View Full Version : Monk Gearing Help

Hey all -
I've been playing a Monk primarily the last few days, and have a question about gearing at the early to mid-levels.
Currently I'm stacking items that have HP on them, and maybe a stat or two that comes along with it. Is the right path to go for a monk at level 8 and up? Or should I be focusing on STA/STR/DEX? I've been forgoing most of these stats in favor of HP (which I find is helpful).
For example, I have two of these rings on currently:
Obsidian Ring
AC: 3
DEX: +3
HP: +10
But I've been looking at getting the Clawed Knuckle Ring instead which has these stats:
Clawed Knuckle-Ring
HP: +20
Should I forgo the AC & DEX for the additional +20 HP (considering two rings)?
-----------
And another question -- I can't seem to find a good Robe/Chest piece to wear for my monk. Nothing seems to look good. Currently i'm wearing Mesh for my chestpiece, but would like to find something with stats on it (HP!) -- and that is cheap -- say 50pp-ish.
And I can't find any bracers to wear that would have some stats either. Currently I don't have any bracers at all. Again would be nice to find some bracers that are around 25-50pp, and have some stats.
Any suggestions?
Thanks all!

Thanks to both! The list is very helpful and gives me some direction, as well as a tip on those JC +5AC +55 rings (albeit expensive rings for my current state).

Oh and back to my original question, is it better to forgo the AC and DEX in favor of HP? Should I grab those 2x Clawed Knuckle rings over using 2x Obsidian Rings?
Ferok

Cloak of Shadows is such a no brainer.
Obsidian rings are much better than clawed-knuckle rings. The ac will help more than the extra 10 hp. Save for Jagged Bands once you have other slots with hp.
I played a monk for years, so i'm going to toss out some loose recommendations based on my knowledge of the current market and game availability for low to mid levels.
Ears: ?? 2ac ears or 2 str ears at first, Others seem to be expensive. Forgive my lack of knowledge here
Neck: Collar of undead protection 10pp or less.
Head: Fine silk turban drops off of lvl 24 SG in SRO. Best monk head for a long time, otherwise do quests for headbands.
Face: Split Paw Hide is wicked cheap on vendors if you can't find better, otherwise dented mask
Arms: Azure arms sell for around 50pp. You won't find better until kunark or beyond imo.
Gloves: Wu's Fighting gloves. Makes your bare handed attacks magical! (Magic Kung Fu! Wooo-taaa! :D) Split paw gloves are heavier, but work as magical gloves as well. (And is vendor buyable for less than 5pp)
Rings: Keep the obsidian for now, upgrade to jagged bands / hp rings later
Chest: Lockjaw Vest (lvl 25 named gator in oasis), Your mesh conundrum can be solved by checking vendors in the commons / fp area, but that is a temporary fix in the long run.
Waist: Monk Sash. Do the quests. You'll love it. It's a way of life.
Weapons: Glowing wooden crook is 50-100pp? If you can afford the weight it is nice. Drops off of Lockjaw as well. Save for enameled black maces and use fists otherwise.
Range: Kerran toy quest when you can, otherwise just load up some shurikens for ninja time! Split paw eye is weightless and a light source as well.
IMHO Wu's armor to fill in slots. It isn't expensive in the grand scheme of things, vendor dive at tailors or find some one to make them for you for mats.
Remember, you have a weight soft cap. I can't remember if it is 14 or 16 in classic.
Happy Wushu-ing.

Huh -
Your post is INFINITELY helpful. Thank you very much. I will hop on my toon shortly and repost what I already have. Some of the stuff you mentioned I ended up getting already (just by figuring were good items).
The biggest and BEST investment I've made was to get dual-Enameled Black Maces. Given I spent pretty much all my cash on them, which is why I'm now "budget" buying.
That tip about the Wu's gloves making your fist attacks magical! I didn't know that! How cool.
I already picked up the Purity Belt for my waist, so I'll try to work on the Monk Sashes in the meantime. I have the White Sash, but I don't think I can kill the mobs required for the yellow belt yet.
Thanks again Huh!

I forget, but if I recall correctly you also need magical boots for certain monk attacks.

I believe you are correct for attacks like Flying Kick.
As a side note, fists become magical weapons at lvl 30, according to this link.
http://forums.monkly-business.net/index.php?pageid=abilities
You can just use dragon punch or tiger claw on magic immune mobs if you don't have magic booties by that level.
Also, I forgot.
Do the gem inlaid gauntlet quest when you're in the mood. Easy as pie with a bit of running, decent gloves til kunark.

imo as a monk you namely want AGI+HP/Sta/Str.. Dex is namely for procs, and secondly hit lands. Being a monk, youll be a puller in many situations so the Agility and Stamina/Hp will assist in that. The STR will boost your atk, enabling you to land higher hits, but landing hits also ties into Dex, so id say str/dex are a secondary objective since your primary objective is pulling..
This is coming from an 85 monk on live :P War was my other box, as was shm, so shoot me pm's if youve questions on these classes.
Edit: Agility also Ties into AC, but not so much here since ac is slightly borked. The more ac you have, the more damage mitigation you have. Take this advice as is, build your character to your own goals. If you want to DPS to the max, Stack STR/DEX, but expect to take hits often due to the sheer amount of dps youll put out :P

Atvaata,
Thanks for the tip! I'm fairly new to the monk, so any advice is helpful. Yah I've been focusing on AC + HP currently. I picked up the Fine Silk Turban last night, which is a good AC headpiece for a monk. I should list my current gear here and see what you guys think... i'll do that tonite.

AC and HP is definitely king for monks, especially if you're a puller.

Do you even know what the fuck a monk is? Judging by this post, no. This is emu; formulas are way different here than on live (currently.) So really your input is little-to-no use to this person. No Offense.
AC > HP > STR(dps)/STA(hp) is how it should be, but once again formulas here are gay and terrible, so it is instead:
HP > AC > STR(dps)/STA(hp).
One might also consider resists above all when factoring in pulling/high-end encounters.
AC is two things: Mitigation and Avoidance, packed into one stat. AC applies to every hit, as opposed to one +50 hp item is a fourth of a round from one high lvl mob so really what do you think is better? I say AC. Still, even here, but idiot monks here think I'm wrong (emil, dianamel, aka my guildies i h8 them)
but whatever.

Yah... i'll be focusing on HP + AC for sure. Seems to be most effective so far (even at low levels).

This thread makes it appear as though maxing a monk is easy. A few items are listed, and ac/hp (no brainer). EQ in 1999 seemed a lot harder to understand. You know, that was part of its appeal. I recall not knowing whether ac or str/agi/dex or hp or resist was better. I just went with it and learned along the way because back then we just didn't have the answers. In fact, any piece of armor with something on it felt satisfactory. When you limit your selection to just ac/hp, you cut out a lot of the diversity and quantity in the world.
Consider. If you have all the answers in front of you, then it's just a matter of going from 1 to 50 and getting the platinum you need. I don't know about other people here, but for me the excitement comes from discovering the details and methods on my way to nirvana. If everything is in front of me, it's just a grind and no fun to be found. I understand helping out new players, but a complete walkthrough, or anyting of that nature, is like taking all the wind out of an airship and expecting it to fly.
I wish allah had never been created. In fact, I wish there were no EQ information websites. I've used them just as much as any of you, honest. I've got 100's of allah links for eq items. I printed out epic walkthroughs. I'm guilty as charged. But on deeper inspection, once all of the unknown is removed, all that's left is a grind from 1 to 50. An instruction manual. A to B to C. Fun, no. That's the biggest thing about classic eq that cannot be brought back. We cannot be noobs again. The wonder of the world back then, back before I ever used allah or eq websites (i didn't use walkthroughs back then, and i've never used map printouts excepting the eq manual).
The awe is something that died 10 years ago. And now we've all been reduced to grinders and chatters.
If all of the answers we've acquired over the years could be replaced by new unknowns, none of this would be a problem. The problem is that eq is finite, and once you got all hte answers, there're no more unknowns remaining and the unknown cannot serve a purposeful role. There's no more genuine exploration. I know many muds (multi-user dungeons, text-based) that prohibit players from giving out quest information to other players (especially new players). The community(s) themselves police helper websites as well to make sure not too much information is available. Some of you may think this is an extreme measure, but some people take this issue seriously. There's a reason that walkthroughs don't come with the game manual - you're meant to play it and explore and find hte answers because that's part of what makes it fun (and rewarding). If you remove that aspect of the game, you automatically make it more unappealing and grindy to a great number of people. Just think, if you removed the unknowns and joys in life, all that's left is 9 to 5 work and old age and death. Life would be no fun without the mystery and atmosphere that's conducive to culture and enjoyment. Maybe this is not a good example, perhaps it's misleading to some. But that's how I feel about it, at this point.
Not to potty on the fun. I hope I don't come off as too cynical. I've helped new players before by giving them probably too much information (hey i thought i was being helpful). I just have come to despise allah over this past year due to circumstances both on the live servers and here at project1999. I cannot change my thinking about this. I guess what I could do is tell you I'm sorry and wish you a good time on the server. I'll say a prayer for you. Even I can hold out hope. This server is doing great, and people who who fondly remember 1999 now have a home. They don't have to use allah or eq websites. It's a joy for many. I acknowledge that.

OH and to Stormlord. Don't be a party-pooper man. So far from what I've seen you have alot of great people that wanna bring back a game that meant something more than your average Press A to attack B to dodge game.
Let people have their fun, no one wants to read how you think it's "over" and blah blah.
Let us level, have fun, and SOCIALIZE on a game we all enjoy
Thanks !!!
