inconsistent 'send heading' skill

I have noticed that the 'sense heading' ability consistently fails the first time it is used, even if you are at level 200. Is this really the desired behavior?

can always do the drop a weapon trick; they always point north

Never had an issue with 200 sense heading, if it does occasionally fail just press it again lol
