I played EQ Classic in as a Rogue, on Innoruuk. I loved the game, but ended up quitting right before Kunark was released...due to the sheer ignorance of the dev team when it came to fixing Rogues.
I wanted to come check this P99 server out, cause I miss the old days. My question is this, is the exp rate totally the same as the old days, are Rogues currently unable to find any decent weapons (like the old days) and how is a Rogue supposed to level up on this server without any friends to play with?
Which leads me into my next question, anyone wanna roll a Dwarf sometime soon, and play with a Rogue? =)

There are decent weapons available w/o breaking the bank. Jade Prods and Slime Coated Harpoons.
On average you will see 300-650 players concurrent on the server. That means most "hot spots" will have 15-30 people in the zone. With a rogue's ability to find a group you should be ok. That or you can make a caster like a Necro/Mage and farm up some twink cash.
It takes brass balls to start a rogue with a rusty dagger. We all did it once though! :)
Edit: Oh and welcome aboard!

Same, still painfully slow. But hey, atleast you're not a hybrid with the exp penalty!

if you wander around looking pathetic in east commons for a while you'll eventually get handed some nice twink gear.

After my first day, I stopped playing the Dwarf Rogue...unbareable leveling speed...no one around Kalimdor really...went to Iksar Monk, just as bad unbareable leveling speed...but atleast not totally useless solo. I've been turning in bone chips and repeating the curscale armor quests, but after 7 hours of playtime I still am just about to ding Level 5. Am I doing it wrong, or am I just so spoiled from playing other MMOs since EQ that I can't take the slow pace?

This. I was trying to buy a ghoulbane with my measly 800 plat from Leoric's little giveaway and someone gave me 2.2k plat, ghoulbane, and a shit ton of other items

Iksar have a racial exp penalty (20%, I think?)
The first 10-12 levels seem brutal with just about every class. This is EQ though, it's a group game. If you don't want to group you're going to limit yourself on what you can play.

Just a heads up, if you plan on playing a hybrid, the first 9 levels are like hell on earth, as soon as you hit 9, bam it's a whole 'nother beast.

For the iksar race penalty and being nearly 5 starting 100% fresh it's too bad maybe a lil behind. (like lvl 6 would be tops if you were on your A game imo)
If you know how to read maps i would get to EC and you might get lucky with a freebie or some hand-me down's a good chunk of the server is fairly friendly and like to help out lowbies and new guys. Then you can grab some buffs and head back you can stay in cab/kurns area till your teens if you'd like OR plan your own exp route Norrath is huge and its so sandbox you can pick and choose where to exp, you can always catch a bind somewhere and start from there (within reason if your iksar)

THis is classic EQ where leveling is a bitch, CRs can drive you mad and not getting a rez +45 will set you back hours. Welcome back =)

I'd say your spoiled like the rest of us from other MMO's. The difference here is, I have a level 10 druid. I've been playing for about a week. In this week's time I could have had a 50 Jedi Knight in SWTOR Beta, a 50+ toon in WoW.. But I would not have the same satisfaction that I am receiving from this character. I have put time into him and watched him and molded him to where he is now.
I remember playing live and there was a reason I spent years playing that game. I had a sense of pride about my character, and yes it was a grind, but that is part of the experience that makes this game what it is.
It's not going to get handed to you in 2 weeks unless your grinding your mind away for countless hours. It is going to take time. My general rule was 1 level a day average.. until you get up in the 30's you might get good groups and get more, but id average it out. You want a level 60 toon within 2 months time or so. And that might be a serious understatement on time.
Just my thoughts.

Yes XP is really bad in Kalimdor. You should have taken griffon ride to Loch Modan instead ;)

LOL, good eye there...I can't believe Kalimdor and Kaladim are so similiar in structure! My apologies! :p

Being a classic server there are xp penalties in play. An Iksar Monk actually something like a 44% xp penalty because class and race penalties are multiplicative. Field of Bone bonus and quest is probably making up for that atm.
If you continued to play the rogue I would just say make your way over towards crushbone and get a bind at orc lift. I'm sure you will find no shortage of players there.

Thanks for all the advice guys, I started the Iksar Monk to get some PP built up and perhaps be able to get some twink gear for the Rogue...mainly just a good piercer. ;) Prolly tank the Monk to 30-40 to get a good stabber for the Rogue then put the Monk on hold, unless I really enjoy the playstyle at that level. Anyway, if anyone is interested in hanging out with a lowbie Monk named Ssseven, feel free to send tell if I'm on. :)

monk's a pretty poor moneymaker. can't carry anything until you get some WR bags which cost money themselves. rogue's a better choice. you can pickpocket all the gems and other droppables from mobs your group is killing (at least until you get kicked out).
and anyway, i'd recommend playing the toon you want to play. as soon as you get lvl 46 a huge portion of droppables become obsolete because you have access to no drop planes gear. for instance, you are pretty much guaranteed a free 20% haste belt with stats the first time you go to sky as a rogue. this makes spending 15k on a FBSS meaningless.

Well, my intention was to play the Rogue mainly...but as I was saying I cant take the grind to get to a respectable weapon...I did it over a decade ago, and having to go through that torture again is dreadful. I got a SBD at Level 32 I think on my original Rogue....that was nice, but even after obtaining it the backstabs weren't phenominal or anything...but much better than that Burning Rapier.
Edit: I had a Bone Razor at the very end of my original Rogue career...that thing was ultra nice compared to everything before it...but thats so far out from being a newb it's not funny. ;P

like i said earlier in this thread, go to EC and do your best to look pathetic. run around naked killing snakes and train shit constantly to the EC tunnel entrance while /yelling and begging for help. auction and say things like "paying everything i have for a good rogue mainhand piercer... pst." someone will take mercy on you and give you some shit, i can almost guarantee it.

I have been in EC for the last 2 days, looking pathetic and dieing repeatedly without trying. :) If all goes well I will be level 4 tonight.
So far I am having a blast. XP is painfully slow but there is a tinge of that feeling I had the first time I ever played EQ back in 99, so I am enjoying myself. Finally managed to move up from a rusty sword to a dwarven axe I found at a vendor cheap.
Looking forward to fun and good times.

Well, I played the Monk allll night, got a twink weapon...was doing really well when I was grouped...as soon as I tried to solo, I died about 7 times in the course of 2 hours...which made the entire 2 hours a complete waste...Level 7 now...Im going to admit, I wanted to cry at some points being as I'd get a bub into 7 and die, and repeat that process about 6 times...even cons were always super close fight...blues were generally easy fights, but a scalebone or outrider would always appear halfway through the fight usually resulting in my dying right at the guard's feet...I forgot just how sadistic this game can be...I'm going to try not to lose my resolve. =\

Hey Jed,
Its frustrating but pick your fights well and pull with a throwing weapon. Dont stop until you're near a zone fighting a solo. Run or feign if your at half health and not winning by a large shot. Strafe running will keep the mob from hitting you.
People die by fighting mobs at low hps,not running, adds, getting a caster instead of a melee mob, etc. Pick your battles well and make each one count.

I can never find people to bind my soul. Creates long corpse runs I don't enjoy. GFay seems to be devoid of groups during the daytime hours.

No...getting level 60 in 2 months might work for some people but that's a ton of grinding, and what's the point in rushing there? Not like we have a level cap increase coming...ever.
I would think it would take a good 6-8 months to do 1-60 at a reasonable pace. To each their own, though.

Where are you currently bound? Someone can help you I'm sure. I'd suggest going to Freeport and trying for a bind there. I don't know why anyone would do their early levels away from the buff and free cheap gear fest that is EC.
