http://bodyodd.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/09/02/7562355-pot-smokers-skinnier-than-non-tokers-study-says

We're all familiar with the stereotype of the typical pot smoker -- a lumpy, lazy couch potato with one hand wrapped around the remote and the other elbow-deep in a bag of nacho cheese Doritos.

But new research out of France gives a different spin to the stereotypical stoner.

"Cannabis is supposed to increase appetite," says Dr. Yann Le Strat, a psychiatrist at Louis-Mourier Hospital in Colombes, France and co-author of a new study in the American Journal of Epidemiology. "So we hypothesized that cannabis users would be more likely to have higher weight than non-users and be more likely to be obese."

Instead, Le Strat and his colleagues found just the opposite.

"We found that cannabis users are less likely to be obese than non-users," he says. "We were so surprised, we thought we had [made] a mistake. Or that our results were due to the sample we studied. So we turned to another completely independent sample and found exactly the same association."

Le Strat and his colleagues ended up using data from two epidemiologic studies of U.S. adults -- the 2001-2002 National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions and the 2001-2003 National Comorbidity Survey-Replication -- to tally the weight differences between pot smokers and non-pot smokers.

Obesity rates among participants in the two surveys who reported no use of cannabis were 22 percent and 25.3 percent, respectively. Those who fessed up to smoking pot at least three days a week, however, had obesity rates of 14.3 percent and 17.2 percent, respectively.

La Strat says there could be "confounding factors" which would explain the results -- such as the level of physical activity of the pot smokers, or the fact that they might also use tobacco -- but they tried to rule out such factors.

"We did our best to take them into account and still showed the association," he says. "Our findings are too preliminary to answer [what accounts for the disparity]. But there are a lot of different substances in cannabis. The observed association may be due to the effects of one of them."

An adjunct scientist at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto, Le Strat was also quick to point out that his study might send the wrong message.

"The take-home message is certainly not 'smoke cannabis, it will help you lose weight,'" he says. "The possibility that cannabis is associated with a lower risk of obesity remains an interesting hypothesis, but certainly does not counterbalance its negative effects on health and mental health."

Andrea Giancoli, a Los Angeles-based registered dietitian and spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association, agrees that the study seems very preliminary.

"There could be many other reasons why pot smokers have less obesity," she says. "Maybe they're inclined to exercise more, be outdoors more, eat more fruits and vegetables. There could be all kinds of confounding factors that could make the results null and void. We can't look at this study and take it as a license to go out and smoke pot because we think it's going to help us lose weight. We need more information."

Giancoli does acknowledge one thing, though.

"I know when we think about smoking pot, one of the jokes is that it gives you the munchies and dry mouth so you drink a bunch of water and eat a bunch of Cheetos," she says. "Maybe we need to adjust the stereotype."

I think the reason we see so many gangly potheads is because their food budgets suffer.

Nonsense, a suffering food budget tends to include more processed/fast foods since they're cheaper but way worse for your health and waistline.

Marijuana has been linked to all kinds of crazy things such as reduction of cancer. Studies have shown time and time again that marijuana users are less likely to develop cancer than non-smokers; especially those who avoid the harm of smoking itself by vaporizing or ingesting marijuana.

We haven't quite mastered chemistry enough to know what exactly is going on with everything we put into our bodies. Sometimes all we have is observation.

Makes sense to me. If you are anxious and bored, you might reach for a beer, which is added calories. Or snack on comfort food. Weed has no calories.

It's the chemicals in Cigs that give you lung cancer. Weed is all natural. And as stated THC pills and edibles are different options if you dont want to smoke. I love popping 2 pills when i wake up in the morning and being baked for next 4 hours.

It's not hard to go online and find all the positive medical benefits of weed from actual doctors. The only thing weed and cigs have in common is that you can smoke both. The comparisions stop there.

i believe this, frankly when i used to smoke daily a few years back, (i don't at all anymore) i would actually have to eat before hand or usually not at all.
complete loss of appetite, dunno why, but instead smoked 4x as many cigs.
same deal with any hard drug, its so hard to force anything down.
your mind is elsewhere, ex- most stoners are usually one track minded.
i find it hard to believe they can think about more then one thing at any given time.
you're playing a game? sure you're playing a game.
you're driving? sure you're driving.
you're getting liquored? yes.. you're getting liquored up.
the desire to eat may be there, but do you believe any real smoker to actually stop what they're doing and go grab a burger? helll no.
theres a 45 minute craving period before somebody actually says
"fuck it, im going to mcdonalds.. it is pretty far.. maybe i'll just order in?"
how long before this dipshit makes the call?,
maybe i am rambling but somebody has to get my point.

on the other hand i've known a select few who were the opposite,
can't eat in the mornings until they've had a smoke.
no appetite. however i' would just chalk that up to addiction.

comment? flames? wheres my love ;p
hhahaha...

here is where u are wrong.... the chemical used in synthetic pot was developed to test the adverse effects of THC on the c1 and b1 receptors in the body... its been tested on animals for years and their has been no adverse reactions or effects on any of them. May be before you go assuming stuff u might want to do a little research on the subject.

the chemicals used in synthetic pot are fairly diverse, being released in a staggered fashion to keep the industry ahead of each chemical's eventual prohibition. Most synthetics don't contain a list of active ingredients, and instead say "not for human consumption". You don't know enough o-chem to know which chemical biproducts are in the spray they drop on those oregano leaves along with the potentially toxic jwh-xxx some sellout cooked up in the university lab. genius burger

Grats on cutting and pasting from wiki... Nice to see u can search the interwebs.... I for one do not go out and buy that Gas station crap they call Herbal incense I make my own so yes I do know what chemicals are going into my blend... and I don't use oregano as you eat that shit not smoke it. i use a mixture of Mullein leaf, Marsh mellow leaf, and Damiana leaf. The RC i use comes from a very reputable business guarantees product to be 99.9% pure and anyone with a basic college chemistry class under their belt can make the stuff.

again stop assuming and RnF is -----> go troll their

5"11 140 lbs 25 Yrs. I would say its true.

Also, Eating kills your high (least for me). So I tend to eat a big breakfast, toke up and eat smaller meals through out the day so I don't get too burnt out. But I also don't eat fast food, pizza, Chinese food or anything that typical fat Americans eat 2-3 times a day without hesitation.

That being said, If you were overweight and started smoking pot you aren't gonna lose weight. More likely will become lazy, sit on the couch and eat more processed foods. I would say though if you were always in decent shape, that smoking pot isn't gonna turn you into a fat slob because all you do is have "the munchies".
