In case you haven't heard, the US senate passed a bill which included authorization for the US military to detain anyone accused of being a terrorist without filing charges or holding a trial. There is no limit to how long they can hold someone. They don't have to tell your family. They won't let you call a lawyer.

So, apparently the terrorist won. This is exactly the type of reaction they would want. If pres. Obama doesn't veto this the first people who should be held indefinitely are the men and women who voted for this bill. There is no greater threat to us than a politician that thinks such legislation belongs in the united states.

Obama said he'd veto it but it shouldn't really even come to that.

This has been happening since forever, really. People get abducted by large groups with power (like governments) all the time.

The truly sad part is how everyone knows, and no one really cares -- though it's a helpless response I suppose. What can be done?

What can be done?
Vote Ron Paul and hope he doesn't get assassinated like Kennedy.
If he does, it will probably lead to violent revolution.

War on terror by being scared, I agree it's bullshit.

The bill would require that the military take custody of a suspect deemed to be a member of al-Qaida or its affiliates who is involved in plotting or committing attacks on the United States, with an exemption for U.S. citizens.

Some of the changed language appears to be this. I want to read the EXACT wording of anything related to this portion of the bill, though.

So basically, the bill passed is being misquoted for people to cry about and really isn't even close to what they're crying about?

no, the bill originally didn't word it in a way that was as clear as it should be

Can't the US government just claim 'oh thought he was Al Qaeda - we dun goof'd' even if they detain people that aren't terrorists anyway?

^ that's the single biggest issue that is bothering anyone that is against it. whether or not it ever happens is a different story, but that is why there are checks and balances... to make sure no one ends up with an absolute power.

Well the problem with this bill , is any time a President wants to enact Marshall law they can . They can pick up groups of people and lock them up with absolutely no rights . So if shit does hit the fan and a group of people oppose the people in power , the people in power can use the military to do away with these people quickly by claiming they are terrorists .

it's almost pointless to even try to stop it, this is the inevitable fate of governments. the heavy foot of government gets bigger and heavier over time inevitably, and when people can't take their shit anymore there's an armed uprising that promises freedom from oppression. the uprising succeeds, establishes a new government and the cycle goes on.

What looks better-

The man who attacks, or

The man who gets attacked, then defends himself?

America would be a much greater example to the World if the government would take a more defensive stance on things.

if it was that simple, you'd think people could avoid repeating it.

Unless in such case where the previously indicated repetition is intentional.
