Been wanting to come back to Everquest, but my best memories of the game are from beta/plain and early Kunark. A friend of mine told me about Project1999 and I was wondering if its worth coming back to, if there are enough people playing on the server still to get groups and such.

I tried coming back to the regular Everquest servers and its a nightmare to level if your not a class that can solo well because there are no groups for leveling anymore.

I see orc groups happenin all the time while I'm sitting in EC. AFAIK there are groups all over the place, and people are leveling alts a lot. We're hitting about 800 peak and we have a steady 400 around all times

Had a couple character names, Xarn was one, Motten was my 1st, Xorez was another.
Played mostly Prexus early on.

Gotcha, knew a paladin by the name of Xarn back in the day. Thought you might have been him. At any rate, Pro 99 is a lot of fun, and I reccomend you try it out.

Definitely jump in & try out the GFay/CB area - you'll have a great time!

Also, stay off the forums. They're totally unrepresentative of the actual in-game population.

Plenty of groups at lower levels in all the usual places (Crushbone, EC, Unrest, Guk), even Befallen. Using the LFG tag (which ofc we didn't have back in the day!) is very helpful and people are pretty good about traveling if it will get them into a decent group. I strongly recommend that you give it a shot :)

What classes are in demand right now? For low lvl and even up at high lvl for grouping/raiding? I've played most/all of them up to at least 60 and enjoy most of them.

All level ranges - good tanks

High levels - good tanks, sometimes DPS, sometimes heals

Cleric - always a good chioce

Bard - great if you can handle the carpel tunnel

Wiz - meh until raiding, then....good luck unless you get in a raiding guild

Enchnater - great until high levels, there are more top level enchanters than any other class.

Every class is in-demand if you can play it well!

Fortunately Wizards are always in high demand considering they're sort of unpopular.

That's actually a good point. Wiz's definitely have their benefits but are shunned by a lot of the server.

You will certainly want to try the server. It's very much like the old days. I suggest playing a class you liked on live or one that you always wanted to play.. heck, do both. :-)

I would advise against a melee as a first char. Without some plat for decent gear its a hard road. Play a necro druid mage or shaman. Classes that can level quickly and by the time you hit 30 or so you can solo some decent loot camps to get some money to twink your melee a little and make the early levels a lot less painful.

Just as an FYI, the "Red99" server, will be a PVP-based server. If you are looking for the main-stream original EQ PVP experience, just start now. You won't want to wait for Red99.

Don't wait! This is great. Like coming home.

Ahhh! Xarn. Lovable pally in Afterlife. What a standup guy he was. Totally fit the bill of a paladin.

Try it out! From 1- 30 so far I have yet to have a problem finding groups during prime time. Gfay -> EC -> CB -> NRO -> Oasis -> SK -> Mistmoore.

Come enjoy it!! :)

I love p99, been around for a few months now and it's endless fun. If I read the forums first before trying it... I'd have probably never played. Listen to Dr, the forums are evil :)

It's definitely no problem to start out here and begin grouping as early as level 4-5.

Gfay is your best get for consistent grouping. I've taken several characters through crushbone recently, probably easiest place to find a group in the game.

Oasis is probably second easiest, which is fortunate since when you've outleveled crushbone you're ready to go there. If you play through both of those zones you'll make a lot of friends. I still have people on my friend list that I talk to regularly (who are raiding now) that were noobs with me on my first char when we went through crushbone.

You'll be surprised how many of these low level people you group with are new players too, it isn't all twinked alts.
