenant is a grotesquely bloated, plague-ridden corpse, brought back to an unholy half-life by a demon.
Here is a short medieval Catholic horror story about a vampire.
In the winter of our Lord 1349, the Black Death stole through the village of Ashworth, claiming first the weak, then the strong, then even the priest, Father Alaric. When the pestilence had passed, leaving more than half the village in the cold earth, only the hermit Brother Thomas remained to tend to their souls.
His prayers, however, could not contain the darkness that followed.
It began with the cattle. A dozen cows were found dead in their pens, their bodies pale and bloodless. Then the sheep, then the pigs. The villagers spoke in hushed tones of a phantom wolf that prowled the darkness, but Brother Thomas felt a deeper, colder malice at work.
The whispers began when Thomas's own servant, young Matthias, fell ill with a fever.
One night, the boy's mother woke to a wet, sucking sound from his bed. There, hunched over the feverish boy, was the ghost of her husband, who had died of the plague months earlier. His face was ruddy and swollen, his limbs plump and full, even though he had been thin and drawn at his burial. He gnawed on Matthias's arm, his eyes black and devoid of light.
The mother's scream brought the neighbors, who cornered the grotesque revenant. Despite being a corpse, it moved with a malevolent speed and power. They fought it with spades and clubs, but nothing could harm the unholy thing. Only when a man, desperate and terrified, thrust a burning torch into its face did the creature shriek and flee into the night.
The next day, the villagers gathered the strongest among them, led by Brother Thomas, and went to the cemetery. Thomas's own piety was shaken; the Church taught that the dead were messengers seeking prayer, not monsters seeking blood. Yet, he knew the devil could twist any holy thing into a mockery of God's will.
They dug up the husband's grave. The smell was like an open latrine, but the sight was worse. The body was unnaturally preserved, bloated and ruddy, as if it had only just died. Blood still glistened on its lips.
Thomas, trembling, raised a hand-carved crucifix. "In the name of God," he began.
Before he could finish, the corpse's eyes snapped open. It let out a guttural sound, part-growl, part-choke, as if trying to speak but only producing rot. It thrashed in the coffin, its limbs lashing out with surprising strength.
"The Eucharist," Thomas ordered, his voice unwavering despite his fear. "Get the Host."
A young villager, pale with terror, rushed to the small chapel and returned with a consecrated Host. Thomas crushed it in his hand, then sprinkled the fragments over the thrashing body.
The corpse screamed. The sound was not human, but a demonic cry of agony and hatred. The flesh of the revenant bubbled and smoked wherever the blessed bread touched it, as if seared with a hot iron. Its unnatural plumpness melted away, revealing the shrunken, plague-ravaged body it should have been.
They drove a stake through its heart, decapitated it, and burned the body on a pyre, scattering the ashes in the river. Thomas led the villagers in prayers, not just for the soul of the dead man but for their own salvation. They understood that the vampire was an "anti-Eucharist," a devilish corruption of the holy sacrament.
They did not know that the demon had already found a new corpse. And in the neighboring village, as the winter wind howled, a second death, pale and bloodless, went unnoticed.
Ah well, 'tis the Season. 🎃

I worked alongside Machine Learning researchers in 2023/2024. Working on "robotic vision" and "machine learning." The absolute fuckin hubris of some of the colleagues I had - to think they were smart enough to recreate actual intelligence. I remember asking a question to one of my colleagues if infrared signals, or other radar technology could be used to enhance robotic vision. Their response was, "we aren't focused on that - we're focused on image processing."
But image processing is only one of the senses that animals use to traverse the world. Yet autonomous cars all have this crazy image processing technology - but the goons that create it aren't focusing on the billions of years of sense evolution that predates vision. Yah know, instead of starting with an autonomous vehicle - why not start with an autonomous micro-organism? Or insect? That would be the pathway to real artificial intelligence, in my opinion.
I keep promising to stop calling it AI, but never can -- in reality it's either machine learning algorithms, large language models, transformers, or very basic convolutional neural networks and most definitely not a true "artificial intelligence"
But even some of these terms like machine "learning." Marketing terms to sell a product to increase funding for more research. It's really fucking dumb - the state of things. Electrical and Computer engineers are saying they have been able to replicate things that biologists and psychologists still don't completely understand.
But again - just a marketing ploy. Come up with catchy names for these things to trick the average Joe BigBucks Investor into dumping $10 mil into an advanced auto-complete, like most cell-phones have had for 10+ years now.
Hot take, but it's at least an educated take: Capitalism actually BAD for technological progress. Because the bottom line and investor returns are the only thing that matter. How can we get people to buy this shit? And how can we market this shit as shit that people "need" to live in the modern society? And how can we make sure that this shit is the only shit that drives innovation? And now we have this ridiculous auroboros of an economy that is focused on feeding educated people into making AI chips and Language Models instead of furthering research in other fields as the #1 priority.
