I'm finding it hard getting back into EQ, as it's been like 7 years since I played. I'm doing the whole root nuke thing until 29 when I can quad (I assume, only level 4 at the moment). I've completely forgotten how you get gear. Are there quests for stuff as you level, or can random mobs drop stuff? Do I need to mainly buy stuff from other players? Feeling like a complete newb here!

Research item names in this forum for the items you might use.

Plenty of info.

I started arround one and half week ago as wizard ( level 19 atm. )
From level 1 to 5 i was in the starter zone ( Neriak/Nektulos ).
Most of the basic cloth armor gear droped here for me.
I saved bone chips, spider silk, HQ pelts, skins and sold it later in ec tunnel.
At level 5 arround i moved to EC and start hunting there and also looked for group or a hunting partner.
At the entrance there are always nice people that willing to buff you.
As wizard dont forget to grab always a sow if possible if you are soloing.
I would avoid to send people direct tells asking for buffs.
Just ooc for buffs at the entrance of ec tunnel.
At level 8-9 i moved to WC and was grouping there for short.
During this time i switched between ec-wc.
Arround level 13-14 i moved directly to oasis and was hunting there.
I was in oasis till level 18 when i got my first guk group and moved there.

I can't tell more atm since i went yesterday my first time into guk. :)

ps: Excuse my bad english hope you still get a clue what iam talking about :)

Grouping as a wiz is a bit harder than some other DPS classes but definitely possible.

If you want to make pretty good money you can do the Greater Lightstone turn ins in NK. I did Erudin's crossing for quite some time collecting Greater lightstones.

By far the best way to get gear is to buy it in EC from other players. To do so you'll need to farm up the plat for it - once you have a nest egg of a couple hundred platinum you can do a little shopping spree for cheap stuff. You probably won't be able to do so until level 15 or 20, as early on most of your money is spent on spells, but later on you tend to make more money from loot than you lose from buying spells. You can also farm to get money faster, but as a wizard you are not terribly gear-dependent until you are quadding, which starts when you get your Bonds of Force spell in your 20s or 30s. Really, the best thing to do is to choose what monsters you kill wisely: go for humanoids or undead since they tend to drop weapons, armor, and later research components that you can sell to vendors.

I don't know what starter zone you're in, but I'd head for CB or BB right away. I was in CB last night helping out others, and the zone was a flurry of activity. It seems like there has been a MAJOR influx of really new players in the past few weeks (not just alts). Proof for me was there were NO group in CB last night, everyone was trying to solo miserably, and the result was massive trains to Zone every 5 minutes. Reminded me of starting back in '99 when we didn't know what was going on. But on the flip side it sure was fun and I saw that last night again!

I started in Tox (worst starter zone in the game) and as soon as I hit lvl 3 I headed right to Qeynos, got a bind, started grouping in Blackburrow and never looked back. I'd suggest getting into a group and let the exp roll in. I grouped mainly from 3 to 47. It can be done, you just need to be extra proactive (put that LFG tag on immediately) about knowing where to go and group dynamics. Also, wizards get the bad rap because they go AFK, so don't go AFK or you'll get that bad reputation.

Once you hit 12 or so, head towards Oasis. The best group is at Orc HW at the invis wall. You can stay there until 20. After that head to Mistmoore or Unrest. You can do that until 30 or so. Then U/Lguk, there are options in LOIO or OT until mid to late 30's. I did SolB from 40-47.

If you want to try quadding, make sure you sift through all the posts, or just have someone show you. I either grouped in OT or quadded succulents in my late 30's. Some quad much earlier, but I found resists pretty unbearable.

Hit me up in game, we can talk further if you'd like.

Circle of force definitely getting way resisted. I got a 40 wiz in about 241 int worth of gear and +mana who can quad with a c2 + enlightenment. It's still good xp but I could do it in like 162int with less + mana on live.

The mobs in the OT start to run when they get low, spectres is best but they move faster than they did on live atm. Bonds of force is also a much, much shorter duration that Atol's so it's harder quadding at 34+ than 51+ imo.
