I've been waiting for another progression server from Sony for so long I just finally gave up. I was cleaning my computer today and ran into my old EQ folder. I logged into EQEmu and saw this server. Intrigued, I made the changes listed on the forms, logged in, and created my half elf bard.
My first view was of the old East Freeport. And I nearly cried. I was standing next to a FP guard. Thinking back to my key arrangement for EQ, I hit "A" to turn left. Suddenly, my screen freezes and once I discovered what I had just done, I laughed so hard I cried.
Note to self: The default keybind for the "A" key is not "Turn left." It is, in fact, "Auto Attack." Change this and the other directional keybinds before to attempting a "left turn" while standing next to an East Freeport Guard.

P.S. I love the server, great job!

Welcome Lidara! Nostalgia reigns here on P99 (and the healthy or not-so-healthy dose of drama too.)

Welcome! I can completely understand what you felt. It's pretty darn great :)

Indeed.
No game to date has done for me what EQ can, and thankfully now still does.

When I started again, I loaded up in Neriak, I had to just sit back and absorb it all in. The second I logged on I got that feeling I can't put my finger on it, but no other server has been able to capture it.

My most memorable EQ moment was in the Neriak Necromancers guild on my first character which was a DE Necro. I remember hearing the different music and the style differences. It was the first time I had really been drawn into a game and it made the hair on my neck stand up.
I had more experiences like that, later on. My first run through Kithicor.... at night. The first time I went on a dragon raid(Vox, she killed us so many times I swear she dinged). Finishing my Cleric's epic, finishing my Bard's epic, and the first time I swarm kited on my Bard.
For the record, I remember when banded armor was twinking gear, you didn't get a backpack as a newbie, you had to actually LEVEL your sense heading, and the phrase "Griffon to Tunnel" was cause for concern.
Now... get off my lawn!!

I used to track for Griphons in the commons everytime my ranger went through it. even at lvl 60 I did it every time to get back at it for all the newbie deaths it caused me.
My newb dr00d definetly needs backpacks aswell. Screw twinking just let me get my hands on a backpack please!

That's part of the nostalgia though too. It wouldn't be classic EQ with out uber guilds competing, flamewars, and idiots being blacklisted?

Yes... you are correct... as much as I don't care for it, it's definitely part of it! Hah!

It's been tough. Tougher than I remember. I didn't level a melee character(my bard) until after luclin so it's possible I missed out on some ugly stuff. I made a necro this morning just to break up the grind and summarily made it 3 levels past my bard in about half the time it took me to get my bard to level 5. Leveling a bard through the classic content is something of a new experience for me and adds to the overall appeal of the server.
Not that I enjoy seeing "Lidara tries to hit a shadow wolf but misses" four times before I see "Lidara slashes a shadow wolf for 3 points of damage." Inevitably, this leads me to "Lidara has been slain by a shadow wolf" and the ever popular "Loading... please wait.." But this has been part of the EQ experience for some time and it does eventually get better.
Having said all that, I would like to see some option for the Luclin character models. Yes, I know it's been discussed a lot on the forums. Yes, I really did read the forums threads about it, thats why I'm being opinionated here and not creating a thread elsewhere. Yes, I still plan to keep playing on the server. I wouldn't be much of a fan if I quit because my half elf bard is more of a block than a half elf.
No, I don't care if you think I'm gay because I like most of the Luclin models better, excluding the Troll and Ogre models. It's already disturbing enough watching an ogre scratch his ass every 30 seconds with the classic models. If there is one picture we do not need a better resolution of, that would be it...

You thought "A" was turn left? I always think "A" is auto-attack.
Conclusion? You're not a true eq player.

I'm glad to see you back. The more the merrier. It's a wonderful life. Nonetheless, I'm not a nice guy. I should probably be wearing something evil looking. I am going to reply without any reservations.
My take on the luclin models is that, if you have the luclin model turned on for your current character, then others will see the luclin model. Conversely, if you do not have the luclin model turned on for your current character's race, then others will see the classic model. Anything else and I would vote for only classic models.
A poll was held a while ago and the majority of people voted to keep using classic models. I was surprised that so many felt this way. I of course voted against using luclin models, but I made a post detailing the idea of only showing the luclin model if the player being viewed has the luclin model turned on for that race. So it would be on a per player basis (not universal), but also require additional coding (this is not just client-side).
Why do I feel this way? Because the luclin models change the character of your race. Ogre's go from being callous, stupid and vagrant, to being ruthless and imposing warriors. Humans go from being reasonably generic, everything from a fighter to a caster, to being steroid meat heads. Essentially, most of the luclin male models were pumped full of testosterone by the looks of it. Or they're made to look younger, more impressive and heroic, with varying amounts of success. I mean, just look at the human females. Breasts do not make the woman! There's positively zero argument that there's no difference between the classic models and the luclin models. The difference is obvious for all to see. All that aside, when a player picks a race, they often pick it based on how it looks. How you look to other players matters, whether it's the race you chose, your appearance, your name, or your gear. This how other players should see you. I'd agree with a universal luclin on/off IF, and only IF, there was a lower poly version of the luclin models that would be used if it was off.
Did I say that the classic models seem to be more generic (melee <-> caster)? Also, if you examine the facial textures for the classic models you will note vastly more differences between them than you will in the luclin models. For example, the position of the eyes/nose/mouth/ears? is a constant in the luclin models because of the 3d engine limits. In the classic models, it's a facial texture more than it's a facial model - more flexibility.
If only the developers had stayed truer to the character of the original models, none of this would be a concern. This is their fault, not ours. They, unfortunately, ignored the impact your appearance has on your gameplay. How can they not know? Players pick armour and weapons often based on how they look. They choose a name and/or title that fits them. They change their appearance (their hair, face, maybe add a beard). They dye their armour different colors. How can ANYONE not see how this is a significant part of gameplay????? This is not a slap in the face. It's just an example of a crowd of people who do not understand the term RPG. This is the example they're giving us. They're telling us they don't understand and seem incapable of learning.
If I was a big company and changed things on a whim and then turned around and blamed the players when they complained, who's the bully??? SOE is ultimately going to lose customers over things like this. While SOE has full ownership of eq and can do what it wants, we as customers can choose not to play. The newbie islands ("tutorials") they make to consolidate players, the NGE debacle, the Vanguard mess, the tendency they have to use the same concepts and developers on multiple projects, makes them look very mediocre and opportunistic. Just think for half a second, if a tutorial was so important, it would have been put in during beta not several years later. The "tutorials" they make are made to put a shrinking population into one zone. They don't think ahead very well, and overuse what they trust. And on impulse will abandon their so called "convictions".
People spend $$$ (real money, lots of it) in Second Life on clothes. Virtual clothes. Case Closed.
